All time favorite episode?

Post by the_abberration » Sun Jan 22, 2006 10:37 am

Throughout Dragonball, Z, or even GT. What would your favorite episode be? Share it here and also why. Did it make you laugh or even cry? So if you happen to stop on by. Come and share and don't be shy.

:P My favorite epsiode is "Free the Future", when Mirai Trunks returns to the future to wipe out the androids and Cell. I don't really know why, but this has just always been one of my favorite episodes.
I really, really need to get back into the habit of posting.

Eh, I've only seriously started watching the show with the release of the UUE on www.zip.ca. I've now finally seen the first three episodes in Japanese. :P

I can't wait to rent the one where they fight the Saiyan Ghosts. That was always my favorite (if we don't consider TV specials as episodes, in which case Bardock is my favorite) since I have a Saiyan Empire fetish. All the Saiyan filler scenes make fanboygasm. :P

I would have to say...

The once where Cell is staggered in two punches by Gohan...that was a display of true power in action, although I wish he would have beat him up more, it was good to finally see Cell being outclassed, especially when Gohan lets Cell hit him in the face to prove that his full power is nothing.

Without a doubt, for me, the final episode of DragonBall GT. It just brought the entire anime trilogy series in such a full circle, especially for a guy like me whom views GT in the anime canon. Goku and Shenron's final departure from the "present timeframe" was so emotional for me, the music in the Japanese version can literally water my eyes, it certainly helped that Goku just bid a proper farewell to all of his best friends in true Goku fashion. Then there's the final 8 minutes, taking place 100 years later and following the events in the Goku Jr. special, something that made me love this scene all the more is actually something I figured out not that long ago regarding original DB. In the "Wedding" mini-saga, where Goku and Chichi meet Grandpa Gohan and the Other World queen, Anine, we're told that due to the Spirit furnace, a spirit is allowed to return to the physical plane a century following his passing or during a special occasion.

My interpretation of Goku's final departure in GT actually relates to that long forgotten episode, as Goku not only appears a 100 years following his final departure to visit Goku Jr. (the special), but also attended his descendant's first real battle at the Tenkaichi Budokai (special occasion if I ever knew one). All this notwithstanding, still can't bring tears to my eyes as much as the final 4 minute stroll Goku makes after Pan misses him. The DAN DAN theme being played in its entirety, Goku remembering every major event occurring in his life time, then leaving us all on the Nimbus for one final farewell. 110% confirmed, GT episode 64 is the absolute best episode in my book.

Like Conan, Episode 64 of GT. I cry like a baby every time I see that episode. Gokuu is just the ultimate pure character, and seeing the relationships he's forged over his life and how much he means to so many people is just so touching. It's the perfect ending to the series.

I think my favorite episode is the one when Gohan ascends to Super Saiyan 2. My favorite character gaining control of all that raw power. And then I saw it in Japanese, and that song. I just touches me.
Even I became a loser when I made one of these...

My favourite has to be when Goku lands on Namek. It's like he's changed so much after all that training under 100G and it's the first time we see Goku so sure of himself.

I loved watching that episode too, the dub wasn't anything special, but watching the original is like a movie. If you watch from episode 1 in Japanese, due to the footage being uncensored completely, it actually seems like you've been waiting longer for this moment to come.

And they play that tune when he finally lands and gets out of the spaceship, the hope remains one, the 'dum dum dum' one. It sets the mood perfectly. Also the fact that no time is wasted, one second he's taking off and the next Rikoom is spinning round in circles.

Another thing that makes that episode so special is the angles they use to portray Goku when he's getting ready to get off the space ship. They don't show you his face until the last shot.

100% agreed.

My favorite episodes..I can't exactly say an episode is better than the others, so I'll do it be series.

Dragon Ball: The episode Goku defeats Piccolo Daimao. Goku's first true enemy in all of Dragon Ball. He avenges the deaths of his friend and his teacher. His punching through Daimao's stomach was just an incredible scene. Especially when after it's all done, Goku's sitting on the ground, one arm busted while he's beaten. He smiles and gives a victory sign.

Dragon Ball Z: Majin Buu's defeat by the Super Genki Dama. Goku recalling how troublesome Buu was and bidding him farewell while wishing that he becomes good and stronger so they could fight once again. That with the music playing in the background just made it so great.

Dragon Ball GT: Exact same reasons stated in the quote above.

..Hm, Goku really did make the trilogy a great thing to enjoy.

Mine is "Free The Future". This episode gave closing to Trunks. So many great Trunks quotes come from that episode, this is one of the moments like Meri was talking about on the Podcast last night with Trunks, he just has this attitude with him, like "screw you, you're going down". Plus, when you watch him kill the Androids, if you first imagine that scene of him walking through the rain in the History Of Trunks, the scene is so much better, atleast for me.

Uh, yeah, I don't even like GT past the first 16 episodes but I cry big time eveytime I see the last episode. It just has such a heavy feeling of closure....

It's not my favorite though. I really like the episode where Gokuh finally returns to fight Nappa after pretty much everyone has died. You can probably guess I also like the one where he arrives on Namek to fight Recoome since the circumstances are so similar. You're half cursing Gokuh for being so late, and half extremely relieved that he finally got there. And then he makes very short work of the enemy who you've been dying to see suffer for ages. Very good formula there

In Dragonball, I have to say my favorite episode was during Gokuh's fight with Piccolo jr after he has returned to normal size and they really start to go hand to hand. The atmosphere of it was excellent and there were all sorts of great new techniques like Gokuh's foot kamehameha and Piccolo's homing blast. It also showed how Gokuh had changed quite a bit as the series was coming to a close.

