Has FUNimation ever featured dubtitles for the series/films?

When you're watching a film, series or playing a game in English you can enable the subtitles which tend to be pretty much the same script as they're talking, but for Dragon Ball / Z / GT + rest, has FUNi ever done something like this?

Yes, I know they did this for the old movie single DVDs, and I know they also did this for the series singles, but I don't know if they did this for the entire series or stopped doing them later.

I'd think if for anyone, it would benefit them most. They won't have to deal with the incorrect dub lines!

Dubtitles were common up until the bricks, but if I recall they were typically designated as the secondary subtitle track - with good reason.

The Ultimate Uncut Edition? That's sweet!

I have one Ultimate Uncut Special Edition single: "Doomed Heroes". It does not appear to have dubtitles. There is only one subtitle track and it corresponds to the Japanese version. However, I also have the "Dead Zone" UUSE single, and it does. That DVD also doesn't have the Mexican Spanish track that's on the UUSE TV singles, so, it's odd.

The World's Strongest and Tree of Might UUE singles from the First Strike set didn't appear to have dubtitles either. But what I found interesting was the captions for the Ocean dub singles for movies 1-3, these were the only to be hearing impared (Said stuff like [Karate Yells]) as I'm aware of.

Well, there was one use for dubtitles (if you were into this sort of thing): dubbing practice. If you were into fandubs, amateur voice acting or, heck, even aspirations to be a professional voice actor, it was fun to turn on the dubtitles, mute the audio, and try to match the lip flaps. That was fun, at least. Still, that's a relatively narrow interest, and probably not worth the extra disc space.

There were dubtitles for every DBZ single up to and including Vol 4 of the UUE line. Then for Vol 5 and onwards, viewers at home only got the words for the dub that mattered.

For you, perhaps, and probably for most of the posters on Daizex. It might be worth repeating, though, that the vast majority of FUNimation's customers are dub-watchers, and their hottest-selling product continues to be DBZ, with a marketing emphasis on the dub (despite the desperate improvements that it needed and would not get until Kai's dub).

I would think if someone was hearing-impaired, they'd want to read something more accurate to the story. CC tracks usually do identify sound effects or who's speaking though... so, you'd miss out on that sort of thing if you went with the Japanese track. But if Funi's DVDs never did that anyways, then... wtf?

It's a bit of a conundrum I do sometimes think about. Are there any deaf Dragonball fans that actually watch the show (as opposed to even reading the manga)?

This post kind of made me scratch my head. There's subtitles on there, it'd be hugely confusing for 2 sets of subtitles (and entirely needless, as they're both in English). Put the good ones on there, good to go, what's the problem?

It's what used to be called the "closed captioning" track. It's the written text of what's being spoken, provided as a courtesy for the deaf.

A second subtitle track with this option was "necessary" because FUNimation's script was so vastly different from the actual/original script in the Japanese version -- the translated script / subtitle track doesn't apply to their "reversioning".

What this accomplishes (by removing it) though is that now no-one has to be subject to it ever again . Now you deaf peeps ain't got a choice! You're rocking' it up with hick-Goku with the rest of us!

Seriously, though, yes, I watch the show as well as reading the manga. I can tell you that I actually prefer the Japanese version as opposed to the English dub. When I owned the singles, I tend to turn on the dubtitle to compare to the subtitle. Man, the dub is just terrible. The dub lines are just too cheesy to even take it seriously. When the orange bricks and Dragon Boxes were released, I was kinda glad they didn't include dubtitle, so the deaf peeps can watch the show with accurate script and what is being actually said in the show (or movies). Most deaf people I know are just casual viewers, unlike me, so they just don't care about the accuracy of the diagolue. They prefer visuals (actions, power-ups, animation, etcs.)

I was a little disappointed that they didn't include the dubtitle for Z Kai, since the dub was pretty accurate, and the voice acting is superb. That was what Z Kai was about: the accurate dub for "refreshed" version of Z. If Funimation heavily advertizes solely on accurate dub, then why not include dubtitle? It's little things like this that irritate me to no end.

All in all, the dubtitle has a positive side, but not when the dub is garbage.

Sort of offtopic, but regards FUNimation and their sub/dubtitles, on the Crayon Shin-chan sets, they don't have any sub/dubtitles at all, making the hard hearing/deaf viewers go look elsewhere.

Well, the American Shin-chan was completely Americanized so it's also one of the reasons I refuse to watch with the English dub (don't really like Shinnosuke's voice or the script because it's full of US references and I don't live in US).
