Dragon Ball Watching Thread (DB Episode 14)

Post by Shinki14 » Mon Dec 10, 2012 9:44 pm

Hello all!

Now you've probably never heard of someone posting on here that's never heard of Dragon Ball..well I have. All I really know is fights. Lots. And lots. Of fights. A friend of mine posts on here (he forgot to tell me his username..) and he said I should really start watching the entire thing. All 508 episodes, movies, TV specials, etc. Which may take some time..but I'm ready for it. He owns all of the Season sets, so I'm going to be watching those. And yes, I'm going to watch the Japanese version. I'm not a big anime guy, but he says I'd much more enjoy the series in the way it was intended to be shown. I don't mind reading subtitles.

I should be getting his Season One set tomorrow, so I can review episode one.

So if you guys could give me some ideas of what to look forward too, that'd be awesome!

And PLEASE, no spoilers.

Thanks a ton!

You'll see lots of very well animated and choreographed fights. It starts out mostly comical, but starts easing into a bit of a more serious tone as the series progresses.

I think you'll enjoy it a lot! I haven't exactly seen "all" of Dragon Ball/Z yet. I've seen all of GT along with a TON of things Dragon Ball/Z. So I'm working on it! But what Metal Wario said above is true, you'll see a lot of that.

It gets significantly more interesting after episode 13, in my opinion. Even if you don't like it at first, I recommend that you don't quit on it until you get through at least 20 episodes.

Hey Shinki14! Welcome to the forum and, well, Dragon Ball fandom as a whole...Wow that was overwhelming lol

I think it's really cool how you've joined here and I just have a huge fascination of when people are being exposed to a series that I happen to like, for the first time! I look forward to your update!

New viewer. + 1.

Japanese version. +1

Not a big anime fan. +1

I love these kinds of threads. My fiancee and I have been going (back for me, for the first time for her) through the series from the first episode of Dragon Ball over the course of the last two years. We started GT the other day. Hopefully you'll enjoy it as well.

It's an exciting journey, I've been introducing the show to my dad (albiet, we watched Kai in place of the first 200 DBZ episodes) and we're about 1/3 through GT now. The only real anime familiarity he had previously was probably Ponyo, Summer Wars and Evangelion 2.0, and he's found it thouroughly enjoyable.

I'm interested to see where this goes! You are starting with "Dragon Ball" Season 1, not "Dragon Ball Z" Season 1, correct? I'm very curious, because most people in the English-speaking world started with DBZ and then worked back from there. Yes, that's a lot of anime to get thru, but as you can imagine everyone here thinks it's worth it! :D Enjoy!

All I will say is when you get to season 2 and you reach episode 37 be prepared to laugh like a hyena, I won't spoil why but trust me you will thank me for the heads up.

If anyone has any of the DB/DBZ/DBGT or Maho Tsuaki Sally Japanese single DVD's that they'd be interested in selling send me a PM and I'll see if we can work something out. ;).

A friend of mine also started watching Dragon Ball few weeks ago. He is 22 and didn't know anything about DB. Maybe only that it was a popular cartoon 10 years ago. He is currently watching Red Ribbon army arc and enjoying mostly gags, not fights. I wonder what will be his reaction after discovering some facts in late DB and early DBZ :) It's very interesting to see how adult person reacts to Dragon Ball.

Oh, you sound like an awesome and sympatethic guy! Welcome here!
Yes, the Japanese version is best and I recommend that. I don't have any sentimental thing in play, because my childhood version is the French one,
and I watched both US and Japanese versions much later (Finished the JP run last year).
The Japanese version is much more fun with it's jokes and humour, Goku is priceless in these situations and there are some awesome sounding voice actors,
like the one who appears later in Z (Freeza). US version simply killed it for me, as they tried to remake it into OMG standard hardcore show for US kids,
so the atmosphere of the Japanese original is completely gone a lot more than in the European ones.
Enjoy and tell us what you think ;)

My girlfriend is currently watching the series for the first time, and I'm watching it with her. We're at episode 61. I wish I'd got her to review as she watched, since I'm very interested in what she thinks. She seemed to love the comedy parts, but isn't interested in fighting, so from here on she might lose interest.

Be sure to give Dragon Ball Z Kai a try as well sometime. A fresh opinion on a Z vs Z Kai would be welcome to be heard.

English Dub is my recommendation (Seeing as it is a much, MUCH better performance than Z).

Well I may have time to do more than one today!

Episode 1: Bulma and Son Goku

Thoughts: Wow quite a start! I really enjoyed this episode to be honest. It was funny and got serious too. I love the music too. Especially whenever the fish is going for Goku's tail, and when Goku and Bulma are walking to Son Goku's house. Also, what should I refer to him as? Goku or Son Goku? Not too sure. The ending was quite funny with the dinosaur, I must admit. GOKU IS SO NAIVE. He doesn't know what girls are..? How does expect to have children?

Predictions: I don't know if they'll find a Dragon Ball next episode. I'm interested in seeing what happens with Pilaf (I believe that's his name), as he DOES have a Dragon Ball. Maybe he'll be a enemy..? Who knows. But I'm for sure looking forward to it!

Glad to see you enjoyed the first episode. It's going to be a blast getting a newcomer's perspective, I'm sure, as it's all old hat to us by now. As for his name, Son Goku is his full name, Son being his family name and Goku his given name (Eastern custom puts the family name first). As in, my name is Lance Rumowicz, but you would generally just refer to me as Lance. But different characters refer to him by different names. You'll soon see that Blooma (Bulma) almost exclusively calls him "Son-kun," his family name with the honorific typically used for boys, while a couple of other characters call him "Son." Most characters call him "Goku," though.

Mine was/is the same.

We had to jump to the manga for the latter portion of the Namek/Freeza arc. The following arc was also sort of a struggle once you-know-who showed up and the mystery aspect died down. After that, though, she loved it again.

I think we're going to go for Kai because she'll get bored when the fights are dragging, and I'll just insert some of the filler episodes like Gohan Makes a Friend. Even the non-comedic fights of the 21st Tenkaichi Bodokai weren't really entertaining for her, but she says she wants to watch it.

I love this thread and I love that you're doing this! I'm also glad to see that you enjoyed the first episode. I'm sure you'll enjoy the ride (Tip: When you get to DBZ...things do tend to drag out a little, so be prepared)!

Good luck and I can't wait to see future reviews!

Also, welcome! :D

Episode 2: Alalala~! No Balls

Thoughts: When I saw the episode title screen with the name, I must admit I was alittle creeped. But besides that, I LOVED this episode! I'd love to see more of Goku and Bulma chillin in a house with their misadventures. And the fact that Goku is 14 stunned me. I thought he was Atleast 10! But hey, I guess I'll just play along. But really enjoyed the music again. And the credits theme! I'll Give You Romance is a darn good song I must say. But I must say I was looking forward to more between Goku and Pilaf's henchmen (Mai and the other one....does he have a name)? But since Pilaf has a ball, I'd guess we'd see more.

Predictions: I feel like this turtle has a big role in the next episode. Maybe he's taking them into a trap..? Maybe he has a Dragonball? Who knows. I expect to see Pilaf show up again next episode, but not get another ball. And I expect the gang to get another ball...but I'm not sure how.
Heya! The name's Shinki.
