Favorite English Roshi
Like the title says, who would you guys say was your favorite English voice of Master Roshi? And could we do so without comparing to his Japanese vas too much? Myself, I have to go with Mike McFarland as while he doesn't get the wise part down at times as well as he gets the goofy and pervy sides down, it still stands out and he seems to have enjoyed himself while doing it. Especially when he's at convetions like here. And why do I for some reason have a feeling a lot of the US guys on here, even those who hate the dub (minus those who prefer posterior and whose gaze swings elsewhere) are probably going t say on that clip that he speaks the truth?

Re: Favorite English Roshi
Mike McFarland was good, but I didn't mind the guy who did him for the Ocean dub.
I wipe it off the tile, the light is brighter this time, everything is 3D blasphemy.
My eyes are red and gold, the hair is standing straight up, this is not the way I picture me.
I can't control my shakes, how the hell did I get here? Something about this, so very wrong.
I have to laugh out loud, I wish I didn't like this. Is it a dream or a memory?

Re: Favorite English Roshi
For me it really depends on what mood is supposed to be for certain scenes in the anime, for the more peverted and comedic scenes I'd have to go with Mike McFarland hands down, but for the scenes where Roshi's actually supposed to be serious and be more like a wise hermit I'd have to go with the guy who did Roshi in the Harmony Gold dub, as for Ocean Roshi truth be told, to me his voice never really fit the character at all.
If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out.

Re: Favorite English Roshi
I never liked any English voices of Roshi. He should sound old, kind, and yet strong, but all the English Roshis don't sound enough strong as a martial arts master. The one who did in the Harmony Gold dub is fairly good in terms of forcefulness, but his voice feels a bit too young for an over-300-year-old man.

Re: Favorite English Roshi
I think Mike is probably the best I've heard. He's excellent at portraying the stereotypical perverted side of the hermit, but I kind of agree with you here in regards to the more serious side of Roshi. He does sound a bit forced when he's portraying the "wise old master" side of the character that's more down to earth. To see what I mean, look at the Kai scene when they are talking about the Z-fighters' deaths after Vegeta leaves (during the Saiyan arc) -- the delivery of the "so frustrating" line in particular was kind of strange. And keep in mind that I really liked the Kai dub. To me he's good overall.kei17 wrote:I never liked any English voices of Roshi. I think the first Japanese voice was really good at portraying both sides. But he has the advantage of being fairly old (i.e. having a more "mature" voice) compared to the English VAs. The replacement that came (after the original VA, Miyauchi, unfortunately passed away) sounded weird to me in Path to Power. But that's based on the perspective of somehow who doesn't speak or write Japanese.

Gregory Snegoff. He makes the Turtle Sage sound strong and powerful, like the wise martial arts master he is.

Don't forget Michael Donovan! :p
Though that technically wasn't Ocean, I figured that's the one he meant. I thought it was the best voice from the Canadian actors.

I though it was David Ward who voiced him in the Pioneer Movies?Gonstead wrote: That depends... which of the 4 Ocean/Westwood dub Roshi's do you speak of?

Any-who my order would be:
1. Mike McFarland - An awesome memorable laugh and he's one of the few English Roshi's I can take seriously.
2. Michael Donovan - He didn't get too much of a chance to shine, but I though his overall performance was decent. A little too kooky though.
3. AB Groupe Voice Actor - Wouldn't be too bad if he (and the other AB VAs) didn't talk faster than the English dub of Mach GoGoGo!
4. Ian Corlett / Peter Kelamis - they both sound about the same and I thought they both sounded too character-ish. Penguintruth's Voice Comparison Chart lists them both as sounding like "Old Time Coal Miners" and I'd have to agree.
5. Dave Ward - Sounds like he has dementia and I had a hard time of taking his Roshi seriously in Movie 2.
6. Dean Galloway - Sounds like a has a foot in the grave.
7. Gregory Snegoff - Sounds like Captain America and much too young sounding.
8. Terry Klassen -Sounds like his Kuririn but older and since I've never liked his Kuririn this is a double negative for me.
Re: Favorite English Roshi
^ I honestly have no idea. I jet went with what BehindTheVoiceActors listed him being voiced by.

Mike McFarland, he had that crazy Kame-Sennin voice and laugh.

A "rather haggard" translation of a line from Future Gohan in DBZ, provided to FUNimation by Toei:
"To think of fighting that is this fun...so, it was pleasant fight, as many as, therefore is a feeling which is good the fight where."

Re: Favorite English Roshi
I'd have to go with Mike McFarland as well. It's no Kohei Miyauchi to be sure, but really, none of the English voices are. So just going off of which voice I like best and completely ignoring what the original Japanese sounded like...gotta be McFarland.

Re: Favorite English Roshi
They're all pretty bad. Especially Terry Klassen, who just sounds like Kuririn if he was an old man. Actually, it sounds like Kuririn doing an impression of Roshi.
But if I have to choose a "favorite" English dub Roshi, I guess Mike McFarland. He's got a great laugh. Otherwise, he sounds a bit forced. They all do.

Re: Favorite English Roshi
I'm the only Ian Corlett fan? His delivery was awesome, and he could pull off the wise aspect of the character that McFarlannd never seemed able to capture.
That said, Mike Mcarland is excellent in the role. Especially in Dragonball.
Peter Kelamis was in the role. Whoever did the fist 3 movies was pretty good, but not as good as McFarland or Corlett.
I've never heard Terry Klassen's version, but to me every character he voices sounds like Krillin.
