Without the Cells of Freeza and King Cold he would probably look human.
HUMAN?! Wouldn't he be a cross between a Saiyan and a Namek?

Not really. He absorbed some humans, like Tenshinhan (and others? I can't remember). Saiyans are also dead ringers for humans. Considering that he only had the cells of one Namek, the ratio of human-like to Namek cells is vastly tipped in favour of the former.

Not Tenshinhan. Taiyoken is easy to use so it was probably a technique of Goku. I don't think absorbing energy from people is the same as being cloned from them. Since Cell is made up of only Saiyans, Nameks and Freeza+King Cold, I think he'd be a cross between Saiyan+Namek, though I agree that Saiyans + Humans are fraggin' similar.

Namek, singular, rather than Saiyans, plural.

And didn't he take some of Tenshinhan's cells at the tornament?

The Cell games? That HAS to be anime only.

No, the Ten Bud where young Goku fought Tenshinhan. The one that Gero's probe ladybird thing was apparently watching.

Oh. That's also anime-only then. Manga was Piccolo, Goku and Vegeta when they fought Vegeta on Earth, and Freeza+King Cold when they were killed by Trunks. Cell said he WANTED some of Trunks but that he already had too many Saiyan cells. No mention of any human anywhere.

I think that's just filler, plus I don't know if it showed the bug actually taking any cells from Tenshinhan, did it?

Ahh, sorry. I was getting the "bug studying Goku's techniques" flashback confused with the "cells gathered from various people" flashback. My bad.

I always assumed that they had the Saiyan recovery trait with them the entire series, but as they used it, the effect dramatically decreased. For somebody like Cell, who hadn't been under its effect much, it was still potent.

I tend to agree with the theory that it was kind of "forgotten" by Toriyama, which certainly wouldn't be a first! :?

I too would have gone with the "he forgot it after the Freeza saga" theory, except that Toriyama goes and buggers that up by using it with Cell. So I'll agree with MaCChaos' idea that the effect becomes less noticable each time it is used, so it wasn't overly effective for the Z fighters during the Cell saga, but it was for Cell.

(I can certainly see Vegeta almost killing himself training several times while trying to become a Super Saiyan.)
