Bankoku Bikkuri Shou Translation?

Post by Gaffer Tape » Sat May 19, 2012 9:04 pm

So I'm getting some conflicting information about the translation for this attack name. In Herms's Viz Translation comparison thread, he states that it translates to "International Surprise Palm," as in the palm of one's hand, but in his Daizenshuu 7 special attack guide, he translates it as "International Surprise Prize." Which is correct?

Should be Palm as far as I know.

It's worth noting that the name is a play on the name of some TV show, so it's kind of weird.

I believe it's the "International Surprise Show."

Yep, it uses the "shou" for "palm" (掌). There is another "shou" that means "prize" and looks fairly similar (賞), so maybe he misread it when going through Daizenshuu 7, or there was a typo in the book itself.

Yep. Instead of either of those, it uses the English word "show." (Well, the rest is spelled differently too, but still has the same meaning.)

On that note, it might also be worth noting that the Dragon Ball term uses abnormal kanji for the "Bankoku Bikkuri" part. As a result, some of the video games translated (well, romanized) it as "Mankoku Kyouten Shou," which would be a more logical reading. I guess the translator wasn't familiar with the attack in the series, and didn't have access to the audio files that go with it.

Okay, good! I don't have to re-record anything then. I was looking up how to spell it romanized so I could visually illustrate the joke between the show and the shou when I came across the "prize" translation and thought that I'd really screwed up somehow. Thanks, guys, for clearing that up. :D
