Anyone not buying Kai?
Anyone not buying Kai?
Just kind of curious. Are there any people out there who are not buying Kai on DVD/Blu-ray for reasons OTHER THAN watching it online or downloading it.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I bought the first Japanese Blu-ray, the first four FUNimation Blu-ray sets, and the final Japanese DVD. Half of those were for review purposes. The other half (FUNi BD Parts 2-4) were for no particular reason other than I was able to get them super cheap off Amazon.
I didn't watch the show post-Saiyan arc. I have no interest. At all.
So I guess the answer is "yes, partially" and the reason is "I don't care"
. Piracy of any sort had no part in my reasoning.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
While I did stream most of the episodes live as they originally aired, that had absolutely no input on my non-purchases of the series. It was a show I mostly watched for curiosity's sake. It was a show I mostly watched weekly because it came on shortly after Pokemon Sunday, so I would already be sitting right there ready to watch. It was a show I wouldn't have watched if I had to pay money specifically to watch that show, a show I never particularly cared if I missed an episode of, and a show I have no intent to ever watch again. I already own the show in what I consider a far more preferable version, the original "Dragon Ball Z", and that's what I'll watch if I want to watch this material.
So... did I not purchase the show because I "watched it online"? Sure. Would I have purchased it if what I saw online was interesting, something I could see myself rewatching, and not just something I was mostly looking at out of habit? Sure. Would I have purchased it if I lived in a place where it's licensed AND could be watched for free in some way or other (which is... well, everywhere). Nope.
Would I have purchased it if there was no way to watch it without purchasing it? ...probably. But not more than one volume, for the sake of curiosity. And it's not like anyone involved in the licensing of this actually wanted it to be a "straight to home format, buy before you try" series either.
So that's a "partially yes" from me too, I guess. I wouldn't have pirated the latter 90% of it if it involved more conscious effort than changing the channel after watching a show I actually cared about, and I wouldn't have bought that stuff had I not pirated it either.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I only thought about it being nice to have Kai on DVD or Blu-ray recently, so I probably missed my chance of getting it cheap (not that I want it all that bad anyway). Seeing how it's the superior english dub by far, it's worth it to have besides my Dragon Boxes if at some point in time I wanted or had to watch it in english for whatever reason. Watching certain filler scenes in english these days is quite unpleasant, so Kai is perfect for watching it in english.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I did in the beginning, but lost terest and then finally decided to buy the Blu-rays, watching Kai is the definitive way to see the series (in HD 1080p BD).
I'm not annoyed with the replacement, it's DBZ's music.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I've always intended to buy Kai, because I try to collect all the major Dragon Ball media (for reference/informational purposes, if nothing else). But it's been low priority for me, because I don't particularly like Kai. So my spare cash has been going towards other things instead, like the US Dragon Boxes, semi-old video games, other TV shows, etc.
The music problems with FUNimation's release make me hesitant to buy it, too. It's impossible to own the entire show with Yamamoto's score, so I'd rather have Kikuchi's score for everything. But I don't know what the hell FUNimation is doing with the music in the re-re-re-re-releases of the early episodes. When that settles down and starts making sense, I might get around to buying it.

I'm waiting for it to come out in Spain to buy it. I'd rather have stuff from my region (Europe) than from America.

I wouldn't have if it wasn't for the amazing new English dub.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I'm glad I'm not the only one who has no interest in owning it. I admit some of the battles are awesome with no filler (mainly Frieza), but there are quite a few filler episodes that I love like where the Ginyu Force shows up on King Kai's planet and the Other World Tournament. But for me the big breaker was no Majin Buu saga. It seems pointless to even have Kai when it doesn't have every saga.

Australian is a PAL format, but the AUS Blu-rays, DVDs, games, etc are always so damn pricey, eesh!Goten Forever wrote:Costs too much and lack of PAL.
The US Blu-rays of DBZK are Region A & B, meaning it's PAL-compatible (Europe).

But I don't think blu-ray is compatible with normal DVD players. Or for example my damn xbox.

Blu-rays aren't compatible with DVDs, people.
Nowadays I only use (rarely) my PS3 Slim 250 GB for Blu-rays, and everything else is on Xbox 360 S 250 GB.
Part of only using it rarely is Sony's fault, they don't add at all any useful features or update the internet browser. The internet browser of PS3 is like IE6.
Xbox 360 does have its own internet browser and search engine too.
Bing! on PC and 360.

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I only bought parts 1-4 because I lost interest once Yamamoto score was taken off. I don't plan on buying the rest.
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I've obtained the first six parts though methods which are frowned upon in this community. I will start legally obtaining Kai once the new Season sets come out in May, both for the sake of completionism and for the sake of showing my support to Funimation for getting it (mostly) right with their dub this time around.
Edit: Just re-read my post and realized that I didn't really answer OP's question. My reason for not buying Kai (yet) is because of the lack of a consistent release, both in terms of episode count per set (13 vs. 26?) and the score (Yamamoto vs. Kikuchi).

Re: Anyone not buying Kai?
I bought volumes 3 and 4, because that area of the show needed Kai, and the English dub especially.
I might buy another volume, maybe the one that covers the Cell Games.
I use Kai to supplement or give an alternative route to my Dragon Boxes.
