What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?
Re: What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?
I don't think 'Curse of the Blood Rubies' has been released in AUS/NZ Uncut. This box set only cost me $NZ15 so I snagged it when I saw it. I'll get the other movie at some stage.. I'll probably have to buy the box set from the US to get though I guess.

Re: What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?
I've been very nostalgic for the original version of FUNimation's in-house dub, old voices and Faulconer included, and the season sets just weren't cutting it for me, so I ordered the two Ginyu DVDs. In the same manner, I've also become incredibly nostalgic for the Ocean cast episodes, so I ordered "Betrayal", which contains the first episode of Dragon Ball Z I remember seeing.
I'll probably end up getting all of the single DVDs down the road, because my nostalgia is running pretty high right now. I still love the Dragon Boxes for their excellent footage and presentation of the Japanese version, but I want to watch the show exactly as I did 14 years ago. I really should have went this path instead of the season sets back in the day, but I was going through a stupid phase then. I wanted the dub to have the Japanese music, because I knew in my heart that the dub was of subpar quality at best, but I was kidding myself into believing that the dub was made better with the original score. I wanted a better DBZ dub back then, and to me, that was justification to defend what I was feeling nostalgic for then, but blindly put on a pedestal that I knew it was not deserving of.
With Kai, I finally (mostly, due to cancellation) got the better dub I had wanted, but even shortly before I had begun bashing the original FUNimation dub, due to "converting" to a fan of the Japanese version. This is part of the stupid phase I was talking about. I was picking "sides" to be on within the community, but when I was a kid, I liked both the dub and the Japanese version for different reasons. A year ago or so I finally realized this, and started accepting the FUNimation Z dub for what it was: a campy, unprofessional dub that I watched religiously when I was a kid. I then began watching a few "broadcast dub" episodes on my season sets, and the nostalgia started flowing. I finally accepted that I actually love the original dub for shear nostalgia (that, and I always like to have a laugh at FUNimation's "season 3" acting).
I was also frequently putting down the Ocean cast dub at the same time as my other phase, but the real reason for that was that I didn't like censorship, and I was taking the dubs too seriously, so the cheesy dialog was off-putting to me. After I accepted my nostalgia, I've been wanting to see it since. It's been way too many years, and I have so many memories of watching those episodes, taping them all, and watching every rerun. I've only seen a few clips of this dub on YouTube, so most of it will be more "fresh" to me, as well as incredibly nostalgic.
I'm going to also get a DVD book/wallet to store all of the discs in so that they won't take up so much space. I have a very small bedroom, and I need all of the space I can get. It's also going to be a rather slow process getting them all, due to the sheer number of DVDs available. I suppose I'll try searching for lots on eBay. I'll also definitely sell off my season sets to help me purchase a few extra DVDs (although, I'm still contemplating 1 and 2, since I have a few distinct memories of the UUE dub, but maybe the dub with Japanese music on the Dragon Boxes can take it's place?).
This is definitely something I'm looking forward to.

There is fun with the old in house FUNi dub (that's why I got the singles and wouldn't sell them if I had all the dragon boxes). Ocean never bothered me. Some of the censoring was comical (poorly done dust clouds). But I feel it was one of the better dubs. I wish you luck and sometimes you can get lucky on ebayMetalwario64 wrote:I've been very nostalgic for the original version of FUNimation's in-house dub, old voices and Faulconer included, and the season sets just weren't cutting it for me, so I ordered the two Ginyu DVDs. Re: What's your most recent Dragonball purchase?
Metalwario64, I really appreciate and kinda admire your outlook on the different versions of the show. For folks like me that were already college-age and older when the in-house stuff went down, it wasn't just a show we were watching -- it was this weird infestation into our world and our hobby. We didn't have that childhood infatuation with no preconceptions, which I admittedly only had just a short four years earlier! It sure didn't take long for the jadedness to pop in.
You're literally what I'm talking about so often on the podcast with folks who just watched it as a show. I often compare it to my love of the 90s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles cartoon -- I know it's not accurate to the comics, but it was the version I was exposed to first, and the one I probably "like" the most. I acknowledge the other versions, and I know that if I'm going to have a serious conversation about the characters, Sarcastic!Raphel is not the same as Moody!Raphael. It's not the best comparison, but it's the best I have, and I think it's where you're coming from
. You've taken a lot of steps back and really thought about the way you enjoy the franchise. That's awesome.
Anyway...
Most recent thing I've gotten in is just the JP Gamecube version of Dragon Ball Z (the first Budokai), as described on the most recent podcast. The instruction manual's cover is amazing!

Thanks. I really feel like since "I've come to terms", so to speak, with the dubs, that I've been quite a deal happier with my fandom. I'm still more of a fan of the Japanese version due to its excellent quality as a show, and I even still have plenty of nostalgia for it as well. I watched both versions (though the dub more so as a kid due to availability), but I loved both of them as a kid, whereas when I joined this forum back in '08, I was picking "sides". It's as if I took a step back in maturity in that way.VegettoEX wrote:Metalwario64, I really appreciate and kinda admire your outlook on the different versions of the show. Getting past all of that nonsense, and enjoying both versions (or "all" if you count the Saban era episodes as separate) for their own reasons is what makes me the happiest.
I've been collecting the old video game cartoons from my childhood lately, such as the Super Mario Bros. cartoons, Captain N and the Sonic series. While some have stood the test of time better than others, I watch them mostly for nostalgia. I consider my feelings toward the English dubs of Dragon Ball Z to be in much the same vein as those. You're pretty close in saying that it's similar to your feelings toward the 90's TMNT cartoon, although, I do still like the Japanese version more overall due to my tastes developing, but honestly, they both have special places in my heart, because I have a few memories of the Japanese version as well.
But you're right in that my enjoyment of the dubs comes from seeing it first as a kid, because otherwise the nostalgia wouldn't be there, and I'd have ended up in the same boat as you, had I even become a fan of the series at all.
The great thing about all of this is that because I loved them both back in the day when I was a kid, that makes me watching both the Japanese version and the dubs alongside each other even more nostalgic.

I loved that image on the booklet. I bought this years ago when PlayAsia was selling it cheap. I don't know what happened to it. But hey, some of the art is used on the official website.

How many different versions of that group shot are there? I can think of the original from the final manga page, but isn't there GT version for one of the endings as well?

Got my Toyble's Dragon Ball AF 1/4 and Dragon Ball ZERO in the mail today (For those who don't know they are doujinshis)

The size is the same as the Kanzenbans, which it's pretty cool

In the tome 3 you can see this funny tribute to Blue Dragon, I loved it:

What I don't like is that the numbers and the "DBAF" title, don't fit it all when you put them together
