DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
As much as I prefer the original color pages to this new coat of paint, I'd buy them if they came out in English.
Speaking of which, how do you guys see the chances of a Viz release? I'd say it's very unlikely, simply because they didn't even put all the colored pages in the Vizbigs.

Well, if Viz does a release, it would be in full color simply because that is the draw of the release (having the manga in full color). If Viz thinks that they can make their money back (and then some) to do a translated, full color release, they'll do it. Fan demand for it is a good first step; it also helps that there's more differing it from the Kanzenbans from Viz' point of view (they basically did their own version of that with the Vizbig volumes).Son Satan wrote:As much as I prefer the original color pages to this new coat of paint, I'd buy them if they came out in English.

But why was it like that in the Vizbigs? Why were there pages that were not displayed in colors like the original while others were?Son Satan wrote: Speaking of which, how do you guys see the chances of a Viz release? Was there a technical reason for that? Or a legal reason? Or was it an artistic choice because they thought it was best for a specific reason to leave those colored pages in black and white?
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Its cheaper not to have all the pages of color, especially since there are a lot of color pages in Dragon Ball compared to other mangas. Of course, they will never admit that.Cold Skin wrote:But why was it like that in the Vizbigs? But, if they release this version of the manga, they will have to include all the color pages obviously.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
That's the exact reason I have doubts that it will get translated. Certainly, these are shorter volumes than the Vizbigs were, but if Viz was against putting 45 or so pages of color in a book, I doubt they'd want to put a whole book in color.rereboy wrote:Its cheaper not to have all the pages of color, especially since there are a lot of color pages in Dragon Ball compared to other mangas. I can imagine them doing it, but making it expensive as hell. Like, $20+ a volume.Son Satan wrote:As much as I prefer the original color pages to this new coat of paint, I'd buy them if they came out in English.

Expensive as Hell? $20 or so is fairly standard for a collection of Marvel/DC comics in Paperback for about 200 pages.funrush wrote:I can imagine them doing it, but making it expensive as hell. That said, my full color Saint Seiya: Next Dimension Vol 1 was 750 yen for about 150 pages (or about $8.90 now...not counting that ridiculous $40 shipping...). Though, given the price of regular manga, and the fact that they end up around $7.99-$9.99? I could see the price being between $15-$25 for these in English. If any manga's going to sell at that price, it's going to be Dragon Ball (I'd kill for good sized hardcovers of these, but that's not likely at all).
I really want this released in English. I was looking for a good excuse to re-read the manga, and a full color release (especially with a new translation) would be just what I needed.

But the Vizbig volumes are a high quality omnibus release with a low price. Their price per original volume was pretty low, considering the quality of the release. That's why they probably felt the need to cut some corners.Son Satan wrote:That's the exact reason I have doubts that it will get translated. This new release could be very different.
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Yeah. These comics should be smaller than the Vizbigs, but their full color status compensate when it comes to prices. If they kept them around the size of the Kanzenbans, perhaps they could keep them the price of the Vizbig volumes, or maybe somewhat cheaper, but perhaps I'm just dreaming.rereboy wrote:But the Vizbig volumes are a high quality omnibus release with a low price. Also, I hope this succeeds to such a degree that it warrants the same process occurring to Dragon Ball's first 16 volumes. A complete color manga would be a dream release (and success of it leading to other manga getting colored would be grand).
Also, Mike mentioned my posting in the news of the podcast (not for Dragon Ball, but me mentioning that Saint Seiya's official sequel being in color). Hey, a reference is a reference (and I'm the kind of nerd who loves references, lol).

I'm definately too eager to have those to wait for years.
I might consider buying them directly imported from Japan, if we learn that they are available on Amazon or such sites by then.
But then, that would be the first time I import anything... I wonder how the paying will go, like will they automatically convert the price from yen to euros to take the right amount on my credit card?
Anyway, if that were to happen, I'd end up with the Japanese text, but at least I'd have the color pictures, I'd be able to scan them and have them all on my computer, and perhaps digitally replace the text with the official Kanzenban translation myself. That would still be great while waiting for an official local release in years.
So it's something I'll think about, if the opportunity comes up!

They're already listed on Amazon Japan (see Kanzenshuu's new post for details). The currencies will be converted automatically when you order online. It's all really simple. You will have to make an Amazon Japan account, but that isn't hard either.Cold Skin wrote:I'm definately too eager to have those to wait for years.

If TPP passes in your country it will be illegal for you to watch an imported DVD. Click here to learn more!
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
Given that we now have some previews of the style of how the manga is going to be colored, do you think the style works for the manga as a whole or would it be more preferred to stick with the old color style?

While it's not perfect, I'm thinking it might look rather nice, especially in the release proper. I just hope once this releases, we can get a few good scans to give us an idea of how it looks in person. Proper scans would look better than shots from a magazine, of course.

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
I'm surprised we haven't seen or heard about the new covers yet. Up until now, they had Toriyama drawing unique artworks for covers.
So I wonder: will they have him draw new arts again? will they use artworks that already exist? will it be the first manga edition to have a cover drawn by someone else entirely?
Anyway, since importing from Amazon proved to be less handy than I thought - especially with prizes that can be way exagerated for a simple import and potentially having to deal with a second payment to some extra company -, I'll probably just have to wait for a local release here to give them my money for the whole collection!
I just hope that in the (long) meantime, someone, somewhere in the world, somewhere on the web, will scan it all and make it available on PC screens while we're unable to have the official high-quality paper prints. And I doubt it. Would have been easier if Shueisha had made it available on download directly, like "pay, download immediately, you have it right now wherever you are in the world" or if there was a way to have it like "if you engage to buy your local edition when it comes out, we give you the free Japanese pages in digital format right now to keep you waiting". Not too realistic, though...
Anyway, I guess it's not such a big deal after all. Here we have the Kanzenban and Anime Comics being released, some other countries like the US don't even have that for now, so I guess we're already lucky enough as it is when it comes to Dragon Ball books right now: some people have waited much more than us to have much less as of yet. So we can wait!

Well, it might not be the clearest scan but it looks pretty good to me thus far.
The real question is what colour is Karin going to be?
Okay, I'm only being slightly facetious there. Are they just going with the anime colour schemes or are we going to get a blue Kibito eventually?

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
From what I can tell, this looks slightly more like manga color direction (take note in Gokuu's orange gi and how unsaturated it is compared to the anime colors), but I could be wrong. Also, knowing Toriyama, we might get a magenta Karin for all we know! =P

I wonder if Shueisha used the same technology DC used to allow the re-coloring of The Killing Joke?

Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
It kinda already looks like they aren't just copying the anime colors given Kuririn's eyes, Vegeta's scouter, and the Kame gi. If they decided to release the Boo arc in full color Kibito may or may not be blue. Colors in Toriyama's artwork are inconsistent so I don't think anything is a given. I am expecting a red Kamehameha like in their full color online release of the first arc.Mattie Rose wrote: Are they just going with the anime colour schemes or are we going to get a blue Kibito eventually?
Re: DBZ portion of Manga to be in full color?!
And I wonder if they will choose only one consistent color scheme (meaning that Gohan's clothes will remain purple all the time),
or if they'll adapt to the latest color changes by Toriyama as the chapters goes on like they did with the digital manga (meaning that Gohan's clothes will switch from purple to green for example).

I really hope it's consistent.
