DragonBall Z - The Move: La Vendetta Divina DVD Dissection.

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Thu Apr 12, 2012 1:23 am

My first post on the Kanzentai forum and it's a dissection. How fitting.

So, I recently got the Italian dub of DBZ movie 1. The Italian dub title is "La Vendetta Divina" which translates to "The Divine Vendetta", which I gotta say, I like more than "The Dead Zone" or "Return My Gohan!!". The cover art is taken right from the movie poster itself. We've seen this on the Ocean\FUNimation release but this one is much less altered.

Image

Since this movie didn't have a title card, they added the title "The Divine Vendetta" into the opening along with "The Movie" under the "DragonBall Z" logo...

Image

Image

The opening is in fact "Cha-La Head Cha-La" and not "What is my Destiny: DragonBall". It was a bit disappointing but, I really can't blame them for putting the original un-dubbed opening in there. I mean, that's what most anime fans want, right?

But before going into the movie itself, lets look at the menus...

The main menu is just some scenes from the movie playing in different panels to the tune of a very shortened "Cha-La Head Cha-La". It's so shortened that there aren't any lyrics, it's just the beginning of the song, and the very ending cut and pasted together.

Image

The available options we have are: Play, Selezione Capitoli (scene selection), Lingue e Sottontoli (language selection), Extras, and Credits.

The Scene Selection menu is a little weird. All 4 chapters are playing at the same time in this menu so there is this bustle of just... sounds. I didn't know what the hell was going on at first but then I would look at one window and notice some of the sounds fit that one, and I'd see another window and notice the other sounds fit that one and... yea.

Image

The language menu kinda surprised me. I kinda wasn't expecting to see two sound options for Italian. There's Italian 2.0 and Italian 5.0 along with Japanese. And although the Japanese score plays on the Italian language track, the song "The World’s Greatest Gohan" is instrumental only.

Image

The Extras aren't really that great. It's just some character profiles and some scenery shots from the movie. For example, one of the landscapes you can choose is Garlic Jr.'s palace. They would take some of those shots of the castle from the movie and splice them together and that's the extra. I have no idea what the point is but... it's a thing.

Image

The other extra is the character profiles. There's really nothing here you probably don't already know about the characters. Maybe except that in Italy they call Piccolo "Junior", as in "Ma Junior" throughout the whole series and not just during the 23rd Tenkaichi Budoukai. The reason for this is that "Piccolo" translates to "tiny" in Italian so, unless they changed his name, they'd be calling him "Tiny".

As for the actual video.... well, you've seen those title screen shots up there. They're shit. It kinda looks like they just took the VHS and transferred it over to DVD. This would never fly here in the US. Why is it OK for companys to do this in Italy, Spain and other countries? I mean, look at this crap...

On the up side, there is a tad more on the bottom of the screen. Why is this note worthy? Well for years I thought Piccolo was clenching his fist as he talked about Goku at the end of the movie. Now I see I was wrong. He was holding his arm!

Image

And there you go, the Italian DBZ movie 1 DVD. That's really all I think I can say about this DVD. If you wanna check out a clip of the dub, I uploaded a clip on Flickr.

Wow! I love that final screencap. I too always thought he was clenching his fist. People who loathe the movies in 16:9 will have a field day with this.

Does anyone have a DBOX shot of that scene to compare this to?

Yes, in fact here are three screen shots...

Here is the DragonBox version:

This is Dead Zone from FUNimation's Ultimat Uncut line:

And this is a shot from the original 1997 Pioneer\FUNimation release of Dead Zone:

You can see in that last shot (or not see) that even though it was 4:3 we didn't get that little bit more on the bottom. Now that I really look at it, you can just see Piccolo's arm in that shot but still, not as much as the Italian version.

Yeah, I can see why we missed it, even on the Double Feature. It's just not as noticeable without the extra pink at the bottom.

I've got this DVD too. Not only the footage, but also the Italian dub audio sucks because it's a "false 5.1ch" mix. Every five channel has exactly the same sound, so it's just the same as mono. For your information, there's another Intalian dub of DBZ movies released by Dynamic.

Another Italian dub or just this dub released by Dynamic?

Another Italian dub. The script and the voices are all different.

Interesting. The movie dub I know has different voice actors than the dub for TS show. Do you know whether this other dub has the actors used in the TV series (for example: Paolo Torrisi as Goku)?

I always used to think it was a fist too, but the last time I watched the film, it was via the "Ultimate Uncut" single, and I was looking closely and noticed that what I thought were bent fingers were actually knuckles, and I first thought it was a weird error and he had two pairs of knuckles or something until a few seconds later I put it together realized he was holding his arm.

I find it relatively amusing that other people thought it was a fist as well though.

The most important question of all is: who's sending me a copy of this DVD?

Actually...

I couldn't get this knowing you didn't have this in your movie 1 collection, so I got two...

This is why I asked you on Twitter a while ago what versions those were in the picture you posted of your movie 1 collection. Joke or not, I figure what the Hell.
