Sorry about the double post but I'd like to know why certain lines are changed when they contain words said before. Like sometime the word "beat" is said in the NT version but sometimes it's taken out. "Life" and "Survive" are taken out too. "Idiot" and "stupid" are sometimes used but sometimes taken out. I don't get how they can be so damn inconsistent. Yeah, it's minor but it still bugs me.

This is all speculation on my part but inferring from the amount I know about show production there could be different people spot checking these episodes for things that won't fly on Nicktoons. Maybe Fred doesn't want to ring the higher-ups too often to ask if such n' such is okay so he's just extra cautious while Bob is more willing to get on the horn and be a little more ballsy. If there's no communication between the two you can see why it flip flops like this. Granted, I don't exactly know if this sort of operation works in teams or not but at the end of the day I still assume it boils down to Fred or Bob making the final call. This is nothing new, seasons 1-3 of the old dub was constantly doing things like this.

It's strange how they don't say that someone is death explicitly but never try to state or show otherwise.

This is so funny because cartoons like Ben 10, Jonny Bravo and Power Puff Girls say the word "die" and refer to death. I don't understand why a show that's meant for slightly older viewers than that can't.

Here's the thing, all of those were made at different times with different standards. Not to mention things like Johnny Bravo and PPG could get away with them much more easily since they were mostly comedic.

As for audience, no, it's the same audience.

The last two are comedic (though PPG are action-based as well) so you don't take them (too) seriously but Ben 10 is very action based and has stuff like possible death (though no onscreen death).

It's weird how DBZ Kai gets death mentions altered for NT yet that version does nothing to conceal the fact that people are getting really hurt and even killed. Though that's nice, why bother removing mentions to death if you're going to keep it. Most 10 year olds and older know about death and need I mention Disney movies? Yeah. Do they just have a bias for Anime straight from Japan?

Like most censorship, it depends entirely on the context of how its used.

The reason why Regular Show and Adventure Time can get away with death references (though I've heard that Ward has ran into problems using the word "murder.") is because they're fantasy-laden, silly adventures with no real stakes involved.
I don't understand why a show that's meant for slightly older viewers than that can't.
Because unless the show is an animated adult comedy, it's typically considered childish.
Yeah. Do they just have a bias for Anime straight from Japan?
Not really. It's just that Anime is seen as significantly more violent than western-oriented shows. Though, I think this proves how absolutely idiotic how censorship is applied: as long as you don't show any blood, extreme violence is A-OK!!! (see: Justice League)

:D They DID mention death in the early episodes. The tone downs are probably so Toonzai doesnt have to do those terrible Voice Imitations they have to do to air the show on their block.

Or maybe Nicktoons is like Nintendo, you can show a genocide as long as you dont use the words death, die or kill. :D

Not likely since Toonzai hasn't air a single new episode in a LONG time. Way before Kai was done being dubbed into English.

Honestly, if you can show the deaths of people (minor or major characters) and NOT do anything to deny that they're not living anymore, why is it such a taboo to actually say the word "death" and other synonyms as a sort of tradeoff? Kids around ten (or any kid who saw Bambi) will KNOW that they died so it's pointless to refrain from using the words.

Hilariously Piccolo said "I should kill you for making us wait" in the Nicktoons version. Also, I have heard die and kill in the same version.

Yeah, NT in early Kai episodes was inconsistent with using the words Death and other synonyms.

Just to clear things up about the beginning of DBZK using variations of the word "die"...

At first it was OK to say die, dead and all that just as long as it wasn't a threat like, "I'm going to kill you", or saying you're
(or someone else) was going to flat out kill someone.

Here's two good examples... (please excuse the font of the early Nicktoons Edits Guide)

When did this change? I don't know but, I think it was episode 8.

IIRC, reruns of the Saiyan arc on Nicktoons now have the Kikuchi score, which means that they mixed the audio again. Do they still keep those death-related words in the current version?

I'm pretty sure they do. I know in later episodes though, during the Freeza arc some uncut lines did slip through during this transition. But, I think it just happened in maybe 3 episodes.

When these happened I slapped on a "Retroactively Uncensored" on it in the Edits Guide.

Interesting. Have they corrected Vegeta's hilarious wrong line slipped in after he's beaten by Zarbon?

As for your Nicktoons edit guide, you know, some episodes have got "editing errors" in the recaps. I remember seeing uncensored stuff also in recaps in the Westwood (UK/Canadian) dub of DBZ, which uses the edited US Toonami source. I wonder whether such "errors" are unintentional or not.

I've never noticed the uncut stuff in the recaps until I started doing this. What makes it even funnier is that it's during the recap that the TV rating is on screen adding insult to injury.

The early words of death remind me of the old Saban episodes. In the first 3/4 episodes the word death and die were used a lot. Then the episode where Krillin has to tell Chi Chi that Goku passed on is the first episode where the "next dimension" was used and forever be the replacement of that dub.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Thank god NT never brought THAT meme back.
