Yeah. Personally, I've never even considered Super Perfect Cell a zenkai of any description, but merely him transforming into his version of SSJ2. It just makes far more sense, especially considering his return to his Perfect Form appearance.

Isn't it explicitly stated that Cell's powerup is due to his Saiyan genes? And explicitly a near-death powerup?

Cell claims it's because his Saiyan cells have increased his power, yeah, but he never recieved one prior to that point and there's no reason a zenkai would return him to his Perfect Form appearance or give him a new aura. Maybe he did get a bit of a zenkai and the upsurge in power is what triggered the transformation, like Gohan's upsurge from his anger did. But a zenkai alone makes no sense.

Well, Zenkais tend to come only when Toriyama wants them to.

Honestly, it makes less sense to me to assume that Cell simply has his own forms of Super Saiyan, when he's never really had any sort of "kick", and lacks the cells of Goten or Trunks.

What do Goten and Trunks have to do with it? He's already got Goku and Vegeta, and he's already got the SSJ aura, then the SSJ2 aura when he reaches Super Perfect. I think it's pretty clear he's got the SSJ forms, or some varriant there-of. Makes far more sense than anything else.

I don't think Bojack is any stronger then he was in Movie 9? Cell has regeneration as well, so I think Cell is going to win this 9/10.
