Shameless self promotion! I did this a couple of weeks back. It's from the back of book 15(Viz) and thought it was cute.
...Wait what are you doing? Are you still reading this? I finished what I had to say, why don't you move on to the next post?

Hey guys!! I dunno if you remember my Goku SSj redraw I did awhile back.
I thought it was fun to do, so my other favorite transformation is the Gohan SSj2, when against Cell.
So here's the redraw I did, and below it the original screenshot from the show.

My terrible looking, obligatory Lemmy fanart.
After this I'm going to be focusing all my attention to life drawing and spending most of my draw time studying the human anatomy. Feel free to rip me a new one with criticism on these doodles.

However I do like how I made his...er..sock things! (?)

Also, do you guys find yourselves drawing crooked a lot? Is there any tips to help prevent it? I try to just center it after I upload it.

Hey man that's not bad. You got to start somewhere, and the key is practice practice practice. Also what do you mean crooked? like shaky lines or just not on the center of the page?

Thank you!
And by crooked I mean how my characters tend to lean to the side when I draw them. Even when I try to keep them vertically straight (when they're standing still that is), I always end up drawing them all crooked. lol So yeah, they're not centered to the page all to good.

Re: Fan Works Explosion
Silly questions but they might not even be things you are aware of: Do you tilt your head when you draw? Or do you lean in too close? They could have an effect on your art without you realizing. A tip my Grandpa taught me is to rest your hand sideways on the page so that your thumb is pointing up towards the sky; tilt your head down till your nose touches your thumb, and that should be as close as you should get to the page(if you need a visualization I'll try and help). Other then that, my tips for you would be to get a ruler and draw really(like really) light horizontal lines across the page to establish where the background is, where the foreground is, and so on. Use them as guides for where your character(s) are going to be standing and I think that might help to keep them straight. It might also help with proportions too! When your finished you can go back and erase them. Also, check to see if there are any composition tutorials online. You'll learn some cool things about perspective that could come in handy as your skills progress.Insertclevername wrote:Thank you!![]()

Re: Fan Works Explosion
This is great advice. I was just about to write the same. It does sound like your head is probably to close to the paper when you draw. If so, try to move your head away from it every so often. And like SparkyPantsMcGee suggested, use a ruler and draw a straight line on the page and use it as a guide to keep your character standing straight. Of course if your character is doing something different besides standing still, like bending or flying, draw a line of which direction you want the body to be posed. And used that as your guide as well. This is often called "line of action".SparkyPantsMcGee wrote:Silly questions but they might not even be things you are aware of: Do you tilt your head when you draw? Or do you lean in too close? Man, I wish I could draw. But I haven't been drawing in years and I don't feel like getting back into it, especially now that I'm focusing on writing.

To build on what Scarz said about drawing figures, the simple way I usually explain it to others is that for drawing people (or anything, really), you'll want to start by laying out the basic shapes and arrangements first, THEN add the details.
Don't start by just drawing a head, and then trying to draw an entire neck and then the rest of the body attached to it. Start by using an oval for a head, then lines for the spine, circles for the ribcage and pelvis, lines for the arms and legs, and so forth. Use these simple shapes that you can easily sketch out quickly and easily, and don't be afraid to get sloppy and repeatedly erase them and start over until the arrangement and proportions look right. Especially when it comes to Dragon Ball; the way Toriyama draws things, his characters can have some very different proportions (big foreheads, short torsos, long legs, etc) compared to most other action-hero artists, Eastern or Western.
Then once you've got that basic structure down, start adding onto it with more basic shapes for things like muscles, clothing, facial features, and so forth, and eventually get everything together and cleaned up for the final product.
In a nutshell, imagine that you're building the character's actual body from the inside-out, and so begin with the skeleton.
Start out with something like this:

...Once you're satisfied with the pose and proportions, add "meat" to it like this:

...And then finally work from there to add the specific details to get something like this:

So... yeah, that's the basics, expressed in a longer post than I intended. But another thing that I stress along with it is, at the same time, to not underestimate the value of tracing and copying. They can be very helpful by helping you to learn what those details are and where they go, and even how the characters' anatomy is put together. But don't become over-reliant on them at the expense of learning how to draw things yourself from the ground up.

Re: Fan Works Explosion
You guys are awesome! Thank you so much for the detailed feed back, all three of you!
@SparkyPantsMcGee
I used the method you were saying and now my character is actually standing normally now! Also I found your tip on the horizontal line to be very useful for setting up a platform for the drawing.
@Scarz
That line of action technique will come in handy when I feel confident enough to do some more choreographed "drawings" in the future. Tomorrow I'll see If I can maybe use it to draw a fusion dance pose (when the fingers meet), and upload it here to see how I did!
@Kaboom
I followed your diagram extensively in my latest sketch (which I'll upload tomorrow) and I managed to pull off a nice looking Teen Goten in the same pose thanks to you!
Finally, I'm considering buying some things at my art store for drawing and what not, so do guys have any suggestions on what I should pick up for a beginner like me? So far all I've been working with is regular #2 pencil and a Canson Sketch book from my school. Also, what should I get in terms of outlining and coloring?
Again, much thanks for your tips!
