...what the HELL Cartoon Network!?

Post by Kirbopher » Sat Jan 21, 2006 8:36 pm

Here's something interestingly weird...Toonami is showing a REALLY old episode of Dragonball Z...and no, it's not one of the Ultimate Uncut episodes, it's one of the old Ocean Group cast episodes from the 90's. WTF CARTOON NETWORK!? They weren't doing this last weekend were they?! o_O

Does it matter?

I know, this is freakin' awesome! I got all the Ocean episodes on tape already, but getting to see them on TV again is great! Brings back so many memories. What I find unbearably funny is this episode is rated TV-PG. Well, it is the Orphan episode, one that even Saban thought wasn't suitable for syndicated audiences. XD

Really? I'm surprised they didn't skip it then. Still, it's not that I'm pissed or anything, since I like both the FUNi cast and Ocean Group, but I didn't think they're even ABLE to show these anymore...let alone bother suddenly showing it instead of the uncut episodes they were making a commercial for o_o

The thing is, FUNimation own the dub outright, and technically could have just re-released it as it is. The only thing Pioneer had was Home Video rights, which are back in FUNimation's hands now. CN probably still have the tapes for the episodes, and as they've paid for them, they can show them however, wherever they want.

The question is though.. why?

Cartoon Network has always had these episodes purchased for showing to viewers any time they want, and it's not like it's they're breaking rights rules with the Ocean group or Pioneer by showing them. What I'm surprised about is they're showing the Rock the Dragon theme when they never did on the old Toonami airings of these episodes. Have I mentioned how awesome this is, I'm actually enjoying this more than the redub (Ocean VAs and old time Shuki Levy score must have something to do with it).

I was asking for elaboration, not censorship.

I couldn't get a feel for the tone because of kirbopher's diction. I could tell he was either totally shocked or totally pissed. Excuse me for needing to discuss the matter further.

I just noticed Pigero was voiced by Tony Sampson, who plays Eddy on Ed, Edd & Eddy.

EDIT: Again Dayspring, I'm not pissed since I like the OG voice actors as well. I was just confused as to why they suddenly did this. The last time they showed these was during the "Best of DBZ" run during the weekday Toonami before that was replaced with Miguzi.

I know that now, I was just answering Blitzen since he thought I was trying to tell you to shut up.

Ah, sorry 'bout that.

Anyway, I also checked CN's schedule page. it says next up are "Showdown in the Past" and "The End of Snake Way"...were those the original titles of the Ocean dubbed episodes, or are they the names of the Ultimate Uncut episodes? o.o

I wasn't trying to get you to shut up, please don't interpret it that way because I am really not that snide nor vindictive. I just wasn't entirely sure where your comment was coming from, if you were either confused or being snide, which could be neither.

Sorry for the misunderstanding.

I'll be darned, those are indeed the episode titles for the Ocean versions of those Saiyan saga episodes. Looks like cartoon network plans on carrying through with the Ocean version, too bad they didn't start it off from "Arrival of Raditz" though. Needless to say, I find this pretty cool, and it'll prove to be just as entertaining as the FUNi redub for me since this is the dub I was introduced to. Also, I find myself preferring to connect to the Ocean dub to the rest of the DBZ dub series better than the redub. Once more, gotta say I'm glad I have all these episodes on tape already, especially considering cartoon network didn't start the Ocean episodes from the very beginning.

Well, granted I like Justin Cook a LOT more than Jason Gray-Stanford, but I can understand the connections people have with the old cast. Still, I find it odd that they just suddenly shifted with these, because now their 'uncut' part of the sentence isn't exactly going to be true o_o;;

*Kicks CN*

I knew something was up when I saw the Rock the Dragon theme tonight. I thought they just screwed up and would go back to the Redub next week. If the ARE going back to the old Ocean eps... *Kicks CN again*

Why the hell is the whole world going nuts? They're acting as if CN stopped airing premieres of the episodes. o_O The uncut episodes FINISHED their first run last year. Parents complained when the Princess Snake episode came around, so I guess CN was under pressure with the really out of place uncut DBZ airing on an earlier time.

I hope some of you folks realize CN was probably breaking FCC rules by airing that uncut at such an early time. Why else do you think it originally premiered the uncut episodes at night before [adult swim]?

Cable doesn't adhere to FCC (though FCC wants to get over them). Yeah it happened on the West Coast too. For anyone else, is it kind of weird hearing the old voices after hearing the current cast for so long?
