DragonBall Z 2 V

The Magic Box has released some images from the upcoming DragonBall Z 2 V expansion disc (remember, DragonBall Z 2 is the Japanese version of Budokai 2; the "V" comes from V-Jump, a Japanese manga magazine a la Shonen Jump).

Anyway, the upgrade looks to have at least Coola (and Metal Coola) as a playable character, plus some of the bonus fusions we got in our version (Yamhan / Tiencha, Gotan / Gokule, Kibitoshin). The screens also seem to confirm a special "V Jump" version of the Tenka-ichi Budôkai ring, as well.

How does an expansion disc work?

Not even sure if it's an actual expansion disc or the game on a completely new disc. It's pretty vague, thus far. If it's an expansion disc, I guess you'd load up one disc, and it asks for the other disc when ready, after it's loaded the necessary things... or something...

Well, if that's the case I guess you'd have to load up the expansion disc first, because the first disc wouldn't know the expansion existed, right? Or were they expecting this expansion all along...?

They wouldn't be able to sell the first one if it's just a brand new disc... It would piss off the buyers of Dragonball Z 2, as well.

The Japanese have absolutely no problem with buying the same thing twice.

Look at the top 20 games, for example. 12 of the top 20 games are re-releases (including remakes) of pre-existing games. I think Shigeru Miyamoto made a joke about a similar thing, once.

Miyamoto says a lot of things. Great guy. How many of those are remakes of games from less than a year back, as opposed to remakes / rereleases of old NES games?

You really love the magic box... maybe I should start using it as my gaming news source. IGN is really pissing me off these days.

Yeah, half of those games are those new Famicom Mini games, which are just old NES games as-is for GBA. Two are the re-made original Pokemon games, as well.

Magic Box r0X0rZ. I'm all about international video game news.

I'm aware of the famicon minis, but this Pokémon stuff is new to me. I'm going to go and play with this site for a while... See ya.

Since those are old games, I stand by my opinion that DBZ2 buyers won't be happy if it's a brand new game. a piracy website.

Look at Final Fantasy X-2, though. It was just recently re-released with an extra disc and such, and it's getting eaten right up :P.

Or Final Fantasy VII: International Edition. It was released barely a year after the original Japanese version, and was identical except for a couple of changes that had been added to the US version (such as two more giant monster-thingies).

I have an idea they've done that with other FF games, too.

In fact, this expansion disc seems to be following that pattern. Game released in Japan. Game released in the US with extra features. Game re-released in Japan with those same extra features.

(Except, wasn't the Japanese version of Budokai 2 released after the US version?)

Quite honestly, adding one slightly changed stage and a new character is more than some Street Fighter updates have done.

Ah, that's not true ^^;;. Every jump in the SF2 had significant changes, even if they didn't feel like it.

What I'm confused about, however, is the inclusion of Yamhan/Tiencha, Gotan/Gokule, and Kibitoshin. The page seems to be plugging these characters as totally new to the Japanese version; perhaps they weren't in the original Japanese release... ? I'm pretty sure they're in the European version, right? One would assume they'd have been in, since the US/EU versions came out long before the original Japanese release.

Also, the page notes "Kuura, Cubit, Gokutan (Goku + Satan) and Potana" as characters.

Kuura = Coola
Cubit = (?)
Gokutan = Gotan / Gokule
Potana = (?)

"Cubit" may be referring to "Kibitoshin," who seems to be pictured in the third-to-last and second-to-last images. "Potana" may have something to do with the Potara earrings, but I'm not sure. Yamhan/Tiencha doesn't seem to have anything relevant to his name in that above list of four characters. Plus, their note about "brand new fighters from the DragonBall Z movies"... it's just speculation, but may there possibly be more than just Coola/Metal Coola.. ?

Thoughts?

Do you know what'd be interesting?

Having (as secret bonus characters, of course) a few other Jump Characters (Luffy, Naruto, Yugi, *shrugs*) in there. I dunno why but I thought that might be nice :)

Eh, I just wasn't a believer in Street Fighter II Turbo I guess, to me it felt like champion edition with very little in the way of balance changes (though the eventual Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo was amazing).

Anyway I guess we can agree to disagree on that topic.

I think you might be on to something with it being more than just Coola, if it is I'm sure we'll know within a week or so.

From the Japanese pages I've seen, they're definitely in the regular Japanese version. So... I don't get it, either. :? Although... despite being up on the latest news, The Magic Box doesn't always get its facts straight (e.g. the name misspellings, bad romanizations, etc.). Do you think maybe they're just misinterpreting the situation?

UPDATE: Some more Japanese pages I've visited seem to all agree that the only characters unique to the V-Jump disc will be Coola and Broli. I still have no idea what names The Magic Box mangled, though. :?

I believe it's merely an upgrade disc. DBZ2 hasn't even been out in Japan for a whole month yet; I doubt they'd sell a reissue this soon.
The Magic Box doesn't always get its facts straight (e.g. the name misspellings, bad romanizations, etc.).
But they still kick ass!

Hopefully, if Funimation/Atari/Shonen Jump is smart, they'll release an upgrade disc for the American version with Kuriza, Cooler, and whatever new stuff is on the V-Disc.

By the way, do you suppose Meta-Cooler is a transformation, a seperate character, or something like Mecha-Frieza was in Budokai 1/2?
Battle High 2, starring Kyle Hebert as well as myself, has been released on Xbox 360, OUYA, PC, Linux, Mac, and Xbox One!

I'd like to see someone really funny in there, like Chopper or Kakashi. 8)

Broli, huh? That'll get the fanboys wetting their pants.

And yeah, The Magic Box doesn't always get their stuff 100% straight, but at the same time, they're not DBZ fans... they're video game fans. I'm sure the romanizations / straight Japanese they're given is completely foreign to them. But yeah... I can't figure out what a couple of those names are supposed to be :P.

Also, yes... I can only assume that Metal Coola will be either an alternate costume for Coola, or something along the lines of Mecha-Freeza (perhaps the Big Gete Star comes down and computerizes him upon defeat :P).

Hey, mabey we could persuade the US Shonen Jump to include the expansion disk as an offer for subscribers?

Sure, assuming they actually make one over here.

Just imagine we get one that has even more features, so the Japanese get one that bests ours, and it goes on until every single place and every single character ever is in there? Heh.
