Fusion Voice(s) Question

Post by Gyt Kaliba » Thu May 03, 2012 3:40 pm

I got to thinking about how voices work with fusion in Dragon Ball the other night, and it made me think up a few questions again -

1) I think I remember reading that it was actually Toriyama's idea for the fused character to have both voices from their 'parts'. Is this true? If not, do we know who's brainchild it actually was?
2) Was Dragon Ball the first show to do this with fusions, or did it in turn get it from something else?

The reasoning for the second question comes to me from a re-watch of Digimon Adventure 02 I've been working on. I got to the DNA Digivolution (or Jogress Evolution) stuff in that, and it does just like fusions in Dragon Ball - the newly fused character speaks with both voices from the previous separate characters. Digimon is also a Toei show, so I wondered if they just pulled that concept from DB, or if it was already an established practice for fusions in anime.

For the life of me though, I can't think of a single other show outside of these two with fusion though.

Its seems like an obvious idea, I mean how else would they represent them being 2 people

But they're not "two people" when fused, they're a single entity, particularly in the case of the potara earring form of fusion. Thus, Vegetto shouldn't have spoken with both Goku and Vegeta's voices, but a single unique voice as each of the fused characters have unique personalities from their base components. Hasn't that been a point beaten to death when defending vocal choices in the original version compared to the dub? Otherwise, Piccolo should have spoken not only with his own voice, but Nail's and Kami's as well by the end of the series.

The Voyager episode "Tuvix" featured the characters of Tuvok and Neelix being fuzed into a single being, which was portrayed by an entirely different actor with traits from both characters but its own unique voice.

That's something entirely different, though -- Piccolo remained the base being, as explicitly stated right in the series.

Vegetto speaking with both voices was inconsistent though, wasn't it? Unless I'm remembering wrongly, the other Potara fusions only had the voice of their dominant component.

I'm not sure either of the other Potara fusions had a "dominant" member. They each did only have a single voice, however. Some people have written this off as being because the Potara were designed for Kaioshin, not mortals like Goku and Vegeta.

Only Vegito had double voices while while the Kaio-shin fusion had only a single voice
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Well it made sense to me, Piccolo's fusing was completely different he didn't take on characteristics of Kami and Nail he was still Piccolo, Vegito was equally Goku and Vegita so it makes sense his voice equally resembles both of them.

Also, the fact that Gokuu and Vegeta were practically a perfect match, therefore may've complimented each other the same way Goten and Trunks did for Metamorian fusion. Kaioushin and Kibito, on the other hand, varied largely in terms of body size, strength and, possibly, spiritual status.

Although, for Piccolo post-merged, I wonder if it'd be nice for Piccolo to include some inflections of his respective fusees, while still retaining the same voice and general performance. Like, when Piccolo reservedly says for the Great Elder to rest in peace, or when he shits himself after learning of the Kaioushin's identity.

But, in a way, that's precisely my point. There have technically been four or five different forms of fusion in DBZ (the technicalities being Cell and Buu fuzing, albeit via absorption, in order to achieve different forms) with inconsistencies presented between the portrayal of at least one of them.

Namekian fusion is different from the fusion dance which is itself different from the potara earrings. The Elder Kai didn't speak with a dual voice, nor did Kibito Kai, thus there is no reason for Vegetto to have a dual voice since not only is he unique from Goku and Vegeta, there's no evidence to support whether the earrings give a damn about dominant personalities or such. As has been stated, though, the "Ocean" version of Vegetto only spoke in a single voice, which makes the most sense for what is supposed to be a permanent fusion, actually.

Except the fact that the old Kaioushin mentioned how great a match Gokuu and Vegeta were for each other, while I doubt a god and his assistant, or a god and a witch, were the best match for each other.

Either way, while Ocean's voice for Vegetto is pretty good, it goes against the principle of following the Japanese version's way of representing Gotenks/Gogeta/Vegetto: dual voices of each of the fusion's components. Nearly all of the other dubs did this. Why change it for no apparent reason, because they think it's better and want to make an improvement where there's no demand for it?

Yeah, they are single entities, but they still have the components of the fusees inside them and retain parts of their personality. Gotenks retained the arrogance of Trunks (heck, the decision to only use SS3 until the last minute was Trunks' plan from the start), the playfulness of Goten, and making up techniques with silly names was both of them.

This double voice was what I thought was the coolest thing about the Fusions, when I saw the Buu arc first in 1999/2000. Altough it was the French dub.
Because, I would normally expect to have 'em one voice, simply dubbed by someone new or the main character, like Goku for example.
I think that to have fused character of the 2 characters dubbed by both their voice actors is pretty neat idea.
That's what makes fusion characters more interesting. I saw the one voice fusion in German dub, and it wasn't that good.
In-universe blabbering aside, I love it and don't need any questions like: ''but they are new entity etc.'' It's cool like this 8)
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.
