Is the Boo story arc coming too late?

Post by Super Sayian Prime » Sun Dec 30, 2012 11:25 pm

This has been something I've been pondering for a while. Assuming the Boo saga of Kai debuts this fall (as in the 2013 fall television season) it'll have been more than 2 years since Kai concluded its initial broadcast in Japan. It'll also have been more than a year, (or even two in some cases) where a variety of international markets will have concluded their broadcasts as well. A gap that long isn't good for retaining viewership, or mindshare. Heck, in the case of the US the gap in broadcast will have seen the show's primary broadcaster, Nicktoons, run through a series that contextually doesn't make sense without the Boo saga ... With that in mind, it almost seems as though the initial cancellation of Kai was short sighted, especially given this franchise's tenacity to do better internationally than in the domestic Japanese market.

Do you think the return of Kai will come in with a whimper, or a roar? The Boo saga was never the most popular part of "Z" and this gap won't help things.

I think Nicktoons' idea of constantly playing the show will keep it in the mindset of kids. I don't really think the young ones will care too much how everything fits. The worst thing they could do is halt episodes of Kai or GT. Out of sight and out of mind when it comes to that age group.

I think they'll play it up as much as possible. "You thought Dragon Ball Z Kai was over?! Nope, we have more episodes!".

I figure the wait will have damaged it a little bit, but I think it'll do all right once it finally airs again. With any luck, the kids who remembered liking Kai will see it and get drawn back into it at a slightly older age, and may stick in the fandom for good afterwards, rather than moving on to the next new thing.

It's Dragon Ball. Many uncomfortable boners will be had just mentioning more of it.

It's weird how they played GT though. I mean, now they saw the series out of order. The surprise in seeing grown up Gohan or Goten's existence or Gokuu's life coming back is kind of ruined....on the basis that none of them didn't already look this shit up during the initial run of Kai.

I agree with the comment about GT's airing being pretty untimely, but in the grand scheme of things they'll probably just air all of Kai again once they have the Boo arc available to them. Here in the UK we had that kind of thing happen anyway, we had Dragonball Z airing first, then Dragonball GT airing alongside Z, then Dragon Ball airing last, it never bothered me as a kid though, I just watched it all as a fan of the stories.

Were people actually watching GT on Nicktoons? :eh:

I watched it a few times, it made fun background noise while on the computer. I never went out of my way to watch it like I would Kai though, so...yeah.

Well, kids watching Dragon Ball Z Kai never saw Dragon Ball so... yeah.

What I mean is that watching Kai for the first time you'd wonder why they treat characters like Tenshinhan, Yamcha and whatnot like we've known them for so long. It's not bad but when their deaths are treated with a lot of gravity, why should first timers who never saw Dragon Ball care when they've barely gotten attached to those characters? Hell, as far as they know, Chaotzu died once.

So GT being shown before the Boo Saga is no biggie all things considered.

Television networks rarely dedicate prime time broadcast time to shows no one is watching.

Not for me. I held off on watching or purchasing the series until the announcement of the Boo saga, and I've just recently purchased and started watching Season 1 on Blu-Ray and I am absolutely loving it!

Considering Toei killed the brand themselves and the Buu cut is being made solely for international audiences and thus probably won't get the same level of treatment Kai originally got, Toei isn't trying to save the brand in the first place.

Now for those actually collecting the series, of course not; better completed late than never completed at all. Particularly the taking the scapulae to longest arc in the series.
