Another vote here for the 22nd Tenkaichi Budokai to Freeza being the 'Golden Age' for me. Though the Cell Games is still my favourite individual set of chapters.

22nd to 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. Goku vs Tenshinhan in the 22nd was an AMAZING fight. I liked the Piccolo arc to because it felt like the first really "serious" arc, the shit definitely hit the fan when Kuririn died.
Hey! Check out my YouTube Channel! I talk about Dragon Ball quite a lot. www.youtube.com/nessmudkipz

Yep, I've got the same feelings. With the death of Kuririn, Toriyama started more serious staff in the series.

My personal favorite part of Dragon Ball is the beginning up through the second time the Dragon Balls are collected. I think that's like the first 10 volumes? That is the part that I like to reread the most. I think that if it had ended at that point, it would have been a totally solid comedy/action series. I like young Goku the best, and really love the feel of that early part.

BUT! Looking at how the series grew, I would agree that maybe 22nd Budokai - Freeza probably best represents Dragon Ball as a whole. You get some fun tournaments, some crazy magical stuff with Piccolo, and the cool sci-fi stories with the Saiyan and Freeza arcs. To be honest, I'm not actually a huuuuge fan of the Piccolo or Saiyan arcs. Can't quite put my finger on it, but they aren't as enjoyable to me personally. But I feel like the 22nd Budokai has a good mixture of comedy and drama with some great development with Tenshinhan. And Freeza will always be one of the greatest arcs. It manages to capture the thrill of exploring an unknown world, which is how DB began, but puts it on a galactic scale. And I will say that while the Piccolo and Saiyan arcs aren't stories that I reread very often, they were both HUGELY important to the series.
