So, if this is taking place during the Boo arc and not just retelling it, how involved will Mr. Satan and Videl be? Not the biggest elephant in the room, but he's certainly taking up space.

The changes in The First are anything but minor.

I hadn't thought of the "Toriyama involvement" as meaning he may have designed some new movie bad guys; I hope that's true. The more I think about it the more I would rather have a brand new story; the reason I stopped playing the yearly videogames is because they just kept retelling the show over and over.

I mean, it's been a while since I've seen the Buu arc (years? Probably years, as weird as that sounds to me) and it is kinda special to me in that it's the first one I saw in Japanese, and it's got Majin Vegeta and fusions in it, but it's more difficult to get excited for something when you already know the story.
On hiatus.

Am I the only one that feels that this is a little...too soon. I guess they got a few months to rebuild hype and nostalgia, but still, Kai didn't finish that long ago. Oh well, I guess Toei saw how well the whole movie marketing thing worked with Strong World.
Is this another Dragon Ball re-birth before the thing's even died again?
Oh, and does Toei still do the 'Film Festival, double feature' things or are most of their movies now stand alone showings?- I'd really like this thing to be a 90 minute epic.

I was thinking about a new DB movie a couple of days ago and to see this being announced, well a lot of fangirling was involved.

I hope this movie will be structured like DBZ movie 13, in that it feels more like a film, rather than just an extended episode like most of the other DB films.
Just another Dragon Ball fangirl in the world.

DB & Tiger and Bunny are my main fandoms, along with many other animes.

Yeah, I've been having similar thoughts. It doesn't really feel like some big new thing because there's a new announcement every single year lately. Episode of Bardock, PETSS, JSAT, new video games, DBSD, Kai. It doesn't really feel like some special revival when it seems like there's literally something in production at all times.

I'm the only one who is not excited for this movie yet? I mean we know nothing about the film and everyone is jumping for joy. I think we should wait until we more info and a trailer before we get all hype up.

I'm trying to keep my expectations low for now, but I will admit, when I saw the D page, I struggled to contain myself.

Just copy/pasting an entry that I posted a few hours ago on my Blog regarding this.

Right now, I feel like just about the worst DragonBall fan alive. Last night we got confirmation that a new DragonBall Movie is in production. Aside from that, as of this entry, we have nothing else confirmed. There are a few unconfirmed rumors floating around regarding a release date, Toriyama's involvement, and what Era the film will be set in. But since they are all unconfirmed, I find it pointless to mention them as they don't really have any significance as to what I want to say here. Regardless, you'd think that as a DragonBall fanatic, I'd be jumping for joy with this news. But I'm not.

In the past four years, we've gotten three newly animated DragonBall features. Heya! Son Goku and his Friends Return in 2008, The Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans in 2010, and Episode of Bardock in 2011. While the 2008 Special was absolutely brilliant, the two that followed were not only lackluster, but just predictable rehashes of the same stuff we've seen a million times before.

That's what I'm afraid of. Even the bulk of the original 13 Z-Era Movies only provided fans with roughly 50 minutes of predictable plots and characters that were mere shells of themselves. Frankly, I think that the way Toei treated Krillin and Vegeta in their Movies are no different from the way FUNimation did in their Dub of the DragonBall Z TV series. Krillin is just pure comic relief and played off as a nothing while Vegeta acts like he's got a stick up his ass every second he's on screen. They've always just taken one aspect of the characters personalities and wrote them like that. Like I said, a shell of themselves. Plus, the story lines were normally blatant ripoffs of prior story lines in the Manga. Movie 1 has Gohan kidnapped, just like Raditz did in the Manga. Movie 4 has an old Namekian using the Dragon Balls to regain his youth just like Piccolo Daimao. Movies 5 and 6 featured the brother of Freeza (Who was voiced by Ryusei Nakao as well) trying to eliminate a Saiyan, getting beaten by a Super Saiyan, and then being revived as a cyborg/robot...Just like Freeza. Need I go on? OH WAIT!!! I must mention Movie 9. That one might as well have been Toei laughing in our faces. They didn't even try to hide the fact that they were ripping off the Cell Games.

This is why I'm not excited about the new Movie. Sure, I'm happy that DragonBall is getting something new and I'm looking forward to watching it. But if it just winds up being the same old thing, is there really anything to be excited about? How many times can I watch "The Z-Fighters are camping. Ohz noez, here comes a bad guy. Z-Fighters get their asses kicked for 35 minutes. ZOMGz SUPER MEGA AWESOME ATTACK!!! Z-Fighters win!"

Even Episode of Bardock was no different. Sure, the fact that we had Bardock becoming a Super Saiyan was interesting, but Ooishi provided us with nothing new. Anyone who watched the Freeza Saga could tell exactly how it would play out from the beginning. I'm just tired of DragonBall not being taken seriously and the higher ups at Shueisha and Toei thinking that they can just put DragonBall on coast and constantly rehash everything. DragonBall Kai's failure is proof that that mechanic isn't working anymore.

Hopefully I'm wrong and I'll wind up being pleasantly surprised. But I'm not going to get my hopes up this time and wind up being let down again.

Oh friggin frick!

I was so excited for a Dragon Ball film and in the end it's a Dragon Ball Z film, so what it's going to cover the whole DBZ series?

I'd like to see a manga-2-anime version of Buu's arc.

Another update in the ANN article:
In a comment printed alongside the announcement, Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama notes that the adaptation will mark the first time he has been so deeply involved in the production of an anime, in this case as early as the screenwriting stages. Toriyama also says that the film will retain the atmosphere of the original while adding small amounts of "modern flavor."
Hear that? That's the sound of Toei dropping a ton of money on Toriyama's front porch.

I really hope this film releases in theaters in the west for a limited release like a lot of anime movies, it'll be awesome to see the Z-fighters kick ass on the big screen.

Akira Toriyama was quoted as saying, "Well, I wanted a new car."

Kenji Yamamoto was quoted saying, "PLEASE TAKE ME BACK! A BLOO BLOO BLOO!"

This just in, a quote from Masako Nozawa. "I play every character in this film, even the ones I don't."

No word from Chris Sabat, as he is currently foaming at the mouth.

Film at eleven.

He doesn't want to kill anyone, or even prove that he can win... he just wants to know he can. He's an ineffably charming bastard who's manly leanings were really incendental, and yes, the fact that he was voiced by a squeaky woman made the combination perhaps all the more charming.

Fuck yeah. It seems to be set after Boo arc, since the image has Ultimate Gohan on it. And Piccolo & Kuririn return on the big screen!
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Slightly disappointed scarface, the three-eyed one, and the Chinese vampire aren't up there. Who is going to destroy the rocks? But Kuririn is up there with his old uniform. Aw yeah.
