FUNimation really did their best voice acting for games?

Post by dbboxkaifan » Thu Nov 22, 2012 6:50 pm

That might very well be true, though, they have never dubbed the openings of the games. Why?

Except for Budokai 1 which they used Rock the Dragon (Official Title: Main Title).

Instead of having real English dubbed openings Kageyama sings in Engrish which most of the time is hard to understand without subtitles.

Funimation doesn't dub the games. Namco Bandai (and Atari before them) hires Chris Sabat's recording studio Okratron5000 to do it. As for why they don't dub the songs, well I guess Namco Bandai didn't want to do that.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.

Vic Mignogna would disagree; that's his other job.

Too bad Namco Bandai does not pay the voice actors now these days to record anything new. They just reuse the same voice files over and over again.

Not to be rude or anything but I've seen you refer to it as "Wake The Dragon" a lot on the forum. The song is "Rock the Dragon."

I think that FUNimation really did their best with the games. They had better directors and writers for them. And I'm sure it was cheaper to just use instrumental versions of the songs and the "Engrish" versions would be to difficult to understand.

Last time I checked 'Rock the Dragon' is just a fan term anyway. But.... I'm not sure on this, personally I'd find it a tad jarring if we had English dubbed openings, especially since it seems they've ditched instrumental versions and just use the Japanese ones anyway.

Well, personally, I'd love to have these songs performed in English (with fitting and talented singers). It would make more sense to dub these songs that are made for Dragon Ball than to dub all the random J-pop songs in Detective Conan or One Piece.

You're correct.

The actual real title of the song is "Main Title".

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. I don't remember much from the remastered recordings, but Funi did better for the most part with the game voicing. Except for when Kai came out, that's their absolute best and the video games don't compare.
