What if Dragonball GT continued for some time longer

Post by SSJGarfield » Tue Jun 12, 2012 9:59 am

As I might have said in another topic I got my hands on the Dragonball GT: The Complete Series boxset and re-watched it all these past few weeks and I was wondering something: What if the series was succesful enough to go on for several dozens or even a hundred episodes more, connecting the time between the Evil Dragons arc and the days of Goku Jr, about 100 years later.

I'm wondering this because in both the dub and the original Japanese version, Super Saiyan 5 was mentioned by Bulma and Vegeta before she built the Blutz wave generator that allowed Vegeta to turn Super Saiyan 4 for the first time. Do you guys think that if DBGT continued after 64 episodes and some other villain appeared that was even stronger then Omega Shenron, Super Saiyan 5 could have appeared and how the story could have gone from there?

Hope you guys could give me your thoughts about this.

God, I would have hoped not. I know Toei likes to milk the franchise, but I'd also hope that they would know when to stop in regards to certain aspects. With Goku having been out of the picture, maybe Vegeta could finally have his stress-based heart attack that Toiryama joked about and then EVERYTHING could be scaled back a few levels in terms of the ridiculousness that GT started and we could focus on the "lower tier" character instead...Trunks? Goten? Pan? Uub? Gohan? lol

It would have been interesting to see them ride it all the way into the new millennium...

I'd imagine that even Toei would know when to rein things in, so there'd be no Super Saiyan 5. They'd probably kill off Gokuu or otherwise put him out of commission again, so Vegeta would replace him as the "leader". The adventures would focus more on him and the kids (Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Pan, Oob).

I'm pretty sure 'Super Saiyan 5' was a dubism. At least, Bulma doesn't mention it in the Japanese version.

I started writting my response only to realize it all started to sound a lot like Toyble's AF: Focus on the other characters, with Vegeta as the new leader (in a king of the jingle kinda way). Everyone is strong enough to hold their own....until that one villain that is that much stronger comes along. In comes Super Saiyan 5 Goku, because...*puts sunglasses on*...if Goku can't do it, who will?

I think she does have a toss-away comment about maybe him being able to go further than Goku (maybe even mentioning 5) in the original.

Hope I didn't offend anyone by starting this topic.

I was just wondering what you guys thought if GT would have lasted for much longer. Maybe there would also be more focus on the
human Z-fighters such as Yamcha, Kuririn and Tenshinhan and with some help from Toriyama, they could have come up with background stories of them and have a peek in the lives they had before they met Goku.

No fucking way, the Earthlings had looooong been shafted by the rising power of the Super Saiyans and they wouldn't go backwards in a sequel series to Z. It'd be irrelevant.

I think they would have just made another series if GT didn't had poor rating. The better the ratings are then the chances of them doing another show since they know that they can make more money of it. In a marketing stand point of view, I won't be surprise if they did end up making a SSj5 if they continued the show since having a SSj5 would have fans go watch the show. And that they can make a shit load of toys and other merchandise of the SSj5 transformation.

Well a lot of possibilities can happen, but do you mean what would Toei add after the Shadow Dragon arc or how would the series be different with better rating and went on longer? I truly believe that if GT had done better than had did during broadcasting, they most likely would have saved the Shadow Dragon arc for the very end, seeing how fitting it is for the last saga, would've added a new saga in between and extended the 17 arc.

But if you are asking how the series would have continued after the Shadow Dragon arc, then most likely something similar to Toyble's AF, as its the most logical progression to the series I can think of. However, given how Toei treated GT, I would assume that they would cut most of the Goten Saiyaman stuff (unless they are in need of filler) and make Gokuu fight Xicor (or whatever villain they create) much quicker.

I doubt that. They really showed that they love Goku to much to do that.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

If GT did well then they would have just made another show instead. It seems like a logical choice it seem like GT was plan to be short from the very start and if the show had better ratings then Toei would have see that they could make another show for money. I think they would have just another season of GT or the next series focus on Goku Jr. and Vegeta Jr. given how GT ended.

If there was gonna be Super Saiyan 5 in anime series at some point in Dragonball GT and beyond for real. A character designer for Dragonball GT named Nakatsuru Katsuyoshi, who actually designed Super Saiyan 4 and the appearance for the form. Would have come up with an idea design for Super Saiyan 5 Goku, if the Dragonball GT producers asked him to. I have been reading your interviews on GT.

Yeah, probably. I guess that's what I/we want, rather than Toei. Is Gokuu really that much of a driving force for the series, especially after Z and/or in GT? I mean, look how many times Toriyama put him out of commission in Z. Then again, he was still always building the story up to his return, with the other main characters constantly going, "I wish Gokuu was here!"

I believe that Goku is Dragon Ball for most. Didn't Toriyama admit that he initially wanted to turn Gohan into the main character in the Buu saga but ended up disliking it? So yeah, even if he wasn't around the entire time, he still has the strongest presence in the story.

He said he didn't feel Gohan was suited for the role, but that doesn't mean that Gokuu is Dragon Ball. I see your point, but the glaring sections of the story where Gokuu is entirely absent or just not fighting (most of the Freeza and Cell arcs) say otherwise.

Actually to me all those sections do is reinforce Goku's position because, as you yourself mentioned, they are mostly used as build-up for his arrival. It's actually a smart move , not to overuse the MC. And besides, aside from the first half of the Freeza saga and Cell saga and the beginning of the Buu saga, he has always been around.

Yeah, suppose so. Sucks, to be honest. Not that I don't like Gokuu, but I dislike how everyone seems to bang on about him when he's not even there and the whole situation just hinges on him. Like after he got beaten up by Ginyuu and was in the healing tank while everyone else were fighting Freeza, and then Gokuu comes back with some fucking uber-Zenkai and is shoved to the forefront again.

While I agree with the idea in general, I prefer Goku as the main character, mostly because I don't see any of the others fitting that role as well as he does. The passing of the torch trope is nice and all, but only so long it's to someone that I find as entertaining as the first one.

I agree with SSJGarfield, they maybe weaker than the saiyans but I reckon the Earthlings should have attention paid to them as more than just fodder again just like Dragonball.

I hated that Toriyama made them into fodder in Z and GT, I really did...That's why I love Dragonball the most.
