From FUNi dub to the orignal

Like most kids in america I got hooked on DBZ during the Toonami run.
It was a crazy show that obviously got young kids attention from all the fighting and the pure awesomeness of the show.
When the bricks came out I snagged them all, from Z to GT to Dragonball.
I was also into other animes ranging from the shonen to seinen.

But the FUNi dub and Faulconer Production's/Mark Menza track's was the way for me.
Then I started reading the graphic novels and really started getting that mystical feeling of Dragonball.
Then Z Kai came out on blu ray, and instantly you can see the dramactic change of performance from the bricks to Kai.

If you know me from FUNimation's old forum or Youtube I stuck with my view on DBZ as hardcore 80's headbanger's fighting aliens.
Well, with the entire run of DB on dvd I watched them with the dub and obviously the orignal japanese score.
But when I was done I felt that I should watch the Z series with the original score.
I have been, but then I got curious.

I've watch Deathnote, One Piece and some DBZ material in its orignal form with subs via internet.
It's clear the amount of passion and performance the seiyuu's give their character's.
Their battle cry's and emotions seem so dramatic, but I do prefer the dubs.
But with the orignal dub of DBZ you don't really get that satisfaction as you do with today's dubs.
So I turn my audio for the bricks to the original version. My god, it is just so nuts that it took me years to discover this, this is Dragonball.

While the score is better when orginal track is chosen, the voices and added/cheesy dialouge, really take you out of the expierence.
So just thought I would share this with the board, haha Z Kai hands down for me is the dub straight up.
But that's it, I mean GT and DB aren't as bad as Z but still. Going to go through the entire series with subs after I finish GT.
Really neat though to really discover the true power of Dragonball and Akira Toriyama's story telling.
But really, without Z Kai I don't think I would've gave it the chance.

Hey man, thanks for the post. I absolutely agree. It's unfortunate that most shows got a solid dub, even One Piece. But to have for me the "grand daddy of them all" have such a mediocre dub is nearly unforgivable. Even Dragon Ball's dub isn't that great for me. I hate how they got rid of all of the insert songs.

- I actually felt like a kid when I saw this for the first time a few weeks ago.

I also can't stand Kid Goku's English voice. Nozawa is just too good in her role to pass up.

But yeah, I have grown to adore the Japanese original after trying for years to stick to the dub. Though yes, the Kai dub is magnificent and I always choose it over the (still very enjoyable) Japanese original.

I hate how they got rid of all of the insert songs.

They didn't get rid of all of them. They did get rid of a lot of 'em, though, and the few that they did keep were usually blasted out by a previously non-existent narration from the narrator.
