Edits You Actually Liked?

Post by TheBlackPaladin » Sat Jul 07, 2012 8:40 pm

I was thinking the other day, there's been a couple places where I actually prefer the edited version. They're not many, but they exist. Some examples that immediately come to mind...

1) The Nicktoons broadcast version of when Freeza impales Kuririn. There's one very specific aspect of this scene that I vastly prefer over the uncut version. Because the graphic nature of the scene necessitated that they edit out some of the footage, in order to prevent the scene from sounding awkward, they moved the insert song, "Only A Chilling Elegy," up a bit so that it started playing a tad earlier than it normally would. So, because the song starts playing earlier, the chorus starts singing at the precise moment that Freeza opens his eyes. I know that's a small thing, but I LOVED the altered timing of the music placement there. It helped to (very effectively) reinforce that Freeza was about to do something terrible.

2) Believe it or not...I actually really like an edit on the Toonzai version, as well. In the scene where Chiaotzu sacrifices himself trying to kill Nappa, they edited out all of Chiaotzu's dialogue with Tenshinhan. I actually kind of liked that. Someone once told me that emotional moments are at their best when they're done in subtext rather than text...meaning, the less you have to spell out for the audience, the better. This was, in my mind, an example of that. I felt the scene was more effective without Chiaotzu saying anything, because between his silence and Ten's begging him not to do something he'll regret, we just get this sad, sinking feeling that Chiaotzu's going to kill himself, and the tension is more effectively mounted that way...until it's completely ruined with the utterly pointless sparkles when he explodes, of course, but it was great up until that point.

What about you guys? Were there any scenes or even lines you preferred in the edited version?
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:

All 4Kids Edits:
1. Spirit Blast (don't like the name Spirit Bomb very much)
2. Galick Blast (same as #1)
3. Chaozu's Wonderful Pink Sparkly Suicide (such a pretty way to end its worthless life)
4. Nappa's Sparkle Death (same as #3)
5. Friеza's nor male nor female, no sex gender (almost unnoticeable but kinda liked it)

I'm surprised they kept Kuririn impaled by Friеza scene on US television whereas some other countries would have completely eliminated it.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

I like some of the edited dialogue better than the official uncut lines.

"That was a bad move kid!" was delivered and sounded better than "Now you're gonna DIE!" is an example.

Yeah.

Like Cell's "You're all gunna DIIIIEEE!"

Dameon Clarke is a great actor, make no mistake, but that line... eesh. I don't remember what that was changed to, though.

I have no idea what you're talking about... Anyone care to explain?

Oh my God..........REALLY? I....really? Dear God, I........really!?

Somebody actually thought that there are people on this planet who would be offended by THAT!?

What kind of person is in charge of deciding these edits!? For that matter, who's in charge of hiring for that job? Does the CW have a department whose job it is to look for the most easily offended people in the world? At this rate, they're just going to keep getting more and more conservative to the point where they don't even do edits, they'll just air a blank white screen for a half hour for kids to stare at like zombies.

I think they should have adjusted Piccolo to have a more human-like skintone.

I wonder if there's any other random edits like that that we're not aware of.

On that same note, I love how the closeup shot of Krillin gasping and widening his eyes was moved to when Freeza impaled him. It was very effective in how we didn't see it but we can tell that it happened and it hurt. A lot.

And when Gohan screams, "You Monster!" in the Nicktoons version, the background goes all red and the song makes a sort of sound that goes with the sudden appearance with it.

I actually do remember seeings Krillin's edited impalement. I absolutely agree that starting 'Elegy' before absolutely built it up.

Also "Dude, my truck!". It's just so randomly human, and I'm a bit perturbed that people were explicitly asking for it's removal on future Kai sets, if only because if I had to keep one edit, I'd keep one that would make me burst out laughing every time.

Though I can't think of specific examples, Cell had a lot of great death euphemisms, if only because Cell's devilish ham makes them a lot more fun. Freeza, as steadfast as Chris Ayres was in being amazing, couldn't pull that off with the generic threats he was spouting at the end of his fight.

I liked it when Krillin was killed. His voice cut off rather disturbingly.

I like how when Goku shutting his eyes and succumbing to death for the first time was edited making him say "Sounds-" and then seemingly cut off by death itself.

The edited line for Freeza's final statement I felt was better: "Or better still... to be crushed... like an insect... AT THE WHIM OF YOUR MASTER!"

Where those numbers at the bottom on the screen on TV too? Every time I see that scene online those numbers are running. Was it really an edit or is someone just messing around?

That's a timecode you use for purposes of video editing, which should not be on the completed master.

I always thought it was more effective when we didn't see the details of Cell vomitting up 18, instead we only hear it. Particularly, at least in the original DBZ edit, we see Gohan looking at Cell off-camera, and once we hear the vomit, his mouth slowly turns into a grin.

I really loved "You're goin'...to pay...for that !", instead of "I will...make you...suffer !" during Goku's SSJ transformation.

I agree, totally awesome !! I also liked the response from his opponent. EPIC

The Nicktoons broadcast version has some qualities (some cool edits, Yamamoto BGM until 62nd episode), I can't bring myself to delete it from my computer.

Do we know if the TV-edit lines were recorded first? Because ease with which the edited lines fit leads me to think so.

I dunno. I felt the latter line had really emotion to it as Goku's rage built.
