Worst English Dub Dialogue

"My name is Recoome, it rhymes with doom, and you'll be hurting all too soon."

That one is so marvelously bad, it became good in a way. Worked incredibly well for us!

I just recalled another.

The scene where Trunks and Krillin are in Dr. Gero's hidden lab and Trunks finds the plans to Android #17:

Trunks states he has found the blueprints on how to shut down #17 & #18 and Krillin says if he found any else. Trunks then goes on to say something like, "Nah just some plans for some toaster."

It's stupid dialouge and pun jokes like this that made this series just awful!

I found that line really funny. Especially if you take it as Trunks being completely serious and Dr Gero plans his own toasters on the same level as his androids.

Seconded. You're allowed to make a joke with an otherwise meaningless off lines if the image it conjures is actually funny. This from the guy who wrote over a paragraph on why #20 is amazing.

But it's not particularly necessary, it's just adding something that wasn't there in the first place because they think it was witty. Their job is to dub, not act as if they can do a better job.

Yeah, I can't possibly imagine Funimation intentionally leaving that line present in the uncut release. An excusable mistake on their part, assuming it actually was one.

Again, what is so bad about that line? The Ginyu Force are meant to be a bunch of over the top power ranger spoofs for comic relief who shout and do posses. I could see why it would be bad if someone like Tien or Vegeta said something like it. But Reacoom?

I know they're supposed to be over the top, its just that when I saw the line in Abridged I didn't think it was actually from the dub.

Crap, with all these cases of "bad dialogue" popping up, I'm afraid to go through with my plan of watching dub DB beginning to end. I actually ordered the old ocean dub sets and i swear i felt brain cells die as Tenshinhan said "I can see their parachutes" Just thinking about it makes me want to hit my head on my desk.

Yeah the censorship in the form of dialogue was always pretty damn terrible. Aside from this there was the whole Nappa blowing up the helicopter followed by "He blew up our cargo robot!!" and when Vegeta and Nappa arrive and blow up the city the dub had lines saying stuff like "Thankfully the city was abandoned". Despite the fact we saw people there. And when they crash into the buildings as their pods arrive we were treated to Vegeta's diappointment that it was a Sunday and the buildings were empty so they didn't kill anyone..

Gohan: 16, you love life. You gave everything up to save it. And you were just an android. I let you die. I can't do that! I won't watch anymore! I feel it slipping! AND I WON'T WATCH THIS ANYMORE!

This was one of the few parts of DBZ I'd seen in Japanese before the English and I was gutted at how they ruined the scene with stuff like that. Most of Funi's problem came from inserting dialogue into places where there was none originally.

I'm watching the dub of Kai at the moment as well and while it's far, far better than anything before it I was very disappointed to hear Dende talk about how he had 107 brothers and *sisters* and then literally the next minute talk about how the Namekians are all male....

The original Funimation/Early Ocean dub was pretty terrible when it came to things such as Death and any form of mutliation.

It's wasn't even until the Buu Saga with the Westwood Dub/Later Ocean Dub that they actually started using words like "Kill", "Die" and "Death" which in all honesty is quite brain racking at how long they put off such topics in their dub while Funimation's dub was already using such topics since the beginning of the Ginyu Saga.

As distant as the Funi dub has become to me, I still can not help but love this.

At 12 years old, this was the greatest thing ever to me... I taped it off TV and watched it all the time.... as awkward as much of the dub is, I still think this was really well done. Not the whole episode, but this scene.... I tried to watch it then without getting shivers... I'm a little ashamed to admit I failed.

The entire Bardock TV special dub.

Tell me about it. I hated how they tried to make Bardock out like he was "repenting for his sins."

FUNimation's original English dub always tried to make out the Saiyans to really be like good guys inside. They had Vegeta saying that Freeza took his father away from him and made him do bad things, and that Gokuu was an entirely selfless superhero who believed in the good of people, which is apparently why he let Vegeta go, not because, as a Saiyan, he wanted to fight him again while acknowledging that it was a poor decision.
