22nd Tenkaichi Budokai?

Post by OWmyDragonBallz » Mon May 21, 2012 10:29 pm

Please refresh my mind, but how many years exactly was the gap between the 21st and 22nd Tenkachi Budokai? I am trying to remember if it was 3 or 5 years. I could have sworn there is a minor flaw in Z during the ten day rest for the Cell Games when Roshi says 5 but it was really 3, but I am not sure.

It was 3 years. There used to be a 5 year gap in between the tournaments but after the 21st TB, it was changed to 3 years.

Then that means, Roshi has memory problems and said 5 years later instead of 3.

I caught that, too.

Incorrect dubbing or writing probably for that year change. I also remember him saying Goku and Tenshinhan had a tie.. instead of Tenshinhan winning.

No, Roushi mentioned that the time gap had been changed to 3 years instead of 5 due to the increasing popularity of the tournament.

This is correct.

It was pretty much a tie, though. Goku was slightly better, but Tenshinhan won by luck. Could just as easily have been the other way around.
Usually goes by "Kevtrev" elsewhere online.
Draws comics that may or may not have been blatantly inspired by Akira Toriyama's manga.

In Spanish Tenshinhan was the winner too, because Goku touched ground first. A tie would have been like the Other World Tournament, both touching at the same time. ;)

Could have been, yes, but it wasn't. It's a tournament with, admittedly somewhat dubious rules, but rules nonetheless. And considering it was just the previous tournament that had concluded on a, "We have no ties despite a double knock-out," well, you see where I'm going. FUNimation screwed it up, plain and simple. But as has been said, they're not the only ones who screwed up, as it was the original anime that had that "five years" line in there.

The "five years" line, in both the manga and anime, isn't a mistake, though. Like I said, Muten Roushi mentions that they changed the time gap from "5 years" to "3 years", so it'd be more frequent to accommodate the rising popularity (probably due to their displays of strength in the last tournament).

But the original post was referring to the filler scene right before the Cell Games where Muten Roshi fills everyone in on... well, events most of them were around to experience. And in that filler sequence, the anime staff has Muten Roshi mistakenly say that the 22nd Budoukai took place five years after the 21st, when, as you've said, it was only three. Not only that, but he goes on to say that the space between the 22nd and 23rd was three years, so he got one correct and one incorrect for some reason. So, yes, it is a mistake.

(Also, I think you mean, "from '5 years' to '3 years,'" not the other way around.)

Oh, that's what you mean. And yeah, thanks for the heads-up. :)
