Opinions on returning voice actors?

Post by Ringworm128 » Sat Jan 12, 2013 11:45 pm

Since there is a topic for the recasts I thought there should be one for the returning voice actors.
Goku: I've always liked Sean Schemmel as Goku and Kai is no exception. He even puts more of a "kid at heart" aspect into his performance.
Vegeta: I always thought Chris Sabat was great as Vegeta but in Kai he is even better. He takes everything that was good about his Z performance and polishes it while adding a smug smoothness to his voice. IMO Chris Sabat as Vegeta is the best returning voice for the Kai dub.

Goku: Schemmel does a much better job now. He doesn't sound dull like he did most of the time throughout Z, and still sounds epic as ever. I still hate his take on the kid side of Goku, it just sounds way to awkward instead of natural like Nozawa or Masako X.

Vegeta: Is loads better now. He sounds cocky, acts like a prince, and with the script doesn't have stupid comebacks he used to do like SAD FOR YOU

Yamcha: No longer a surfer dude. +

Tenshinhan: IDK he has less screen time then Yamcha so I always forget.

Krillin: Better acted, but he was always one of the better ones at funimation

Cell: I love the troll Cell we see and he is somewhat better. Still times I like the old voice by Clarke. Lordcreavos kinda mixes the old and new Cell voices Clarke did which might make him better then Current Cell.

Kami: No longer just sounds like an old man but sounds a lot wiser

Roshi: Still sounds good but never was a problem in Z

Kaio: Voice still sucks. I just find it really odd and more weird then wise. Bettter acted but should have been changed all together.
Why Dragon Ball Consistency in something such as power levels matter!

You people just love making me do lists don't you.

All right, let's see here...

Bardock (Sonny Strait) - A really small part, too small for me to really tell if he's improved or not. I thought he did pretty good the first time around, personally, though. I'm extremely curious to hear him do Episode of Bardock eventually, even if that special itself is kinda...meh.

Goku (Sean Schemmel) - Oh man, he has come a LONG way. But he already was, if you ask me. Sure, he was pretty flat back in the days when they all first started, but I think that he'd become a decent enough actor even by the end of the Cell material. By the Buu stuff, he had a much better grasp of what to do for Goku's performance. Then he improved even more drastically by the Ultimate Uncuts. Now in Kai, he pretty much is English language Goku to me, more so than MasakoX could be (no offense to his performance either though of course, he's good too).

Vegeta (Chris Sabat) - He's come a really long way too. I think he'd already found a place to put his Vegeta voice by the Buu material, but he still didn't quite have any other aspects of the character's side down except for his annoyance. That's a pretty big part of Vegeta, but those other sides still needed to be represented. He showed shades of getting better with this in the Uncuts, and then when Kai came around...holy crap. I agree with the assessment that he may be the most improved returning performance in Kai.

Piccolo (Chris Sabat) - Like his Vegeta, Sabat had already been making great strides over the years to separate his Piccolo voice much better. But man, was he bad with it at first - in DBZ he was fine, but the first time I heard his work as Piccolo 'Jr.' in Dragon Ball, all I could hear was Vegeta. But, once again, by the tail end of the Z series, he had it pretty well worked out. In the Uncuts, nothing really changed though. Once he hit Kai though...well, at first it sounded like he was doing Zoro from One Piece more than Piccolo. I assumed this was intentional. But then, as Kai went on, it went back to more the normal Piccolo voice that I'm used to, just with a much better performance than ever before.

Future Trunks (Eric Vale) - Ugh, talk about a complicated situation. On the one hand, Vale is heads-over-heels a much better actor than he was back when he first performed Trunks. But...the rasp, good lord. I don't know if this was intentional, or what. I can only assume that maybe it came from him trying to force a younger voice, since back when he first played the character he was much closer in age with Trunks than he is now. I dunno. I think he would have been fine with just his natural voice like before, more or less like he does with Sanji.

Krillin (Sonny Strait) - This would almost be my other suggestion for most improved, if it weren't for the fact that, outside of a few instances, Strait was never bad in this role. The main thing Strait has done over time is to lower the pitch a bit more back to being closer to his natural voice. Sometimes, I think he does go overboard with this, and it approaches his Hughes voice...but in a way, that's actually a nice thing too. People's voices DO fluctuate in different situations - while I may sound vaguely Strait-ish at times in my normal voice (according to some people anyway), when I get excitable or flustered, it can crack and go closer to what someone might associate with Ayres. Anyway, Strait continues to be my ideal English Krillin.

Yamcha (Chris Sabat) - Well...the acting is better, and he's gotten rid of the surfer accent, so I'm fine with the role now. I still dunno what went wrong with his performance in Blood Rubies though.

