Interestingly, the fact that they used dubtitles (probably from the actual script from the English version, since the actual English subs are closer to the Japanese version) and the fact the episode's title screen has no actual title written there neither in English nor in Japanese makes me think they licensed the series already planning for a possible future dub.

omegalucas wrote:Considering the English dub isn't that bad in Kai, I'm willing to let it pass. Though it'll depend in whether they're basing it on the Nicktoons dub (Special Beam Cannon and OVER 9000!) or the "uncut dub" (Makkankosappo and Over 8000!). Hopefully is the latter. We'll know it for sure when it gets to episode 3.
Almost 100% certain it's the uncut dub.

And yeah, there were a few instances of subs for no actual talking on the first episode.

They did fix all the instances where "Son Goku" is mentioned in the audio though, but not "Son Gohan." They also used the correct "Freeza" instead of the i-spelling. That said, the dialogue had all of the English dub's quirks including Chichi as Gokû's childhood sweetheart and even literal translations of expressions such as "Don't be such a stranger. You don't have to wait for an invitation, you know!"

Also, they removed the ED, though the next episode preview is still there.

I think Toei might be giving out the dub's scripts as English TLs to give licensors less trouble. They did that with newer licenses of Z and GT too (polish GT overdub uses the English dub script complete with "Do I have to go back to school?", and the new Serbian and Croatian dubs of Z use the English dub script as well complete with Gohan wanting to be an orthopedist).

Pretty sure Toei just gave away pre-blanked versions to all of Europe -- French subbed airing was the same way too.

If they plan on doing a dub then for gods sake don't use dubisms, like Tien, etc. :|

This DBK Portuguese release is really odd, they used the Japanese audio but with dubtitles.. doesn't make much sense.
Puto wrote:They also used the correct "Freeza"
That's just one way of writing the character's name, it can also be Frieza, Friza, Freezer, Frizer and whatever anyone can come up with.

"Correct" is subjective.

By the way, if it's based on the uncut FUNi Kai dub then it'll be Mankankosappo.

You know what I meant. Don't be so pedantic. I can call him Phlyeza and still be technically correct to the kana if I want -- doesn't change the fact that it's idiotic.

It's almost certainly based on the uncut dub, since Bulma still calls Mut--err I mean "Mestre Roshi" a pervert.

And to be honest, I'd pass on a dub, but eh.

Phlyeza?

It clearly sounds Furiiza, but the R can and is swapped for L too.

Luffi's also Ruffi.

There is a long i, same as in Freeza's name. If you can spell that name Friеza, then you can spell Luffy's name with an ie too.

So...I just got around to watching Kai on SIC Radical...I didn't make it through the Dragon Ball part of it. The subtitles are god-awful.

Sticking to Bardock:
"Now everything will change" is subtitled as "It's always like this"
"And your fate too" (From the "my fate, Kakarrot's fate" part) is subbed as "Let's settle this"
And the cherry on top of that speech is Bardock saying "KORE DE SAIGOU DA!!!", which is subbed as...anyone care to guess...that's right: "Ka-Ka-Kakarot!" -_-'

It's also worth noting they're going with "Saiyan", a la our manga (that kinda stopped at volume 17 a while back). I only made it up to where some character named "Korin showed up in the subtitles, when he's not even mentioned. I'm surprised they got Freeza right. Sad that they didn't with Shenlong.

PS: Bardock Special with Boo arc music feels awkward.

EDIT: I just saw Puto's image from the last page. WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK? We've ALWAYS had it as Tenshinhan.

That was just a timing bork. Read what was said.

And Karin was mentioned in the audio, just... not with the English dub spelling.

Even taking the subtitles of that scene as a whole, it does not make up for it. Do they also use the "childhood sweethearts" line here? (Since it seems closer to the english version...)

Also, what's this Luffy talk going on about? Eiichiro Oda spells that name as LUFFY using our roman letters. I don't see what that has to do with Freeza. (and no, Puto, this last part was directed at you lol)

What's the logo they used, Dragon Ball Kai or Dragon Ball Z Kai?

I'm gonna guess and say it's Z Kai?

Yeah, and the subs say Z Kai too, since they're translated from the English dub.

Yep. And there's many other lines that are very obviously directly translated from the English dub (uncut dub, thankfully). At least they didn't keep any old Portuguese dubisms like Guerreiros do Espaço, Coraçãozinho de Satan, Songoku, Cachalote, etc.

Or Sangoku, like in the Final Bout box lol. Still, I'd almost prefer keeping those in exchange for keeping Tenshinhan... (luckily, he's not all that much in Kai)

Once again, I'm filled with disappointment in the translation of a shonen series in Portugal. ASA's manga still holds up better (despite their goof-ups)

Sangoku is if I believe, the French translation of Son Goku, and the old Portuguese dub used Songoku/Sõgoku.

The Portuguese dub of the 4th Dragon Ball film (The Power to Power) had different VAs and Goku Son was Goku, not the bloody annoying Songoku every single time.

It was always one of the most frequently used spellings even in Spain and Portugal. (In fact, our european Final Bout is in spanish and uses Sangoku on the packaging.

Was there even a dub for that here in Portugal? AB never even had the rights for that, to the point where it wasn't in the French movie boxes.
Fortunately for our sanity, the Sangoku and Songoku spellings went away and the proper Son Goku stuck.

The Spain dubs of DB rarely ever referred to Goku as Son Goku, Songoku or anything like it. Though, Son Gohan was Songohanda (Castellano dub).

Yeah, it's an old dub but it aired recently on SIC Kids this previous weekend on a Saturday at 3am. The only VA said to remain from the original Portuguese dub was Bulma's Cristina Cavalinhos according to ANN.

But well, the letter E in Frieza's silent while in Luffie wouldn't, so this is the difference.

Still haven't found anywhere on the web the DBZK 01 PT-ish version just to watch it for a laugh and I don't even have ZON, MEO or whatever the damn channel's on.
