New Wiki!?

Post by Nex Carnifex » Fri Apr 13, 2012 11:27 pm

This is gonna be so awesome! Mostly because the current db wiki is terrible and run by moronic, bias, stubborn administrators. Maybe Dragon Ball will finally have a quality database, and not a copy paste of the current one (which needs to die)

When is it going to launch? Or it's gonna be a surprise?
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

I've been preparing some articles for it, but still need to know what the format is. Anyone else doing it?

They should create some rules on bias and stuff to keep it from becoming the one that already exists, they should also try and separate information based on canon/non-canon/manga/anime since that seems to be an important issue within the mythology and it would really help since everything together becomes massively inconsistent and messy.

Well, we can easily mark when things come from the manga or anime, like a lot of Herms' guides do, but there's no official canon/non-canon list to stick to, and it would probably be a bad idea to arbitrarily make one up. Besides, Daizenshuu EX, Kanzentai, and Herms' guides all managed well enough.

I think we should only point out when something differs from one source to the other. Like when the manga version is different from the anime version, or the different future timelines. I did make an unpublished article about the differences between them, like how the Z-Warriors die in different ways between the TV Special and the actual series.

I prefer referencing the manga because it makes more sense without all the inconsistencies and inconsistent feats introduced with filler, GT, weird animation anomalies (Frieza's timer), etc. The Dragon Ball universe is best realized from the source material, everything else is elaborate fan fiction for money

I not just dislike the infamous Wikia look, but also their lack of organization. So it would be good to have some estabilished standards before the opening. I think I have wasted enough of my time in wikis to provide some suggestions.

● Images

Personally I am not pleased with the use of pictures from the anime. First there is an issue with quality. I noticed that in this forum there are some people willing to provide high-quality screenshots on requests. But still, it's not enough. And I also feels it looks ugly to use images from the anime in the top of the article.

The solution is simply make the use of images from the manga priority. Check out the One Piece Wiki article about Monkey D. Luffy.

● Separate sections for information outside of the manga.

This helps to make the information a lot more objective. Looking at other wikis, an article might end up filled with information about the anime and videogames, which may not be the most desired result. Of course this doesn't mean it cannot include some brief information lines like "the 5th film also introduced a brother for Freeza named Coola".

Layout-wise, the best way to achieve this is to include a navegation bar on top of each article. I also believes that for this wiki a separate "translation" section would provide the best material.

I guess I should point out that there's already an established (second!) thread about the proposed wiki, and you're welcome to continue the conversation over there -- much of what I see being tossed in this thread has already been covered a few times, and of course you'll be getting full style guide and recommendations (pulled from the community's own recommendations, as well!) when we're ready to launch and go in that direction.
