A SSB style game
A SSB style game
I was thinking today how a Dragon Ball game made in the style of Super Smash Bros. would work and I think it could be pretty cool if done well! I realize we already have Battle Stadium D.O.N but I was thinking a more dedicated Dragon Ball game with a decent roster and some good stages. It'd be neat to just blast it out with 3 friends or in an online tournament and I think this type of game would work well, even if it was just for a handheld.
Re: A SSB style game
It might be cool but I feel the battles would lose their sense of grander if they were SSB style. The problem with the SSB style is that the camera for the battle is placed at a distance where all characters can be seen on the screen. As such you don't get that awesome feeling from the camera being right next to the character as they pull off a ki technique like the Kamehameha. Unless they decide to take the game in a direction where the camera is fixed on each individual player which might work on the new Wii U console.

Re: A SSB style game
It would be quite fun to play, as long as it had a silly nature and a lot of Dragon Ball cast, too much DBZ would make the characters way too overpowered and look too serious for that kinda game. I know smash can get pretty serious and intense, but more in a sort of "this cartoon hat-wearing monkey can shoot peanuts and throw bananas against this Italian plumber and this space fox, let's see how awesome I can be with this" way, as opposed to "I've got a super awesome powerful character so i need to pull off an infinite combo before turning super saiyan and blasting the opponent to pieces". 'Cause the point of the game is to knock your opponent off the screen, not destroy them, though for a dragon ball z theme it could be knocking them into outer space - which would be pretty cool
If you want it to play like smash I'd suggest having a lot of the more gag-ish characters from DB, still have have a standard DBZ cast (but simplified as to be balanced with DB chars.) so obviously like Goku (he could be the Link of the cast, having both an adult and a young version of him), Vegeta, Piccolo, Gohan (another possible Link), Krillin, basically all of the Z-senshi and a handful of main villains like Frieza, Cell, Buu, the androids (I'm thinking they could be like the ice climbers) and maybe even Ginyu for the fun that is the Ginyu Force, I'm thinking he could be like Pokemon Trainer where his down-b could have him switch between all the members of the force.
Those are just a few of my thoughts on it anyway. Obviously there are a million different ways to take it, for example with all stars battle royale where the point is to build up meter for your super attack, I guess with DBZ it could be who can build up the most handicap before the obligatory end of match beam struggle to win. Heck it could even be all based at a tenkaichi budokai and the aim is to simply knock the opponent out the ring and hit the ground. Possibilities are endless...

Re: A SSB style game
Namco Bandai is supposedly the team taking care of the next Super Smash Bros for the Nintendo Wii U, but I really don't expect SSB U to have any Dragon Ball characters but the usual ones.
It would be cool to have Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Friеza Full Power, Perfect Cell, Kid Buu (or Mr. Buu) and Vegito, but if I had to choose three: Goku, Friеza and Cell.
If NB released Battle Stadium D.O.N in HD and also Online Play, I'd definitely pre-order. Budokai HD is good (well, great) but it's missing the original music and no online gaming.

Re: A SSB style game
I think a SSB game would work better if limited to just the character from before we venture into Z territory, because they would fit more with a a light-hearted beat'em up style game than the hardcore, epic action Z is better known for. Here's a theoretical roster based on Brawl's numbers...
1. Kid Goku (Oozaru as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
2. Adult Goku
3. Kid Kuririn
4. Adult Kuririn
5. Muten Roshin/Jackie Chun (Full Power as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
6. Yamcha
7. Yajirobe
8. Tenshinhan
9. Chaozu
10. Gyumao
11. Kid Chi Chi
12. Adult Chi Chi
13. Bluma (Uses capsules for everything)
14. Bad Lunch
15. Norimaki Arale (Gacchan’s act like Ice Climbers)
16. Jinzoningen 8
17. Mr. Popo
18. Kami
19. Pilaf Gang (Switch between robots controlled by Pilaf, Shu and Mai, combine as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
20. Metallic
21. Murasaki
22. Blue
23. Tao Pai Pai
24. Cyborg Tao Pai Pai
25. Black (Battle Suit as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
26. Draculaman
27. Suke-san
28. Mummy-kun
29. Akkuman
30. Grandpa Gohan
31. Tambourine
32. Cymbal
33. Drum
34. Piccolo Daimao
35. Piccolo Jr. (Giant Form as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
1. Kid Goku (Oozaru as a "Final Smash" equivalent)
2. Adult Goku
3. Kid Kuririn
4. Adult Kuririn

Re: A SSB style game
I feel like an SSB type game would work better as a cross over like Battle Stadium, but include more characters from more anime series. A sequel to BSD if you will.
Re: A SSB style game
Maybe something like a console version of Jump Ultimate Stars? That's what I'd like--but even if it got made, it would never get an English release.
If TPP passes in your country it will be illegal for you to watch an imported DVD. Click here to learn more!
Re: A SSB style game
I agree with light-heartedness and I could totally see a chibi version of this kind of game. However I disagree that it should maybe be limited to Dragon Ball characters as characters from DBZ/GT could easily fit into the game the same way as you can have Samus vs. Bowser in SSB, whatever characters were chosen they'd just be given a moveset to fit in with everything regardless of their actual power level.
Yeah I also like the idea of another crossover game in this style too, I guess it'd appeal to a larger audience that way which can only be a good thing but I wouldn't want to sacrifice any cool characters/stages for the sake of a crossover.

Re: A SSB style game
It's not the movesets I'd be worried about. A lot of fans want to play something that represent the show, and Z/GT take off into high-speed, high-impact battles with dynamic camera angles for attacks and reactions. I fear "dumbing down" the later characters to fit in with that style of gameplay for a fighting game may turn off a huge chunk of the fanbase and would make the game flop. I'd play the game regardless of who was in it, but I feel Dragon Ball can just get away with it more than the later series; which is why Advance Adventure felt fairly fun despite being a simple side-scrolling beat'em up fighter, but Transformations just felt really disappointing. Not a perfect example, but it's good enough IMO.Sin wrote:I agree with light-heartedness and I could totally see a chibi version of this kind of game. Yeah, I know deep down I agree with your point, though I wouldn't mind seeing a couple of DBZ/GT unlockablesTheDevilsCorpse wrote:It's not the movesets I'd be worried about. Re: A SSB style game
I have Battle Stadium D.O.N. It's one of the worst games I've ever bought.
Personally I don't think this type of game works for Dragonball at all.
I guess because of the brand name it would still sell regardless.
It could work but I'd have to be convinced all over again after the last attempt in that style.
