The "next gen" Dragonball games

Post by verto » Wed Mar 21, 2012 6:17 pm

I only recently picked up a PS3 and haven't played any of the Dragonball games since Budokai Tenkaichi 3/Sparking Meteor. Are any of the newer games worth my money?

I've heard great things about Burst Limit, but I was always more of a Tenkaichi fan; besides, I doubt Burst Limit has much of an online community nowadays anyway.

DBZ games suck online so think about them for offline modes only.

You should definitely pick Burst Limit, awesome game, impressive graphics/cutscenes, gameplay is similar to the Budoukai series and the soundtrack's composed by Kenji Yamamoto.

It's not a Budoukai 1 remake, but I do get how people think of it as such.

Yay BL didn't have its music replaced like RB2 did, but to be honest, I really like BT2's soundtrack in Raging Blast 2 (though I've not picked RB2 for a lot of months now neither any of the other DBZ games).

I recommend Raging Blast 2 since you're into Tenkaichi, but I suggest that you download the demo on PSN first.

Hasn't the demo RB2 been completely eliminated from PlayStation Store?

The only way I've been able to re-download is because it's on my history's downloads list.

Edit: to modify *completed* to *completely* :P

I believe so, I wasn't specifically looking for them, but I probably would have noticed a demo for a Dragonball game last time I checked the demos.

I think, eventhough you're more into Tenkaichi, you'll appreciate BL more despite the fact it lacks a lot of content. After I played it I felt as though the developers really did try to recreate a DBZ experience but were short of time, leaving the game feeling quite incomplete. I was left dissapointed that there wouldn't be a sequel.

If you're really into Tenkaichi however, then there's a good chance you'll like RB or RB2. I'd get any of the games on next-gen for as cheap as possible though.

So being short of time is the reason of not having Boo's arc? Shame.

Well at least they featured:

- DBZ's Saiyan to Cell arcs.
- Broli's Special
- Burdock's Special
- Trunks' Special

I this is all.

And while there's a small bunch of characters to play with (not a prob for me), change Goku's custom uniform to the alternative and he'll look as if he'd be Super Vegetto. :D

You turn Super Saiyan during the battle not choosing, and if the power decreases you turn back to normal. Same for Cell, Freeza, and the Saiyans.

Are you sure? I've played & finished the game about a year ago, but I don't remember the Trunks Special. As for Bardock & Broli, I only remember what-ifs with them, not their actual stories.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Oh, the Trunks' special I was thinking of was him versus Cell.

The current gen games haven't been up to par at all. My personal favorite is Burst Limit but it is very lacking in content(especially if you are coming off of BT3). Raging Blast is a complete mess in my opinion and the newest game Ultimate Tenkaichi isn't worth $60. For you, if you really want it, your best bet would be to try Raging Blast 2. The controls are a bit funny(following the Raging Blast formula) so there might be some getting use to; also there is no story mode. Instead, Spike has offered a re-animated version of "Plan to Eradicate the Saiyans."

Like mysticboy suggests, check out the Raging Blast 2 demo to see if you like it. I'd say do the same for Burst Limit but with Atari no longer owning the rights, the demo is no longer around. However, you have the money to spend I believe Burst Limit is only around $15-20. Like I said it lacks content(going only from the Saiyan to the Cell arc in characters and story) but it's my personal favorite out of this generation of games.

Last thing. News for a new game should be popping up shortly. No word on who is making it but it might be in your best interest to see what it could be before dropping money on any game already out. My advice is check out the RB2 demo first before buying and look into the cost of Burst Limit to get your Dragonball fix. If you like RB2, by all means have at it; but in the sea of grade-A Playstation games like Uncharted, inFamous, Twisted Metal and awesome third party titles like Skyrim and so on, it's really hard to justify any of these Dragonball games at the prices they are going for.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

Galaxy Mode is kind of a Story Mode, it has missions for every single character to complete. Much more challenging than the typical DBZ story mode (it's always way too short and skips a lot of battles/missions) on DBZ games, imo.

The demos BL+RB1+RB2 used to be available on PS3's Store but they've been removed for several months now.

However, if he owned an Xbox 360 he could just download the demos via PC to his 360.

On PS3 I think he could leech all three DBZ demos too, through the PSN Downloader but his PS3 would need to have CFW.

I don't think it's right to call it "next gen" since this generation of consoles is almost over but sticking to the topic I'de say go for Burst limit. It's got many flaws but the visuals are the best out of the current HD DBZ games and the fighting is the most fun in my opinion. I can't speak for Ultimate Tenkaichi but Raging Blast 2 is somewhat decent however compared to Tenkaichi 3 it pales in comparison. The current gen Spike games have done more harm than good for the franchise in my opinion. They just stopped improving the formula and in many ways made things worse.

I found the demo for RB2 on PSN. Just search for it. And no, Galaxy mode is not a storymode but a mission mode; you know something that BT3 had with the storymode.

On the UK PSN it's no longer available and I've searched for it thoroughly.

BT3 had a story mode but it still sucked. There's one thing I liked about BT3, DB+Z+GT+Slump characters.

Edit: ^ That's my opinion, ta dah, not a fact, but it is true the story mode's quite short.

Don't be fooled by the RB2 demo though. When I played it before the games release, I thought it was great. But then I played the actual game, and I expected much more. Yeah, I liked the RB2 demo more than the actual game

It's ok, I felt the same way. But it could still help the TC.

Thanks for all the responses. As it stands, I'm still not sure if I'll be getting any of the games, but I'll probably wait until I see the new games for this year. I'm hoping for a Zenkai Battle Royale port.

I put the quotes in since I dislike the term as well, didn't really come across but it was meant to be somewhat mocking.

This happens in all games - show off the best bits in the demo and the rest of the game pales in comparison.
Such as many multiplayer demos (L4D2) and single player demos (Cod5/Cod6/Cod7)
SON GOTEN FTW
except GT Goten
Especially after he went out with Paresu-chan