Tenshinhan (John Burgmeier) - I never really had anything against his work in the role before, but at the same time, he doesn't really do any better or any worse in Kai than he did before...so it's even I guess.

Master Roshi (Mike McFarland) - He's gotten better over the years too, but for the most part, it's really just business as usual.

Yajirobe (Mike McFarland) - About the same as well.

Chi Chi (Cynthia Cranz) - I think she's gotten much better at playing Chi Chi in those few 'soft' moments the character gets, but she could still do better if she channeled some Botan from YYH in those moments (just without the faux-British tone). The angry moments though? Out of the ball park, every time.

Ox King (Kyle Hebert) - Ehh. *hand waves* I never had a problem with his performance, the character is too much in the background for me to really do much with him anyway. He does make him sound slightly less derpy now though, so there's that.

Mr. Satan (Chris Rager) - Like Strait, I think he's knocked this role out of the park since day one, so if anything he just has more acting experience to levy at the role now. Which is always good.

Caroni (John Burgmeier) - Same as it was last time, but it amuses the hell out of me that they kept the same people for these roles of all roles.

Pirozhki (Kyle Hebert) - Same as above.

Piza (Linda Young) - Same as above-the-above, though I will add that...eh. There comes a point in time where an actress of a certain age, even vocally, probably shouldn't play a bubbly, 'sexy' role like this one. It's for this same reason that I was fine with Fujiko in Lupin being recast at last, and why I'll probably be fine with the re-casting of Natasha from Rocky and Bullwinkle (whatever it is they're doing with that now anyway). I'm not sure who I'd want in her place either though. Luci Christian maybe?

Mrs. Briefs (Cynthia Cranz) - Always worked before, nothing's changed now, moving on.

Raditz (Justin Cook) - I actually thought he did a lot better back in the Ultimate Uncuts. It seemed like he overdid the yelling on absolutely every line the character said this time. I think he's just out of practice though, he's more of a behind-the-scenes guy at FUNi nowadays, so it'd make sense. Thankfully he shook more dust off in the newer YYH stuff.

Nappa (Phil Parsons) - About the same as what he did in the Ultimate Uncuts from what I remember, and I liked him there too, so it works. Nobody measures up to the Japanese actor though.

Nail (Sean Schemmel) - Ehhh...he did better this time around, but I still think I can hear his Goku too much in here, even if the tone is entirely different. And as long as they were re-casting so many people on Namek, why not him too? As for who could replace him...hmm...this probably would have been a fun role for Brian Massey actually.

Kui (Bill Townsley) - It worked the first time, and it worked here again too. He's got a great voice for a slimy guy like Kui.

Recoome (Chris Sabat) - ...Er...well...he's not nearly as obnoxiously um...'politically correct term for what we all think his Recoome sounds like', as he was before. So that's an improvement I guess. In the long role though, this was not the role he should have kept out of the Force if he had to keep any of them. I'm thinking Bob Carter would have done good here, if he could do something different enough from his Bojack.

Dr. Gero (Kent Williams) - About the same voice as before, but Williams has become an even better actor now (and he was far from shabby before anyway), so I have zero complaints here.

Android 16 (Jeremy Inman) - Okay, I take it back. Vegeta is the second most improved returning performance. It's not even funny how much better Inman is this time around. He's actually acting now! And man was it beautiful.

Android 17 (Chuck Huber) - He was pretty good the first time around, but his acting's definitely better this time around, and he is doing better at sounding young I think. I'm infinitely curious about who did some of the battle reacts for 17 though, since Huber had to pass on some of that work due to his heart attack. I don't think FUNi will ever reveal out of respect to him though.

Cell (Dameon Clarke) - He did great the first time around, and this time he was even better for the most part. Imperfect Cell was AMAZING this time around, there was such maniacal glee there, I loved it. Second form Cell still suffers from a bit too much gravel, but at least he doesn't sound mushmouthed anymore. Perfect Cell's about the same voice, but I did love the snarky side they gave him this time, but that may be more on the writers than Clarke.

Baba (Linda Young) - Honestly, I can't remember what her Kai work here sounded like.

Kami (Chris Sabat) - About the same as before, just with better acting.

Korin (Chris Sabat) - Same as it ever was. I always preferred Britten's voice though really.

King Enma (Chris Rager) - Same as it ever was, moving on.

Bubbles (Chris Sabat) - Same as always. Not exactly much to improve here unless he or someone else can pull a Frank Welker and do a more dead-no monkey.

