It’d have to be somewhat more realistic as well. Similar to Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy, but with more creative liberties taken. It’d be a pastiche of the entire Shounen manga genre, and it’d be much shorter and self-contained. See below, but maybe Vegeta and Trunks wouldn’t even exist.

Gokuu would be portrayed as a much more selfish character whose dangerous actions would have major consequences, and he’d be more like an antihero. Alan Moore would explore an actual abusive Stockholm Syndrome relationship between Piccolo and Gohan (the latter of whom having serious “daddy issues” due to Gokuu’s continual abandonment). Piccolo would have some kind of odd stench just because. Vegeta would be even more narcissistic than in the original story and he would’ve raped Blooma (think of the relationship between the Comedian and the first Silk Spectre).

She would bear his child, Trunks, who’d be homosexual and quite sexually frustrated/aggressive due to there being fuck all eligible men to fuck in his apocalyptic time. Trunks would go missing for days on end, either futilely fighting the Androids or having various abusive liaisons with young males who’d turned to becoming rent boys to survive, both on money and protection from Trunks. This future would be even more grim than in the original story.

All in all…it wouldn’t even be Dragon Ball anymore. We definitely wouldn’t have all the specials and movies, save for maybe one that Moore would complain about. It’d be cool to see, though. I loved Watchmen.

It wouldn't be Dragon Ball and quite honestly I think it would just plain suck.
I'm re-watching Dragon Ball GT in full on my blog. Check it out if you're interested in my thoughts on the series as I watch through it!

So it'd be almost exactly the same, except with the happy colorful supa-shonen paint filed off so the ugly truth of Dragonball is revealed.

Frank Miller's Dragon Ball Z:

Piccolo: "I've just KIDNAPPED a traumatized youngster. Strong boy. For his age, he's damn strong. Son Gohan. Age 4. Brave boy. Damn strong. Not that he's got a PRAYER of ESCAPING my GRIP--- but he's STRONG. Very promising. He just might DO. He just MIGHT. Welcome to MY world, Son Gohan. You poor boy. Welcome to HELL. Just look at him. He's a BABY. And I'm TORTURING him. It's a TERRIBLE thing to do. But it's the only WAY. It's the only WAY."
Kentai wrote:Son Gokuu is a fascinating character anyway, because he is - at face value, anyway - an idiot savant. But he's also a fighter, through and through [...] he fight until he has, in no uncertain terms, beaten his enemy on terms they can both acknowledge. He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Piccolo: SHUT UP! I'll do the talking here!

Grant Morrison's Dragon Ball Z:

Goku: "The Overworld spirals into a neverending Dayspring, the Serpentine Road drawing out to meet the end of the Everwas. I brace the emerald grass of the solemn little GodWorld where the Catfish Ether Man waits to teach me his trade. This is the end of the Age of Gods. This is the beginning of the SaiyanTime. I can see the universe's grids. Zur-en-arrh. A song that will save the world. These are our stories."

No idea.

What if Orson Welles wrote Dragon Ball?

It was his childhood Power Pole!

Then there's Mark Waid's Dragonball:

Trunks (a borderline sociopath after seeing the hell of his future) comes back in time and kills Freeza after Goku refuses to kill him for slaughtering much of the population of Earth, including Chi-Chi. After Kami thanks Trunks, Goku vanishes for a few years, during which, Vegeta becomes a tyrant, slaughtering people on the basis that they may be threats, but neutralising villains like the Androids, Babidi and Cooler in the process. However, while fighting Cell, Tenshinhan explodes, taking Cell with him. The explosion devastates 5% of the Earth's surface. This makes Goku think for a moment that maybe abandoning the Earth wasn't such a good idea and causes even more destruction.

I always thought that DB could have used some more realism in terms of characters development and feelings , but reading this....no, just no.

No, because Gokuu was never portrayed as an antihero, all that stupid selfish shit that he did always worked out in the end, and most of his enemies ended up becoming his closest friends. Throughout the series, Gokuu was depicted as a pure-hearted, incorruptible, happy-go-lucky hero who everyone counted on, despite being such an unreliable and self-absorbed Saiyan bastard. And the Stockholm Syndrome relationship between Gohan and Piccolo was never actually explored; it's just a theory from real-life. Piccolo was never stated to have an odd stench either, nor was Vegeta stated to have raped Blooma.

Trunks' sexuality was never stated; in fact, apart from the obvious gay and raging straight characters like Blue and Kame-sennin respectively, no-one's sexuality is explicitly stated in the story. Nothing about rent boys was detailed in Trunks' destroyed future.

Though Trunks's blushing around Vegeta can give off the wrong message until we actually learned who he was.

As well as dub Trunks' line of "You wanna see my sword, huh?" Talking of which, I think I recall someone actually making a parody of that scene where Trunks just drops his trousers and then, like in the actual dub, Great King Kold says, "Yes, what fine craftsmanship."

I would also love to know how Frank Miller and Alan Moore would handle the women of DB. I remember how both writers got into a bit of controversy about how they portrayed women in their comics, especially Miller.

And speaking of which...

That's what I said, same events without the shonen bullshit.

It doesn't have to be explored, because it simply is.

My senses were tingling and I come running. The "shonen paint" as you call it, keep it from being anything like that .
Besides, this has nothing to do with the genre, it's simply a light hearted story. And taking that away doesn't t automatically have to result in grimdark.

No, it just paints over the consequences. Much like nobody cares that Vegeta straight-up murders a guy in the Android arc.
