Why does FUNi release DBZ on BD/DVD when they'll cancel it?

They were removed, although the Bardock special retained its "Dragon Ball Z Special" title card.

Also on the single, I believe the frame before the Japanese text for "Planet Kanassa" comes up is freeze-framed so the text doesn't come in.

Re: Why does FUNi release DBZ on BD/DVD when they'll cancel
Forgive me for jumping into this late but there are currently three different complete Dragonball boxsets out on the market right now. There are the Orange Bricks, Kai, and the Dragonboxes(kind of expensive but still available). Honestly, for awhile I though the market was over saturated. Funimation should pay me for saying this(
) but you can literally get the show anyway you like it legally: HD; SD; Japanese; English; it's all there.
I thought the Ultimate Uncut Editions was cancelled because we were in the middle of making the jump to HD. Correct me if I'm wrong but a year later we saw the release of the Orange Bricks which aimed to shoot for High Definition(whether or not they succeeded at this has been brought up numerous times). Plus they did what they were supposed to do; they provided a portal for Funimation to redubb the earlier portions of the show that were done by Ocean.
The singles and DBZ for Blu-ray where just the tipping point for the over saturation. The singles came after the Steel cases(which came with more then one movie) and Blu-ray release came out right after the Dragonbox and Kai finished-not to mention the Orange Bricks were on store shelves through all of this. They were canned because there wasn't enough reception for them. By this time most fans had a competed collection of the show(and or movies). Plus I don't think people want to go back to "season 1 part 1" after getting Boxsets that pretty much cover each saga.
In a few years or so when the market is hungry again expect to see a proper/complete Blu-ray(or whatever is out at the time) release.

Well, not quote. The Orange Bricks were on DVD, so they weren't high-definition. You can make arguments for or against the picture quality generally, but the resolution of the output isn't up for debate. It was on DVD, so it was standard definition.SparkyPantsMcGee wrote: I thought the Ultimate Uncut Editions was cancelled because we were in the middle of making the jump to HD. If you mean that the Orange Bricks were an opportunity for FUNi to redub the start of the series, they'd already done that with the Ultimate Uncut. If you were talking about the UU releases, then they hadn't actually gotten to the point where their original "season 3" had started, I don't believe.

I should have said widescreen, because that's what I was thinking. You're right it wasn't HD, but it was formatted for widescreen HD televisions which were becoming the standard. Also I was talking about UU when I brought up the re-dubbing thing. I could have sworn they had reached their season 3 though...at least on Toonami.LiamKav wrote: Well, not quote. Yeah, on TV I'm pretty sure they got all the way through.
I wonder, was the UU done primarily with the TV audience in mind, the DVD sales, or were they both equal?

Funimation wanted a consistent dub with their actors, so they decided to go back and redub everything that was done with the Ocean actors.LiamKav wrote:Yeah, on TV I'm pretty sure they got all the way through.

While having a consistent in-house dub might've been a benefit, I don't think it was the primary reason they went back over the earlier episodes, and I don't think it would've been enough to prompt them to do so on its own.Gonstead wrote:Funimation wanted a consistent dub with their actors, so they decided to go back and redub everything that was done with the Ocean actors.
The main reason we saw the UUEs was to get the first 60-some episodes out in the standard, bilingual, uncut format they'd been using for years. And since the Ocean dubs came with their own soundtrack and were fit to the edited versions of those episodes, they had to do a redub if they wanted an uncut English track.
As for whether they were aiming for the TV or DVD audience, I'd say both. Obviously they fit the DVD format FUNimation had been using for years, and it was the first time that material was properly available. My guess is they probably would've put the DVDs out even without a TV avenue to pursue, but having the episodes uncut was a draw for TV as well. It let viewers know there was something new and edgy they'd missed, sort of like airing a "lost" episode or season. That's why the UUE-marking was so over-the-top hardcore as well. These episodes had been out for years, but never like this (!!!!!!).
