Can I not play Butouden games on a US SNES?

Post by okpank » Thu Oct 04, 2012 12:47 pm

Some reason I can't find out anything about this. I have the second, smaller version of the US SNES with both stoppers broken off. I can play Hyper Dimension just fine, but none of the Butouden games.

Just go buy yourself a Super Famicom.

Saying "just go get such-and-such" when he should theoretically have a perfectly fine device already isn't very helpful.

I haven't heard anything about this before. What exactly happens when you toss one of the Super Butōden games in? Does it just stay black? Ever hit the title screen? Of all the games, I would expect Hyper Dimension to be the one that doesn't work properly, if only because of the SA-1 chip -- not that it should cause any problems, but it's at least SOMETHING different from standard games.

Anyone else with other-region or later-model systems run into similar problems? What did you do to troubleshoot it? Unfortunately, my familiarity is with the original model Super NES, so I can't help from experience beyond that...!

You could buy a Universal Adapter for your US SNES.

There's a similar adapter for NES which I have like 9 all boxed up (one plus but it's just the cartridge itself). Not gonna throw them away so it'll just stay stored somewhere.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:
- Kai 2.0 on Blu-ray

Thing is, I'm not convinced that would make a difference. If there are no tabs in the way preventing the cartridge from fitting, there shouldn't be any issues any which way. It's the same hardware, with no software restrictions that I'm aware of -- the only "lockout" was the physical restriction from the prior hardware. If the games don't load plugged straight in, I'm not sure that a passthrough adapter like that would make any difference. Might be worth it to check, though.

Because said "such and such" is the correct console to play Super Famicom discs. If he has a modified SNES or an adapter then fine. But he wasn't exactly being clear on what he was attempting to do and what he had to work with. To me it just makes sense to play Famicom games on well...a Famicom rather than attempting to modify your SNES.

I thought it was perfectly clear what he's trying to do. He has the Super Butōden games and Hyper Dimension, all four of which are Super Famicom games. He has the revised-model of the SNES which accepts the JP cartridges with no problem due to lacking the tabs that blocked the JP cartridges on the original US system. Hyper Dimension plays fine. The other three do not.

I was using my HDTV, and I'm pretty sure all I got was a black screen for the three games.

My system and games are over at a friends, so I asked him to try them out on his old tube TV. He got back to me and said they work just fine, with the exception of Butoden 2 being the only one having the black screen problem.

Perhaps the carts need cleaning, try applying a conservative amount of rubbing alcohol onto connecters. Here's a useful (and entertaining) video.

Yes, this. Do most of your other games work on it? Maybe it's just dying on you and not reading games as well anymore.

I can play Butouden 1 and 2 as well as Hyper Dimension just fine on my SNES as well as my handheld SNES clone. So long as the tabs are removed on the Super NES there shouldn't be a problem.
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!
