Because, DragonBall Z was edited to be suitable for 3 year olds. Shows like Batman were aimed for kids a little older (7 - 12?).
Seriously?! That young?
Yup!

Those dubs didn't actually censor death at all. Voltron did but Robotech retained death and even said "death" and other synonymous words. Star Blazers kept death but not so much said anything about.

True, but they did censor some the violence and other aspects of the show which I was referring to as censorship in general. "By comparison, the U.S. (seemingly) "takes risks" with a show that tackles the animated taboo of death, violence, or what have you."

Robotech not so much, but that did have the no butts no guts moto, so they did tone down somewhat on the violence. However, Starblazers did try to pass off Conroy's brother off as him in the U.S. Also, the whole name change of the Yamato to Argo because of the backstory behind it (which is understandable to some degree).

Also Starblazers, like Voltron pointed out a lot of those "deaths" as robots, drones, or remote controlled vehicles. Although I can't blame the U.S. for the BS with Season 3 and Avatar though.

Still, though, even as a youngster, it was pretty obvious to me when characters died. If anything, they made it more apparent with some of their edits, when they had Piccolo’s body disappear along with Kami.
I actually kinda liked that edit, oddly enough. In a way it almost makes more sense, 'ya know? Kami disappeared, why wouldn't Piccolo? They either should have both disappeared, or Kami should have just suddenly fallen to the ground and died. Granted, this edit was done for the wrong reason, but I actually think it makes more sense.
Well, presumably the reason that Kami's body disappeared is because, as a god, he'd automatically get to keep his body in the afterlife, when we're later told that it was Kami who restored Piccolo and co.'s bodies in the afterlife.

True but it kept in death and other elements that would've normally have been taken out. It wasn't UNcensored. But it didn't do too much censorship.

It seem like in the early and mid 90's that they feel like they couldn't add guns or say die in most shows since I remember they took out the Punisher's guns in the 90's Spider-Man cartoon series. It seem by the late 90's and early 00's that they stop caring that much.

Amazing how simple-minded and shortsighted censorship can be.

You know, sometimes I wonder what it could have been like if Pioneer had been the ones to buy and dub the ENTIRE series instead of just the first three Z movies. No "next dimension", no extreme censorship, no name changes, no replacement score, no added sound effects, just a faithful adaptation with appropriate voices with awesome acting behind said voices.

It's fun to dream.

Speaking of which, a few times before I heard a rumor that Pioneer (or FUNimation) was planning to do an uncut redub of the first 67 episodes before the FUNi / Ocean / Pioneer partnership fell apart, can anyone confirm or deny that rumor?

I just finished watching the Ocean dub of 1-53, they had to of said next dimension so many times. It can't be as bad as the GT game where Vegeta or Cell says, I will send you to Heaven.

The Pioneer movies had custom sound effects too. Loads and loads of them.

I never realized how much until I listened to the Japanese audio (which sounds too quiet lol). Which FUNi redub release messed up and put the sound effects on the Japanese track?

That would be the Ultimate Uncut release of movie 1. However, it's only the sound effect when Gohan passes out at the end, and it actually uses the audio from the Pioneer dub for that scene. I'd have to imagine it was due to the audio source for that scene being damaged in FUNimation's elements, as the Japanese track in the Double Feature DVD has the original audio intact, but there are lots of loud static and tearing sounds during that scene.

Interestingly, their in house movie 2 dub with Japanese audio track on the Double Features has all of the added sound effects from the Pioneer dub.

Oh wow thats interesting! thank you!

Also, I found this funny (from an interview with Peter Kalamis)

Q:What do you think of all the censoring and editing done in the English version? How do you feel about the fact that you have to say "next dimension" instead of "die"? Do you think the alterations are warranted, or do the censors go too far?

A:I think what is considered taboo in the Japanese culture and what is taboo in North America are two completly different sets of rules. Yes, the censorship is necessary. I have seen footage of Goku's bare ass, penises, and all sorts of things that you would obviously not see on North American television. As for saying "next dimension" instead of "die" I don't think that would really bother anyone. Bare asses, yes. Next dimension, no.

TheBlackPaladin wrote:Y'know, strangely enough, it didn't bother me as a kid because I mentally registered "next dimension" as just a cooler way of saying "death." Whenever I heard a line like, "I'm going to send you to the next dimension," I didn't think anything of it and just thought to myself, "Oh, he's going to kill them." So as a young fan, I never had a huge problem with it and figured that the next dimension meant death. Even when I was discussing DBZ with my friends at school as a kid, we didn't talk about anybody "being sent to the next dimension," even my friends registered that to mean death. For example, when talking about Piccolo "being sent to the next dimension," we never used that phrase...we would always just say, "Nappa killed Piccolo when he tried to save Gohan."
I'm part of the older crowd that got into DBZ through the dub and, originally, I didn't really think too much of lines regarding "next dimensions," "cargo robots," and "abandoned cities." The reason was because I didn't realize that such things were a part of the original version. I was just like, "Oh, it's a kids' show. They're gonna do this sort of thing."

It wasn't until after I discovered DBZ Uncensored that I knew I was even missing out on anything and that's when I started having a problem with dub censorship. That's why it was a big deal when Toonami started airing DBZ with most of the blood intact.