Gregory (John Burgmeier) - Uggghhh. I think this one is more about some really high pitched filter they used on the recordings this time, but if it's not, what in the HELL happened? He sounds worse than Chiaotzu or Puar EVER did in the original dub of DBZ. I had an easier time understanding them. If he just sounded like he had in DBZ, this would have been fine.

King Kai (Sean Schemmel) - I think he got a lot better here too honestly. Yes, yes, I know, this isn't how the character is supposed to sound, it focuses on his goofy side more than his smart side, yadda yadda. I get that. But for what it is, I feel it works. And acting wise, Schemmel did get a lot better here, so that's great.

Shenron (Chris Sabat) - Same as it ever was really.

Porunga (Chris Sabat) - See above.

Okay, that's all I can think of. Long post is long, I need a drink.

I don't have a lot to say about the dub actors since they're about as good as they are in the late Tenkaichi Budokai/Burst Limit/Raging Blast series of games, but on the Japanese side, Nozawa, Horikawa, and Furukawa kill it. The "argument" that Goku sounds like a girl carries less weight as each day passes and Nozawa's voice deepens with age. Horikawa brought everything he had to Vegeta's death scene, which is kind of amazing in the sense he's had to have recorded those lines again and again in the games.

If I have to mention a dub actor, I'll defend Sabat's Vegeta. Could another capable actor do well in the role and lighten Sabat's workload? Sure. Is he terrible in any way at it? Not at all. My be-all-end-all role for the guy is still Piccolo, but Vegeta's the close second. He can give up Yamcha and anybody else, though.

Bardock (Sonny Strait) - He's not as solid as he was before. That yell just kept making me think of Usopp. ...that or I've listened to too much Usopp and that's really how he yells without going all Krillin. :wtf:

Goku (Sean Schemmel) - He's come a long way. He gets it now. However, his voice can get really strained usually when he plays up Goku's more upbeat personality. It doesn't sound natural. His screams are extremely grating, too. He makes Goku sound like he's in pain, and those were the only moments that those screams make sense (i.e. Kaio-Ken x3-4,etc) The strongest aspect of this performance is his Super Saiyan bits with Freeza, which pretty much blew me away and I actually believed he was Goku albeit for a short time. I've enjoyed his takes on Goku's more gentle moments on the character, though. But, either way, I applaud him for improving so much despite my problems with his voice.

Vegeta (Chris Sabat) - Sabat still sounds like a chain smoker to me than a rogue prince. But, his performance was better for the character and he's probably one of the most improved, but inconsistent and I blame the fact that he's playing multiple roles for that.

Piccolo (Chris Sabat) - Solid. No complaints. It sounds awesome. He acted it really well. Yeah. ...ok, one complaint, and it does lie to the fact that he played multiple roles. There would be times where he would fall into his current Vegeta voice, when he yells. This is most noticable in the Motivational Piccolo scene. ...heh.

Future Trunks (Eric Vale) - His delivery improved, but good freaking lord that rasp is out of control. It doesn't sound pleasant at all. @_@ Very forced.

Krillin (Sonny Strait) - I can dig it. He's also one of the more improved performances in here. He's pretty much the ideal Krillin...even though he's a pretty darn good Usopp. ....dangit. XD

Yamcha (Chris Sabat) - Again, acting's better. And yay no Haven't really seen Blood Rubies, though.

Tenshinhan (John Burgmeier) - It's better. But, honestly, I never really was that picky with this character...for some...reason.

Master Roshi (Mike McFarland) - He's one of my favorite dub voices before, and he's...pretty much my favorite here. Yeah.

Yajirobe (Mike McFarland) - Same ol' same ol'.

Chi Chi (Cynthia Cranz) - Still very bad. She plays up Chi Chi's more negative aspects of her character way too much.

Ox King (Kyle Hebert) - Still derpy. ...how does a king sound like Patrick Star? I...I can't equate that in my head.

Mr. Satan (Chris Rager) - He was the best dub voice in the original dub....and he's the best dub voice in this dub. So, yeah, he's still pretty much perfect. Rock on, Rager.

Raditz (Justin Cook) - I can't remember how I felt about it to be honest.

Nappa (Phil Parsons) - About the same.

Nail (Sean Schemmel) - It's pretty much Schemmel's strongest voice here. He sounds really cool.

Kui (Bill Townsley) - Works.

Recoome (Chris Sabat) - Still sounds derpy. I don't like it.

Dr. Gero (Kent Williams) - Same ol'. Still works.

Android 16 (Jeremy Inman) - Well, he's putting emotion into him now, and he pretty much blew me away.

Android 17 (Chuck Huber) - I can't really said I ever had issue with his take, even in the original dub. He's pretty good here.