The episode "Save the World". Seeing all the Z fighters attacking Cell when they had no chance of victory was an awe inspiring sight. Cell talking trash to Gohan and almost killing him was great, too.

Episode 122 (original Japanese version) of DBZ is my all-time favorite.

Firstly, I love the aura of mystery that built up before episode 122: finding out that Freeza and King Cold are due to arrive on Earth to everyone's fear and then assembling to prepare for battle; Freeza having images of Super Saiyajin Goku after landing on Earth; a 'strange youth' (Trunks) appearing in time and clocking out Freeza's henchmen with his sword; Trunks turning Super Saiyajin and easily defeating Freeza and King Cold to everyone's awe; and Trunks predicting Goku's landing accurately, but with everyone still clueless as to who Trunks is.

Episode 122 builds up even more of that mystery before letting it all out beautifully. During the private conversation, I love how the mystery built up even more by Trunks also going Super Saiyajin after Goku upon his request to everyone's awe, and which also refutes any previous doubts about Trunks not being a Saiyajin. Of course, the short, unexpected dual between Trunks and Goku in Super Saiyajin form was the most exciting part. Although Trunks reveals everything such as his alternative timeline, future threats, Goku's viral heart infection etc., it was done very skillfully and in a serious manner by drawing upon the aura of suspense. Thus, for action, character development, drama and storyline all handled well, episode 122 is exemplary.

Unfortunately, it's a real shame that they started off that episode with their shittiest animation group. :\ You'd figure that with Freeza's death, they'd show some kind of continuation by showing the better group do their work with it.

Different animation groups? I thought it was all Toei. (I was referring to the original Japanese version of episode 122.)

I have a lot of favorite episodes but here are some of my top favs:

Dragonball: I love the entire King Piccolo Saga and Piccolo Junior Saga. For the King Piccolo saga, I loved the very first episode actually where Goku takes off after Tambourine, mad as hell. Really a deep thing to watch, considering Krillin and Goku began as rivals. Seeing Goku so deeply hurt was a amazing. I think that's where we see the first real rage from Goku. Sure he'd gotten angry in the earlier sagas but that's the first I really remember seeing pure 'hate' and 'rage' in those eyes...very cool.

In the Piccolo Junior Saga, I love the episode where everyone comes back together for the tournament and we see Goku as an adult finally. Talk about a growth spurt! Everyone's reaction to his height and power maturity and what not was great to see. I especially loved Bulma and Krillin's reaction...

Dragonball Z: Oh, pretty much any episode with Gohan is my favorite. But here are a handful that I absolutely adore. I'm a sucker for sap though so consider yerself warned:

The very first episode where we first meet Gohan. Man, what a cute intro. We get to see his curiosity and his sweet nature, so much like his father's. Yet, Gohan isn't a carbon copy. Seeing him frightened like any child was kind of nice. Plus, Goku's reaction while he was searching for him was great too, namely his yelling at that mountain lion.

The episode where Goku lands on Namek. I haven't seen this uncut yet *pouts* but I love the dub version of it, although it makes me angry to think of all the stuff they probably cut out and changed and I didn't know it. But Goku coming in out of nowhere and rushing to his son was awesome. Poor Gohan looked like Hell just hit him twice and now The Ginyu Force are gonna hafta deal with Daddy....

All those cute little scenes in the Time Chamber were episode winners for me. Seeing Goku carrying his exhausted son to bed piggy back style always makes me smile. Likewise, when they show them playing in the bath or playing chase with one another...awesome. I also liked how they had Gohan wake up from a nightmare and we learn he's been sick...wish they had shown us a little more of him _getting_ sick than just telling us though but aside from that...very cute.

Gohan going Level 2. Awesome, awesome, awesome. I love that scene in both dub and original although I prefer the original simply because "Spirit Vs. Spirit" sets the scene so well. The closeup on Gohan's eyes was great too because you can see both sadness and anger. Always a neat combo in that kid. And since Goku has been dropping hints all along about his son's power and we know this level is different than the others we have seen, the whole scene has a 'Look out Cell' feeling to it.

Dragonball GT: I'm not real fond of GT on the whole but I do like a few episodes. I think the classic one though is where Goku loses in the Junior Division because he was talking to Vegeta and Vegeta takes on this 'I don't believe this' look. Makes me laugh every time.

Toei was in charge, but they had different groups animating different parts. That's why you'll notice varrying levels of quality from one episode to the next. There's a few threads on the boards that break it down from Best to Triangle Crap.

To give a more detailed explanation, here are comparisons of best to worst quality between the two episodes in that specific scene.

Image
Image
Image

Notice how very little effort and detail is put into the worst group's animation. Especially with how terribly off the character designs are.

Getting back on topic, I'd have to say another moment I enjoyed was Cell's debut. Everyone was so busy worrying about beating the Artificial Humans..and then something with the Ki of Goku and others appears out of nowhere, bringing havoc to towns and making them into ghost towns.

I recall when I first saw it. The episode gave such an eerie feeling to it and was a complete slap in the face in terms of suprise. Just when you thought things couldn't get worse with everyone being unable to beat the Artificial Humans and Goku still recovering, Cell comes to everyone's present timeline to absorb the Artificial Humans.
