Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
I'm glad that Kai will finally finish the DBZ storyline. Now I can recommend it without hesitation. Though I have a feeling Toei is going to continue to cheap out with the animation, I hope they at least fix any animation mistakes from the original show, and not keep them in like they have so far (orange gi Kuririn when he should be wearing armor) nor downplay the blood.
The Buu arc is my least favorite of the DB/Z storylines, but it's still part of the story, and there are plenty of elements I like, such as Vegeta and Mr. Satan's character development, Gohan's "mystic" form, Gotenks' weird attacks, Dabura, Videl, and the Goku vs Majin Vegeta fight.
As far as the Japanese cast, I wonder if Aya Hirano will continue to voice Dende into his teenage years. She's been sort of on the outs with anime companies since her sex scandal, but even though she's stunt casting, I like her Dende. I hope Videl's VA returns, despite her being devestated by the loss of Daisuke Gouri.
As for the English version, as long as they keep the script accurate and the actors on the ball, I'm confident it'll be fine. I'm excited to hear Kara Edwards as Videl and Goten again. She was always quite good in those roles. I don't understand the dislike of Kyle Hebert's Gohan in this thread. I enjoy Hebert's Gohan every bit as much as Nozawa's or Swaile's. I especially like his Great Saiyaman delivery. I hope Justin Cook isn't older Dende, though, he's just the wrong voice for that character. Clinkenbeard will probably still be 18 and I'm hoping Laura Bailey is little Trunks. I wouldn't mind new voices for Kaioshin, Dai Kaioshin, and Kibito.
I'm curious as to who will be composing the music. If it's just the old Kikuchi material, I hope they do a better job placing it, but I'd really like to hear some new stuff, if Kikuchi is up to it. Otherwise, they should get somebody new to compose some music for it. Can't think of anyone off the top of my head, but I'll mull it over (like you care). A new OP and ED would be great, too.
It's important to be cautious this early in, though, and not get our hopes up too high, but I can't help but be a little thrilled.

She may not voice them for Kai, unfortunately.penguintruth wrote:I'm excited to hear Kara Edwards as Videl and Goten again. She was always quite good in those roles.
Dont' get me wrong, I loved her in those roles too, and I hope she does voice them again. However, last I heard, she moved, and her roles were taken over in the videogames by Brina Palencia. Of course, if I'm wrong, by all means, somebody call me out. However, there's a chance that Edwards may be replaced...I hope that isn't the case. I loved her takes on Videl and Goten. On the other hand, Palencia is a consistently great actress, so if it came to that, I wouldn't be heartbroken per say.
Kyle Hebert, despite moving to Los Angeles, is a lock for Gohan. I recall that on his Facebook page, someone asked him if he misses being the narrator for Kai, and he said something to the effect of... "I do, but Doc Morgan does a great job. Besides, I've been promised I'll get to reprise Gohan if Kai gets that far!" Back when it was thought Kai was cancelled, he posted the news on his Facebook page and said, "Well, so much for reprising Gohan..." So I'm sure he'll be happy to hear the news!

Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
I have never heard a Palencia-voiced Goten. I know that Edwards had to yield the role of Videl to Palencia in Super DragonBall Z, but that was due to a scheduling conflict with Edwards's wedding (and Goten wasn't in that game). This is the only instance I'm aware of where either character was voiced by someone other than Edwards.
Edwards still makes regular convention appearances, and although I have never heard her official stance on Kai, I can't imagine that she would relinquish the roles that started her career in voice acting to someone else.

Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
Again, I think Kyle Hebert is the coolest guy, but I haven't heard him in a role that I like yet. His Gyumao is a weird character-voice, his Paikuhan lacked impact/authenticity (kind of like Schemmel's original Nail, both of which were "tough character" voices), and his Gohan sounds forced. Hebert sounds like the 40 year old man that he is...and his Gohan isn't that far off. I'm not going to knock him on his acting, as all the other FUNimation actors got WAY better from Z to Kai, but at least in the newer video games his Gohan has sounded even older than before. I really think Colleen could do it...I know they already promised Kyle the role, but I hope they at least give her a shot behind the scenes. I wouldn't want Hebert to be totally left out...so maybe he could voice Kibit?

Colleen's Luffy sounds very alike pre-teen Gohan and even though she makes an effort to try and differentiate her vocal on the characters it ends up all pretty much the same (except for Android 18). I don't like her voice, it's too annoying.
Keep the original FUNimation VA for teen Gohan and don't make the same mistake twice.. Nice day?

I do hope that Kara Eddwards does come back. She really nails Videl and Goten for me in the series and I couldn't really imagine anyone else in those roles.
It's entirely possible that they can bring her back, just look to the Travis Willingham/Dartanian Nickelback scenario as an example.

I've never understood what's great about Brad Swaile's Gohan, IMO he sounds incredibly generic.

Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
Huh, Penguintruth got me thinking, they may recast Kaioshin since Kent Williams is already Dr. Gero and they've been loosening up a lot of the smaller roles with new talent. There's no one at the top of my head I'd like to hear though, and I wouldn't be too depressed about Williams playing him again anyway.

Kara Edwards was recently on Heaven's Lost Property and Heaven's Lost Property Forte as Nymph. On the latter one of the commentaries mentioned her being back. And while I'm not sure who she played, did notice her in the credits for quite a few Panty & Stocking episodes.

Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
So, I just remembered - the Japanese voice actor for Videl has said if Kai ever got to the Boo arc, she wouldn't return to voice Videl. If they're recording the tournament now, Videl has already been in a good amount of episodes. I wonder who voices her now.
Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
She said that had popped out of her mouth in her sorrow at Daisuke Gouri's funeral, and it's not her real decision. She's now studying English abroad, but she said she would be briefly back for her already-cast roles.Tanooki Kuribo wrote:So, I just remembered - the Japanese voice actor for Videl has said if Kai ever got to the Boo arc, she wouldn't return to voice Videl.

Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
For the sake of making things less expensive, I'd bet that they'll use the current replacement score. For consistency's sake, I wouldn't mind it. At the same time, though, some new music like the reanimated scenes from Ultimate Blast would be really neat in their own way. It would be kind of ironic, though, for the Boo Arc to be the only one without Z's Boo Arc music.penguintruth wrote:I'm curious as to who will be composing the music. Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
They should use Takaki cause he has done great with the reanimated cutscenes from Ultimate Tenkaichi, they actually used his music even for recent productions like Episode of Bardack.
And if they do so, they might not only ask him a new score with numerous new tracks from him, but also use the ones he's done so far, which would open the way to several possibilities:
- The OST being released could include the new score and at the same time - finally - the scores for Plan to Eradicate the Super Saiyans, Episode of Bardack and Ultimate Tenkaichi.
- The scene with Gohan getting back to Earth to face Boo could musically mirror the reanimated scene from Ultimate Tenkaichi (unless they choose to toss in the whole reanimated footage altogether, which would make most fans unhappy since they don't like when different graphic styles collide from one second to the other).

Based off of international cartoon standards? I guess there's going to be a lot of censoring.
Gohan: Mr. Buu, you're mean (instead of stupid / idiot / retard / simpleton).
Buu, Piccolo, Goten, Trunks and the Narrator all shocked at Gohan calling Buu by 'mean'.

I can see NT airing these as "missing episodes" or a "mid-quel" (sorta like Robotech 2: The Sentinals) and FUNi having the DVDs uncut so they at least have that novelty as a selling point.
Re: Kai Continues Outside Japan
I hope they'll make two versions: one as uncut as it gets, and another cut...