Cell (Dameon Clarke) - Improved, especially as Imperfect and Perfect Cell. His acting was pretty phenomenal towards the end. When Cell raged like crazy (in the uncut version anyway), it gave me the same chills I had with Wakamoto's Cell in this scene. His second form Cell is still throaty though. I don't like what he did in that yelling scene where he was looking for 18.

King Kai (Sean Schemmel) - Still obnoxious. I didn't like what he did in the Freeza arc when he was crying.

Vale as Future Trunks this time around didn't bug me as much as other but I do admit that his voice could've been more Sanji-like (when not swooning over his dear Nami).

You've given me a terrible, yet insanely hilarious idea: Trunks acting Sanji-like whenever he see's Past Gohan, temporary forgetting Future Gohan's already dead in a non-romantic type of gag.

Oh god, where the hell is that Shin-Budokai fanart of Trunks singing "Gohan-San, Daisuke" to a newly revived Gohan? It fits something like this perfectly!

I like all of the returning actors. I think they've gotten better at their roles. The only one I'm not completely keen on is Trunks. I feel like he sounds too unnatural. I do think that Vale's Trunks goes well with Sabat's Vegeta, though.

Piccolo: Good as usual except his voice sounds more natural now.

Krillin: Same as usual except he sounds more natural. Overall it's a more dignified performance.

Raditz: Same as usual (which is a good thing) except with a slightly better performance then the UUE dub thanks to the better scripts and direction.

Nappa: Same as Raditz.

Actually, the first time Sabat dubbed Yamcha was really good. He didn't have a goofy voice like he did in Z when they took off from Ginyu Assault.

Honesty, Devil's Castle, while the Texas cast's first dub, was better than what they did later on. Their script wasn't (too) goofy and didn't have stupid "filler dialogue" as I put it. Hah.

Yeah, so the improvement in Kai is deserves less applause than what people give it---especially for the returning actors; they were doing a better job in 1998 (or whenever the dub was produced) than in later cases. So they don't really get my blessing, especially after dubbing it for 15 years!

I'll give you that Sabat was okay as Yamcha in DB Movie 2 but I think you're wrong that the returning actors did better in 98. For one, how many of those actors returned and did voices for Kai? Bulma wasn't voiced by Volmer, Goku was younger so you can't compare Schemmel's acting, same goes for Kuririn. About the only actors you can compare are Sabat and McFarland.

I think Sabat has improved dramatically as an actor. While McFarland as Roshi has always been a bit of a charicature, he's definitely gotten better since Devil's Castle.

True, but I think, if FUNi continued in this direction, it would have been much different.

I do often think of how things would've gone had they taken that route even with their limited resources. I think having a good script alone would've done wonders for the quality of the acting, also, not just having the actors try and sound like a previous cast. Sigh, what might have been?

There's something noticeably different about Huber's Seventeen but I'm having a hard time putting my finger on it. I think original dub 17 sounded more relaxed and casual maybe? Huber was cool and cocky and McCoy was dry and snarky. I liked it. His 17 now has a lighter, maybe ever so slightly higher delivery. I don't dislike it or anything - I'm just saiyan.

Vale's Trunks isn't quite as bad as I had heard in the clip of Kai where he destroys Future 17 and 18. He still has more gravel in his voice than he originally did but it's not quite up to Bale Batman standards yet and so I'm okay with it.
Hey, there's a thought. Future Trunks is pretty much John Connor and guess who played John Connor.

I'm noticing now that Strait's Krillin is a lot less of a cartoon than it was in the Android Saga of Z. I guess he improved more than I realized over the course of the original dub.

They need to replace Eric Vale (the voice actor for Future Trunks in FUNimation's DBZ dub). The way he portrays him comes off as a pubescent boy/Tarzan.
Trunks is a teenager, so he IS pubecent.

Soppa Saiyjins from Dorgou Ballru Zetto is my favorite transformation everah, especially when Trounksoru did it in front of Seru and when Bejita did it when he faced Jingonigen-hachigo. But for real, I use the FUNi pronunciation. - Soppa Saia People

I dunno. He's 17. Almost of legal age in the US/above legal age in Japan.

I don't think he sounds like a teen. He sounds like a person in his 30's trying to sound like a person in his teens. As far as legal age, some people look and sound young for their age.

Reacoom: I'm possibly the only person on this forum who likes Chris Sabat's Reacoom and actually prefers it to David Kayne's portrayal. Anyway I think his Reacoom sounded better then ever, it still had that derpy voice with sinister delivery that I think works really well but it seemed more polished with each aspect of the portrayal put into better proportion.
