Actually I think I know of the logic behind "Turles". Sharkman, from the Megaman series, has his name pronounced "Shiakkuman" I believe, but his name is written on the official art and in the video games obviously as "Sharkman". Obviously something like "Shiarukuman" would've sounded wonky, but I've seen a bit of romanization like this on other characters names. It sounds similiar to the case with Butter from the Ginyu Force being romanized as "Burter".

Nice podcast as usual. I too never knew the meaning behind Hildegarn's name. I wonder if Funimation will keep the name or change it when they dub it. Only time will tell I guess. Anyway, keep up the good work.

I admit, that with the "Tullece/T-urles" thing, it does sound like they're saying "T urles" in the Japanese. So like they said, probably Funi approximating.

Okay, you can get past region coding by either reburning the DVD or typing in a code using the remote. Soooo ... the only problem with it being PAL is that your American T.V. won't be able to display the video properly?

Hey, kinda like me, VegettoEX. My very first introduction to anything Dragonball was EGM magazine back in the early 90's. The only difference - you took your fandom to an entirely different level, which I think has benefited all of us Dragonball fans.

Anywho, I'll send ya a question this week.

-I had Paikuhan for dinner last night!

-"Jumeaux" meaning twin or double, but not your identical sibling. Same as in English: when someone who looks like you is called your twin, people are saying they look exactly like you. Like in English, it's just an exaggeration, like saying something along the lines of "I litterally have a million dollars on me!" when you have more than what you normally carry on you.

-"I hate that movie so let's move on."

-Sauza = thousand islands dressing? I just thought it meant "Sauce"!

-Big Ghetti Star(sp?) is a rip-off of Unicron and we all know it.

-Super 13? The Daizenshuu just continued calling him #13.

-Angurumoa was prophesized to be killed, the revelation upon resulted in Nostradamus' execution, IIRC, and Moa was there to calculate, or "prophesize", when the meteor would come destroy New Vegeta.

Exactly my point. That proves that it can't be Hitler. Besides, DB Earth is different than normal Earth.

I really enjoyed the podcast as always, and I was really excited when the topic of name puns was to be discussed because in my fan-fiction I am really trying to follow Toriyama's naming game as close as I can. It helps to know what all the names actually mean because it helps me find a "pattern" if you will (and the pattern in this case is FOOD! Sometimes I wonder if he was always hungry when he went to draw and name characters.) I digress, good informative show as per usual.

I also did some early research when I first entered fandom about what names ment, and concluded these really wrong ideas about what these names mean here for your amusment.

I knew that Gohan ment cooked rice, so at first I thought that Goku must be related to that. And, sure enough, I found the Japanese word for rice to be "Gokoku," and I thought, "Oh, that must be it. They just took out the ko in that word to make it Goku."

Then I found out that Goku's name is actually a parady of a character from Journey to the West (before I learned that San Wukong is actually Goku's name pronounced in Japanese.) That's when I discovered the word Chuugoku-jin, meaning "a man from China," and then I added Son meaning Noble or righteous and concluded that his name was based on that phrase, "noble man from China."

Of course there was always Goten which I always thought ment "clear blue sky."

But the most interesting one I found was Kuririn. When I broke it down into it's respective syllables, however, I got nothing. Then I tried to find just "Kuri" and got "monastary kitchen," which I thought made sense because I thought Kuririn was from a monastery. Then I added "rin" and I got "companion," and so I concluded his name to mean, "Monastery kitchen companion." That's all the embarasment I can handle, but let's just say I didn't know anything back then.

That's great stuff, t-bone! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if Gohan's name was derived by the similarity that his father had to rice. Since Gokoku is too similar to Goku, they might have just "cooked it".

I had a very similar thought in that regard. You see, I came in about the time the Cell saga was airing on Cartoon Network, so I saw Gohan surpass Goku. It was shortly after that I believe that I looked it up for fun and thought, "So, Gohan just cooked his dad, huh?"

But honestly, it makes no sense because Goku's adopted Grandpa was also Gohan, and I'm sure we both know that Goku cooked him if you know what I mean.

EDIT: Actually, it was the exact episode where Cell had just absorbed #18 and was transforming to his perfect form when I came in and got hooked.

Great job as always. I enjoyed that a lot, also that whole Movie 13 Villain thing (I forget how to spell his name), his pun...man, Mike you're right, that is one of the coolest things that I have ever heard. Thanks for that bit of info.

The fan-name of "Tullece" comes from a pun on lettuce. We know Taresu to be a pun on lettuce because lettuce in Japanese is "Retasu". "Taresu" is simply an inversion of "Retasu", so Julian felt it would be good to do the same with the English name-pun, except instead of "Ttulece" we should obviously use "Tullece".

Hildegarn, the monster from movie 13, has a name originating from the reaction of the producer(?) not liking the original designs. When shown the final version of the monster, Hiruta's jaw dropped in the classic "gon!" manga-effect where "gon" is the sound the jaw makes when it hits the floor. So really Hildegarn's name is a tweaking of "Hirutagon", the amalgamation of Hiruta's name and the sound effect.

That was interesting. I always wondered what sort of pun Hildegarn's name could've been, I never expected it to be a special pun with a history to it.

As for the question of who was thought up first between Gogeta and Vegetto, I remember the interview in the sixth daizenshuu kind of revealed the answer to that. I remember in it Toriyama said how he thought up the idea of the Potaras because fusion was already being used in the movies. So it seems the idea of Goku and Vegeta using the fusion technique was a concept floating around and was grabbed as an idea for movie twelve first(goes to show how some things in the manga could've been quite different if not for other things like the movies). So Toriyama then came up with the idea of the Potaras as an even better way of combining characters, but it showed up first since the manga chapters where he put that into action came out just shortly before the movie came out. So technically, Gogeta was dreamed up first, but Vegetto was the first one people saw in action.

Actually, what the interview in the 6th Daizenshuu said was that Katsura Masakazu gave Toriyama the idea of combining characters (thus, fusion), and that the idea of the Patara simply came from him realizing that he had drawn earrings for the Kaioushins and he figured he might as well have them serve some kind of purpose. I checked through the whole interview and nowhere does Toriyama talk about getting ideas for fusion from the movie.

In the translation of it I have(and the others I've seen) he does mention how it was because of the fact that fusion was used in the movies.

I: How about the conception of 'potara'?

TA: Well, that was just because fusion was being used up in the movies, and I was thinking, 'what should I do?' Since I had been drawing earrings, I wondered, 'can I use these somehow?'

I: So, you didn't draw the earrings as a way to fuse together from the beginning?

TA: Nope. They were initially just decorations.
