Watch Dub w/ Subtitles On?

(Has anybody ever)... watched the FUNimation dub but with the subtitles on?

I'm doing it right now. It's really interesting. You get to see what dialogue and jokes they took out, them adding in dialogue when there was none (like in a shot where you don't see the character talking) and just how things are completely different.

It's pretty cool... or at least cool for a geek like me.

One thing I don't like about the subtitles is that there is some spelling and grammar mistakes. Not only that but they use some improper English that seems like it's coming out of the southern states (no offence). But that's kinda getting off topic on my own topic on the first post. LOL.

Yea, probley 75% of the time I watch the dub I do that. Those aren't mistakes in the subtitles, thats how some of the characters talk. When there written like that you get more of an idea of how they are talking if you don't know Japanese. Goku pretty much talks like a hick in the Japanese version.

I think I only did that when me and my cousin (who was strangly willing to watch it, even though he's despised the show for quite some time) watched my old pioneer movie one DVD I found for $5 at EB Games. It was funny how off they were sometimes.

One example is when Majin Vegeta kills the first lot of people in the audience, while the debri is flying across in the dub he says something(I don't recall what, I think it was something like 'it feels good'), in the original Vegeta doesn't speak at this bit, it's right before he does that evil grin where he shows his teeth.

Another thing I noticed while watching the Japanese version is that characters sometimes move their mouths so rapidly it loks like something has messed up with the sound, it's mainly when they are in shock, like when Tenshinhan is shocked at Super Vegeta's strength, he's mouth moves about 10 times and it doesn't look like he is speaking what he's saying, it's hard to explain if you have no clue what I mean, someone help me out here, I can't explain things sometimes...

I understand what you mean Bejiita. That is often a problem with Japanese animation. Lots of people think that things work the same in Japan as here. That the dialogue is recorded first and then the animation is done afterwards so that the mouth movements match. It's the opposite in Japan. The animation is done first, so often you'll see the mouth flaps aren't in synch.

I actually thought that it was purposely done like that because the person is in shock, like when you're scared to say something and your mouth opens but nothing comes out. That was just what I thought though.

Nope. That's often why lines are different in dubs than they are in subtitled anime. People don't really want the Speed Racer effect.

Actually, I've only done this once, noticing that the word 'Pissed' was uttered in A Hero's Legacy. The first time I ever heard a FUNi dub cuss, so I put on the subs to see if I'd just miss heard 'ticked'.

Dende said "Don't piss off the god of Love!" in Season 3 and many of the movies, as well of as the UUE, have included various swearwords.

It's not new with the movies and UUE having swears, but that's because they have uncut versions. The fact that Dende's line even SLIPPED into the cut version, especially airing on Cartoon Network, is the biggest shocker of them all. o_O

Yes, almost two years ago when I bought my first DBZ DVD's (Movies 7 and 8, and later 4-7) I ended up switching on the Jp subtitles just to scope out the difference.

It wasn't long before I was addicted to the Japanese version. Audio, Subtitles, and all. This later turned into a Manga addiction.

Man. I hate it when people trail off in their topic titles. I can't get anything out of what the topic is by reading it, so I click it, am not interested, then come back later and click it again because I can't tell or remember what the hell it's about.
I see a hell of a lot of it at Gamefaqs and it's annoying to me.

I used to have a habit for using subtitles for anything I watched. One day, I rented a Dragon Ball GT DVD, and used the subtitles. When I realized they had different dialogue, I meant to turn it off. You see, I had a PS2 which I use for my DVDs, and the subtitles button is L3. However, I pushed R3, which was the language selecter......



But no. I never watch subtitles with the dub now (I know better now!)

I did watch a funimation dbz dub movie with subtitles once. It was DragonBall Z movie # 8: Broly the Legendary Super Saiyan(Moetsukiro!! Nessen • Ressen • Chô-Gekisena). It was actually interesting to watch what the characters were really saying. Like when Gohan is shocked when Broli destroys the little alien guys' planet. In the dub he says, " He's a monster", but in the original japanese he says; "He's a devil". I ended up watching the whole movie with the japanese subtitles on. I don't watch it like that anymore, but I do sometimes. I use to watch the movies only in English, but then I wanted to hear it in japanese. I now watch all DBZ movies in Japanese. I just like how the characters sound, especially Gokuu.

It is a very amusing practice to watch English Audio with entirely different English Subtitles but I've always wondered if the subtitles themselves were correct enough to contradict fully the English Audio.

In Dragonballs case, it may be so. But for other anime I can't help but shake the feeling that without full Japanese knoledge I can't be completely certain. Kind of like those fan-subs that surfaced in the early 90's that used excessive swearing to appeal to an older audience.

I remember watching the movie #8 dub for the benefit of my sisters, and putting the subtitles on. I seem to recall that there are a lot of places where the original version has no voice-over, which was all filled up in the dub. That's a normal occurrence, but they did it a lot in that movie.
