Is there an "Uncut" Pioneer VHS of episodes 1-3?

Discussion regarding the entirety of the franchise in a general (meta) sense, including such aspects as: production, trends, merchandise, fan culture, and more.

Is there an "Uncut" Pioneer VHS of episodes 1-3?

Post by eledoremassis02 » Tue Sep 04, 2012 9:44 pm

Browsing online I found this cover

Image

It has "killed" and such on the back. What else I noticed is that it say "5 and older" instead of the later "3 and up". Does this copy have the versions where they say "kill" and "die"?

Seems like in mid production, they changed their market. Probably some higher-ups thought it would be easier to sell to a younger audience than a slightly (and do I mean slightly) older audience. It's all about the merchandise.

Good find.

That is true.

Whats even crazier is that it has a cover I have never seen!

It looks very familiar to one of the Arrival covers in terms of colour scheme. Who knows, maybe it is a bootleg or something

It's not a bootleg. I've seen this before. I guess after this, they decided to switch to the paper cases which make an image when you line them all up. As for the contents of the tape itself, I don't know.

Hmm, I thought the same thing. But I remember there was also this clam shell art

I wondering if this was a "test audience" tape. My mom got one for Pokemon (because the show caused seizures in Japan).

I brought this up a few times after noticing there was a "youth" version and an "action" version...

I'm pretty sure I came to the conclusion that they were both exactly the same VHS, just with two different covers.

You know what's ironic I was actually looking for this very pic earlier so I could bring this topic up in this thread but now it looks like I no longer have to, as for any actual differences between the actual contents of both tapes that's questionable, I plan to buy both versions (if the action version ever appears) and compare them to see if there are any differences because I find it strange that FUNimation would have the same exact thing under 2 different labels.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

I've seen both of those "Arrival" covers a long time ago at a Blockbuster.
On hiatus.

Well the one guy who posted here ( http://www.kanzenshuu.com/forum/viewtop ... 1&start=40 ) has a copy of that version.
And I find it fun that eledoremassis02 even commented on his pic.

Lol, the version he has is the "Youth" version that most people have. The "Action" version has just Gohan on the spine.

There's an uncut version of the Ocean Dub DBZ episodes? I'd love to see them!

Well, they're uncut in the sense that they are the original broadcast episodes. They are still edited but they say "death" "die" and such.

Well, not quite. The reason the title of this thread has "uncut" in quotation marks is because he doesn't mean truly uncut. You see, for the first run of the Ocean dub, in the first three episodes there were a few references to death and killing. The "uncut" episodes are identical to the edited episodes with the sole exception of the references to death and killing. However...for unknown reasons, FUNimation went back very early on and re-dubbed those episodes to remove any mention of death or killing.

So...not really uncut. Just kinda. Apparently those "uncut" episodes only aired once, and the only remaining evidence that they even existed are VHS TV recordings that some fans held on to. Or so we thought, anyway. The reason eledoremassis02 made this thread is because apparently he discovered that these "uncut" episodes were, in fact, actually sold in stores at one point.

Now that I'm thinkin' about it, I don't remember what podcast episode it was, but I believe Mike was nice enough to post audio clips comparing the "uncut" lines and the revised/edited lines.
A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Pretty much. That being said, another tip-off that came much later was that "World of Dragon Ball Z" mini-recap-special that FUNimation put together for the Trunks DVDs (was it also on VHS?). In at least one of the clips, the dialog from the original broadcast was used instead of the re-recorded version (Roshi's "I smell death in the air!").

Near as we can tell, like Tanooki mentioned, despite the different cover art images and listings from Pioneer DVDs at the time, the "Youth" and "Action" versions were identical with the re-recorded dialog.

BOOM -- Podcast Episode #0066. Be kind... it's from before I purchased a real mixer.

I hope that's not the case (though I wouldn't doubt it)...we won't truly know until someone buys one. We must keep an eye out for a copy :D

Interesting. I thought I saw DVD episode's of the uncut. Hell, this goes back to the thread I made awhile ago.

This also corroborates with the interview on DBZ uncut (I think that's what it was called). Yes, FUNimation was planning on making "uncut" DBZ episodes with the ocean cast so long ago.
