Episode 5: The Strong Villain of the Desert, Yamcha
Thoughts: I like Yamcha. Seem's strong enough to beat Goku. His fear of girls is just hilarious as well Maybe someday he'll get over it. But his little friend...does she have a name? SHE'S ANNOYING. But I'm glad Oolong hitched along for the ride. Are they ever gonna see Kame-Sen'nin again?! Two episodes and I haven't seen him..I miss Kame-Sen'nin. And surprisingly yet another episode with Pilaf missing in action. I wonder what those three are up to..
Predictions: Next episode, a DragonBall will be found. I'm sure of it! And I expect to see Pilaf back...somehow. And please for the love of God, bring Kame-Sen'nin and the turtle back! And maybe Oolong will do something badass..and I expect to see Yamcha next episode. And maybe they'll get to Mount Frypan like they spoke of early in the episode.

Yes, it's Pu-erh (named after the tea). Also, he's a he, not a she. Funnily enough, the FUNimation English dub at one point mentioned him as "her".

But the things you say about these releases are nonsense and just plain dumb. Like you Metalwario64"--final_flash
This is pretty funny and awesome to see you reaction to dragon ball as it progresses .
Vegeta: "Funny... I seem to recall Kakarot being fed the same information right before he transformed; the distinct look on your faces when he went Super Saiyan didn't exactly inspire confidence. That's precisely why ordinary men pursue the concept of perfection, it's infatuation. But ultimately I have to ask myself "What is the true meaning of being perfect?" and the answer I came up with was nothing. Not one thing. The truth of the matter is I despise perfection! If something is truly perfect, that's IT! The bottom line becomes there is no room for imagination! No space for intelligence or ability or improvement! Do you understand? To men of science like us, perfection is a dead end, a condition of hopelessness. Always strive to be better than anything that came before you but not perfect! Scientist's agonize over the attempt to achieve perfection! That's the kind of creatures we are! We take joy in trying to exceed our grasp, in trying to reach for something that in the end, we have to admit may in fact be unreachable!"
Thoughts: Goodness gracious this was a funny episode. From Yamcha seeing Bulma naked, to the characters being absolute idiots and not realizing that Oolong and Pu'er look NOTHING like Goku and Bulma...wow. AND PILAF! YES! Good to see him. No DragonBalls found in this episode, surprisingly enough. We haven't found one since episode 4, correct? But alas, they'll find them. Are they finally headed to Mount Frypan? Let's hope. And Yamcha hopefully is gonna stick around cuz I like him. And WHERE IS KAME-SEN'NIN?! He needs to come back soon.
Predictions: They're gonna get to Mount Frypan and find the DragonBall. This Gyumao guy sounds tough, but I think Goku can beat him. Maybe Pilaf will show up and try and get the ball, but if Goku and company get it, the last one will have to be with Pilaf.
Thoughts: Well hey! They finally made it to Mount Frypan. And KAME SEN'NIN IS BACK! Well, he will be next episode I hope. It seems like Gyumao is on the good side for now, but his daughter seems crazy! And Goku's tail being a weakness..hm..I've wondered what that tail was for anyway.
Predictions: Well, we didn't see any Pilaf this episode so I don't expect to see him again in the next. I think this Basho Fan will get rid of the flames on Mount Frypan and they'll get the Dragonball..or maybe Yamcha will snag it. No clue. And I think Chi-Chi will come along with the gang for the last ball, which is with Pilaf!
Thoughts: Great to see Kame-Sen'nin! And DANG can he get jacked quickly. That Kamehameha was awesome! And to see Goku do it not even 5 minutes later was cool as well! Kame-Sen'nin's pervert effect takes full stride here of course..and poor Oolong! He just accepts his fate as Bulma's slave since he took that pill. Sad to see Chi-Chi stay with Gyumao, but hey, maybe she'll show up again.
Predictions: We're gonna see some Pilaf. There's one ball left, and Pilaf has it. He's gonna show up some how or another. I still stand by my prediction of an epic battle between Goku and Pilaf. Or maybe Yamcha will take it since he's still following them. Whatever happens, I'm excited!
Really enjoying reading these reviews. Hearing the experiences I haven't felt in a long time brings back the nostalgia of my first time.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!
Spoiler:
Doctor. wrote:I've explained before, I'll just paraphrase myself.
Power levels establish tension and drama. People who care about them (well, people who care about them in a narrative) don't care about the big numbers or the fancy explosions. If you have character A who's so much above character B, who's the main character, you're gonna be left wondering how in the hell character B, the character we're supposed to care and root for, is going to escape the situation or overcome the odds. It makes us emotionally invested.
If character B doesn't escape the situation in a believable way that's consistent with previous events, then that emotional investment is gone. It was pointless tension, pointless drama made just to suck in the viewer. It has no critical value whatsoever. The audience is left believing that the author can just create whatever scenarios he wants and what happens to the characters is decided by whatever the author wants to happen, regardless of the events that happened in the story. Which, in fairness, is what happens, but the audience wants to be fooled. The audience wants to know that the world they're following has rules. That the world they're invested in isn't going to bend to external factors that are irrelevant to them.
An author can do whatever he wants with the characters, that's not false. But the author should also have the responsibility to make sure it fits in cohesively with the other events in the narrative he has created.
This is easily my favourite Kanzenshuu thread. I never got to experience the series in this way because I saw DBZ first. If you start watching the series from episode 154, then when you go back and watch the first 153 it's never going to be the same.
Thoughts: Another laugher! Boss Rabbit seemed like a hilarious guy and I'd like to see him come back. No Pilaf in this episode sadly...and no DragonBall found. But hey, this is a good alternative. I don't mind seeing some filler every once in a while. As long as they get to a DragonBall soon I'll be happy. Hopefully the Rabbit comes back soon..even though he's currently stuck on the moon, but hey
Predictions: ALRIGHT I PROMISE THIS TIME IT WILL HAPPEN. Pilaf will show up. Goku and the gang will meet up possibly at his big palace thing, and a fight will begin. I know this arc is 13 episodes, so I guess this fight will be really drawn out..who knows. Really looking forward to what I see.
