Episode #0299! VegettoEX and Hujio discuss a non-video game of omega proportions before digging into a history and profile of Katsuyoshi Nakatusuru. Perhaps best known for emulating Akira Toriyama's art style to an uncanny degree, Nakatusuru was also solely responsible for the design of Super Saiyan 4 in "Dragon Ball GT", along with a wealth of other both subtle and significant contributions over the history of the franchise. Who was this man, how did he get started with the franchise, and how did he rise to such heights? Referenced sites:

Interesting history on Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru. I find it cool how he never met Toriyama until GT and ended up getting a personal drawing by him. Very inspiring to artists everywhere to see how far a simple fan got. Also, cannot wait until the next GT review and episode 300.
Also, are you guys ever planning to do the Dragon Ball movies, (DB 1-4), (DBZ 1-13), and the three TV specials after you finish the GT review?

Ah, great to here more on the animation supervisors of the series. Nakatsuru's most recent key animation was for One Piece #542, I believe. Nothing too special, but it's nice to see he is still around.
In terms of Dragon Ball, I know he was a key animator on the 2008 special. I'm going to go ahead and guess he did the Super Saiyan transformation scene, considering the level of detail.

Wasn't episode 300 gonna be a DBZ Movie 1 commentary?

I loved that part where you guys talked about Toriyama not meeting Nakatsuru till the very end of Dragonball.
Movie reviews and movie commentaries would be amazing. We could all be watching any movie together, you know?

Absolutely loved this episode. Nakatsuru is my main dude, second only to Toriyama
I just want to add a little something.
You guys said that he didn't draw the international Budokai covers (or maybe you said specifically the american covers, can't remember) but he did draw what ended up being Europe's Budokai 2 cover:
(At least I assume it was Nakatsuru, judging by the style of it)
Also, yeah, Movie 1 commentary would be pretty cool. I also haven't watched it in a while, so it'd be a good excuse to do it.

Great podcast. His designs seem to have more detail on them compared to Toriyama's and are few time's more Sci-Fi esc form 3 Baby Vegeta and Janemba compared to Toriyama's more plain designs like final form Freeza and his odd designs like #19 and #20.

I don't recall ever saying anything like that (what's the context / time from the show?), and I certainly would not say that about him any time ever.

Good to know. I despise all of Fox News.VegettoEX wrote:I don't recall ever saying anything like that (what's the context / time from the show?), and I certainly would not say that about him any time ever.
Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru sure is one awesome dude! Akira Toriyama can't do everything Dragon Ball related all by himself! Gotta have super talented guys like this backing him up, making his story and characters more known to the world, thus spreading joy.
So he sometimes animates One Piece too eh. So cool.
Re: Episode #0299 (20 May 2012)
Oh sorry, I guess I misunderstood you. It was at the very end of the podcast. I even went back when I heard it to make sure I wasn't hearing things. Clearly I was. LOL.VegettoEX wrote:I don't recall ever saying anything like that (what's the context / time from the show?), and I certainly would not say that about him any time ever.
Re: Episode #0299 (20 May 2012)
Unfortunately, that's wrong. He did the scene when everyone gathers again to fly to Satan's party. Look at Goku's face and thick neck in the scene and you'll see it.JulieYBM wrote:In terms of Dragon Ball, I know he was a key animator on the 2008 special.
