Live Action Dragon Ball Web Series - "Runaways"
Re: Live Action Dragon Ball Web Series - "Runaways"
It was alright. I'm fine with the clothes looking normal and it being more "reserved". But Goku is definitely too somber. Where's his cheery attitude? That doesn't seem like it would be too weird to pull off in real life, even if it was pulled back a bit.
Besides that, it strayed a little too far from the actual storyline for my tastes. Specifically when Bulma insisted they go on a journey, but had no motive, and didn't know of the dragonballs yet.

Just give me a $250 million dollar budget and I'll make the greatest thing ever.

Wow, I've seen/read this scene a billion different times in the manga, anime, and the first movie, but it's kind of jaw-dropping how they took something that was originally very comical and slapstick and actually made me sweat, despite knowing what was going to happen.
Definitely something to keep an eye on. I think it's a little too soon to be calling foul on the actors just yet.

I really didn't like it and it didn't feel like Dragon Ball at all.
So many things missing like Bulma's vehicle, where is it? What about the Dragon Balls? The fish?

Interesting. I like how it looks, it's more grounded than any Dragon Ball inspired production I've seen before, and I kinda' dig that, the whole Smallville look works in some ways. It's nice to see a more ordinary looking Gokuh and Bulma, they certainly look better than their Evolution counterparts. The acting is certainly pretty 'meh', and the characters aren't too strong right now (especially Gokuh, jesus). Some scenes felt pretty damn awkward (that weird hug made me feel a little uncomfortable), and the suicide Gokuh moment was... weird. Bulma's past seems pretty dark, though I hope it's not... too dark.
The biggest problem is I can't tell whether I'm meant to laugh or not, be excited, or take it seriously, there doesn't seem to be any kind of theme going on. It's like someone saw the Nolan Batman films and thought they'd apply it to Dragon Ball (as much as they could).

What suicide Goku moment? The gun going off and shooting himself in the head? I just took it like he was looking the gun over, not sure what it was, and then accidentally shot himself with it. Would that be suicide if it was on accident? ...Hmm...at the same time, I dunno what you would call it other than that. Huh.Rory wrote:Some scenes felt pretty damn awkward (that weird hug made me feel a little uncomfortable), and the suicide Gokuh moment was... weird. Oh I'm aware of what it was, just dicking around calling it that. Gokuh shooting himself in the head and all.Gyt Kaliba wrote:What suicide Goku moment? Ahh, all right. I was beginning to think there was something I'd missed in this video to imply something that dark haha.Rory wrote:Oh I'm aware of what it was, just dicking around calling it that. I like the idea behind this, the execution of it however could've been done better. The acting was pretty bad and I didn't like the kid playing Goku, he seemed too emotionless and monotonous. I enjoyed watching it though and am always happy to see an interpretation of Dragon Ball, I'd definitely want to see more if only to see how they handle other elements of DB.

I'd much rather see a series done in the style of their end credits.
"I like the money it brings in, but Dragon Ball Heroes is the worst. That's actually the real reason I decided to start working on new material. I was afraid Bandai would make something irredeemably stupid like Super Saiyan 4 Broly." - Akira Toriyama, made up interview, 2013.
