Giant Characters: Playable vs Proper Scale

Post by Saiga » Mon Jan 07, 2013 1:55 am

In the Budokai Tenkaichi/Sparking! series, we got giant characters, such as the Oozaru or Hildegaan, added to the playable roster for what I believe is the first time. The giants, while still being noticeably bigger than the regular fighters, were scaled down in size for balance purposes. Ultimate Tenkaichi/Blast used a different approach, by having faithfully sized giant characters available as boss battles instead of playable characters.

Which approach would you prefer to see in future games? Or would you like them to forget the balance and just give us playable, faithfully sized giants? Or to not have giant characters at all?

I would prefer they give us full sized giant characters that you can control instead of bosses as Ultimate Blast had. I really don't see the problem. On PS2 there were several constraints that let us to have stages very limited in size, but on current gen that is not really an issue. If they manage to do bigger stages, playable giant characters could work, as long as they work a little more on their collissions than what they did on Sparking.

While I do see where you're coming from Saiga, it's up to the initiative of the dev team to make it work. And as it stands, the only example we have of a faithful reproduction for proportions stems from a game that is irksome.

Hopefully, one day soon, I'll get to destroy Kami's Lookout as an Oozaru, but we've yet to know the plans for Raging Blast 3.

I'd rather see fully scaled arenas tbh. But I can see playing as a fully scaled giant only working in story mode.

I'm torn, because while I prefer accuracy, I don't imagine it being that fun to play as a character that big...

And you wouldn't want them to be boss battle only?

Depends on how fun the battles are I guess. The ones in Ultimate Blast didn't seem that great from the videos, practically as repetitive as the normal gameplay, including QTEs. If they could do them more justice though, then I have no problem with them being added.

I'd kind of prefer it if there was a way to have the characters be as large as they're supposed to be, and still be playable in a fun way - that'd be the best of both worlds. Until a game comes along that does figure out how to do both though, I don't mind it just going one way or another.

...Hmm. Has there ever been a game where your 'boss fights' were against fully sized giant characters, but then you also had them as playable versions, but those ones alone were sized down?

I much prefer the manageable sized versions with got in the Tenkaichi games. If they were to scale...there'd be no way to implement them as playable outside of a specific story mode sequence that wouldn't be completely broken.

I'd love a mode where you can fight giant monster against giant monster like Godzilla. That would be awesome. I don't see why they can't make the characters their actually size and have them playable. It should be possible.

Naruto Storm 2 did this with Itachi's Susanoo.

Also Graffiti Kingdom for PS2 had this, when you unlocked every Giant Boss playable.

You can't really have Oozaru being 20 times bigger than a human or they would be like a few pixels high. This problem can be seen in Bleach Heat The Soul 7 when you play as one of the giant characters (who are about fifteen times bigger than the normal characters)
