The second one you've linked in the original pressing of the "Season One" set from back in 2010. This had the Kenji Yamamoto broadcast score, and was the only "season" release of Kai from FUNimation before they re-started it (obviously including the Kikuchi replacement score).

I'd be wary of ordering it and just assuming you're guaranteed the Yamamoto score. While it does technically have a different catalog number than the re-release version, and while the business on hand to sell it to you is even being fulfilled by Amazon, there's a chance things could get swapped around and it could be the replacement version.

That all being said, there's no "definitive" version. It's all a matter of which musical score you want. You're only going to ever get the first four "Part" releases with Yamamoto, and there was only one "season" ever released with Yamamoto -- all of them have been discontinued.

Actually, it looks like the second one is the original "Part One" (not Season One), so it only has the first 13 episodes, whereas the "Season One" has the first 26 episodes.

Huh. Well I totally misread THAT one!

Welp, the follow-up stands! One will get you 26 episodes with Kikuchi, and the other will get you 13 episodes with Yamamoto :).

The definitive version, for me, it's Parts One to Four on Blu-ray as they contain the original Dragon Ball Kai and it's the best part of the entire series, also, the picture quality is marvellous.

After Friеza's arc Kai dropped a lot of quality in my opinion, I really didn't enjoy it as much as I did with Saiyan to Friеza's arc, I guess part of why I didn't like it was due to missing the original music, picture quality wasn't very good and the ending.

I did bought Parts Five to Eight but I'm just going to sell them (separately on Amazon.co.uk). I'd been happy if Toei decided to end Kai by Friеza's arc instead of Cell's arc.
FUNimation 2015 Releases I want:

Is it really that noticeable of drop in picture quality...?

I personally didn't like the dirt on the episodes.

This is an example: http://images3.static-bluray.com/review ... _large.jpg

There was more of these white dots and whiteness on other episodes. For a series remastered in 2009 in HD, it really leaves a lot to desire.

I realy agree with you on this. My girlfriend and I have been watching Kai in order (except the first 53 eps we watched the Ocean dub because I have 1 and 2 of Kai on bluray, which I don't have one at the moment) and noticed a really quality drop when Trunks arrives. It's a shame, I wish the footage could look as good as when Goku was fighting Ginyu. IMO that is when Kai looked it's best.

I also agree with you on the definitive music change as well. To me it's like the music was changed in the Trunks saga onward to fit with the tone, before I get attacked for saying that, yes I know that's why the music was not changed. Though I really do miss Yamamoto's score, because it made the show feel fresh and new.

To be fair, there was actually a pretty significant shift in the musical score over in the original Yamamoto broadcast version when Trunks shows up, too -- it's just that said music never made its way to home video in North America (although it did air on TV for a while in a dubbed version). There were finally a whole slew of new pieces introduced around that time.

Yeah I remember that. When we had Nicktoons they would air those episodes. Sometime's they will air them with the replacement score, then with the new score. It was on and off, I think they stopped using the Yamamoto score after the Android 19 fight.

Yeah Yamamoto does add a whole new slate of musical pieces for the Android/Cell arc. I think they are even better than the Saiyan-Freeza scores [he still ads some scores from those too into the Cell saga] and they are much more suiting for Kai than Kichuke's scores.
