Dragon Ball Kai - Post Production Question...

Post by Tanooki Kuribo » Sat May 05, 2012 2:35 am

I've been thinking about this for a while. I feel kinda stupid asking but, I don't remember if it was mentioned before, and I know Toei were the ones who came up with adding the "Z" to Dragon Ball Kai. But, who actually did the post production work of adding the "Z" to all the logos in the show? I mean, at first I just assumed it was FUNimation. But, if Dragon Ball Z Kai is the international version of the show, is it possible that Toei added it to the masters they gave to international markets?

I ask because I didn't really think FUNimation was capable of fixing something like this...

For FUNimation to do this they would have to move the text over and add the "Z" while making it look natural while it scrolls. Or just make a new one with the same font and color. Is FUNimation even capable of doing this?

I guess this proves Toei Animation did the Dragon Ball Z Kai, right?

While I think Toei provided that for FUNimation, I'd say it's well within their power to fix that themselves. I believe there was an old thread back in the daizex days that showed FUNimation did a masterful job editing an ending animation for GT when Toei didn't give them the master for it. I don't remember the specifics, but the biggest clue was the clouds not moving in FUNi's version, but the fact that they got Goku's tail moving, as well as Goku's walk from various eras was superb.

I wonder why some folks still think/believe that FUNi is the one who changed Kai to Z Kai. Obviously, Toei did it. Any countries other than Japan have got Z Kai so far, and Toei Animation themselves always use the "Dragon Ball Z Kai" logo when they mention their international sales.

OK, thanks Kei17 and the OP. This confirms it.

To be frank, I liked more Dragon Ball Kai than Dragon Ball Z Kai title, but with the Japanese audio Goku on the NEPs always says Doragon Boru Kai not Doragon Boru Zetto Kai so it's not all bad.

I find that the added Z in the title to be much better.

To me, Dragon Ball Kai either sounds like an entirely new product or a Kai-style of the original Dragon Ball. The added Z shows emphasis that they are focusing only on the Z portion of the series

If Toei gave Funi the Z logo then why on DBZ Kai part 1 for the first episode (did) the DRAGON BALL KAI logo play instead of the DRAGON BALL Z KAI logo? It was also like this for the NEP of that episode and that's the way the song was on the bonus options. Can anyone explain this?

I'm sure they just simply overlooked it for the first episode's video reel.

Haha! That's one sweet find, thanks a lot, DHM!

I just popped the disc one of Part One and it's true, see this:

I'd take a guess and say they forgot to include the "Z KAI" logo here.

I can't believe how much better Dragon Ball Kai is with Yamamoto's music, I had to go back to the very first Part to realize it.

Toei Animation CO. LTD., could've delayed (yay?) the Yamamoto scandal until all episodes broadcast, on the JPN BD, DVD and FUNimation be released, now look what we have.. An extremely limited pack of DBZ BGMs (I love DBZ's original soundtrack but they didn't treat it well for Kai).

Knowing that also the Latin Spanish dub and Brazilian dub are based off of the NickToons version, they didn't get the ED2 neither.

Though, the BR dub is based off of NT's edition, it doesn't sound much like the English dubbed version, a lot of the script was changed.

Then it's probably a Nicktoons decision. I've only seen a few episodes here and there, but I don't even remember a credits theme, they just scrunched the credits to a corner and played ads on the rest of the screen.

Oh, lol. Then as Pokewhiz said, it's probably that Nicktoons doesn't air the credit sequence enough to justify making the song even shorter, like they did with Yeah! Break! Care! Break!,.
