Time Capsule for DB fans (Post your old/rare items etc)

Post by eledoremassis02 » Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:22 pm

Feel free to contribute :)

Re-found my old Beckett Dragonball Z magazine (I had a few others but they are lost). And I thought it would be something fun for newer fans to check out
The joy of these kind of magazines were that it was still easier to get the info from a magazine (wither it be right or wrong) than checking out webrings. Plus I always enjoyed there section on the Japanese toys because I never really seen them before (until I saw some at the mall but they were too expensive :( ) But never the less, a good time capsule.
I am sorry about the photos and no scans. The book is in really bad shape.

The fanart sections were always great. I think I sent one once, but don't know if it ever made it into an issue. Any Kanzenshuu-ers in this set?

Lastly, what DBZ sites were popular on the internet (according to them)?

Internet wise, I was always on Temple O'Trunks and Planetnamek.com to read about all the stuff that was edited out, etc. (this was before I found out about Beckett.

Any fun things you remember or still have?

This brings back memories of an unnoficial DB magazine I used to own and love, it was something like "Pojo's Dragonball part 1". It got lost, somehow :/

Anything can be posted (I fixed the title to just be DB) :)

I find these things interesting and it's fun to see what old stuff people have.

Greg Werner, eh? You know, he just debuted with what's apparently going to be a regular One Piece column in V-Jump. Yes, that V-Jump.

Though this is not rare at all, this definitely is my treasure, which is my first DB tankobon volume. My brother and I read it to tatters, literally.

Why are you always so nitpicky about "DBZ"? People often refer to the entire Dragon Ball series as DBZ simply because it's easy to recognize. Deal with it, please.

My oldest and best piece of DB memorabilia is this poster with every single character on it.

I bought it for a few bucks in Chinatown.

I really like that cover. I am not too knowledgeable on Japanese related Dragon Ball goods..so this is the first time I have seen that lol.

To my knowlage, this is some of the first Dragonball related manga to come to the U.S. I could be wrong though.

Image

I guess these too arnt too rare, but they were originally done in U.S style volumes..so one Japanese volume would take a lot lol. I did read this one a lot though.

Whats interesting about this one is that they started incorporating Japanese "style" reading, reading right to left. Thus, they had to tell us where to start reading *this took a while to get used to*. Manga when being put out to volumes also had to guide us on how to read manga properly. I think they did this till about 2004?
Image

Pokemon (which also was done as U.S style volumes) were flipped to accompany more western style reading.

Some pricing.
Image

And a cool advertisement in the back. I remember thinking at one point that Dragonball was a U.S cartoon until I saw "Japanimation" and I was like "whats that?" lol
Image

I also still have this book (minus 1/2 the cover)
Image

It was cool because it talked about stuff that was way after what was currently airing on TV (I think mid Freeza saga). All the kids in school were talking about Trunks, androids and buu and this came in handy, although I haven't re-read it..I hear they got some facts wrong lol.

Sinestro, I always wanted that poster!! :o

*snip pic*
Going off of the picture, I'm guessing that's pretty much what we got here as 'Dragon Ball: Volume 16', right? That was my first volume too then, and mine is only in scarcely much better condition. It's been read so many times the pages are yellow, more reason for me to get the VizBigs. I plan to still keep this volume though, just because it was my first manga volume period.

I have that book too. Other than my beloved Pojo issue, this was my main resource for basic DBZ knowledge a long time ago. I'm almost afraid to re-read it eventually, just because of how much of it is going to be wrong...I wonder if that mom and son are still fans today though?

I may have some things, if I can ever get a camera.

I remember that "Super Saiyan speedway" ad from somewhere. Brings back memories.

He announced that a few weeks ago on the Unofficial One Piece Podcast. Tell me, Julian, how is his column?

I love getting Beckett magazines in the mail (Digimon, Pokemon and DBZ) as a kid. I'm glad that you post that magazine since I had fun reading them until I started to use the Internet to look up my own info. I do remember submitting my drawing of Goku vs. The Power Puff Girls (Don't ask) to them, but never heard back. Given that I was 10 at the time, I'm pretty sure they thought my drawing was awful  .

Yeah, sometimes I just stare at it for a few minutes. I've never actually cataloged all of the people on it, so I see something new every time I look.

The oldest DragonBall item I have is this behemoth of a binder!

Image

What's in it? Pages upon pages of DragonBall cards.

Image

I started collecting these back in 1994. There was a DragonBall card machine in one of my local video game stores. At first I bought them because they looked cool, little did I know I was about to embark on a never ending love for this series.

Image

Anyone remember Super Barcode Wars?! Some of the Character Collection line is mixed into this, they looked so much alike I didn't realize they were two separate series.

Image

Manga chapters in color...

Image

Some of my favorite cards are the cards with exclusive art. Meaning cards that aren't really screen shots or taken from the manga, but all new art made for a card...

Image

Image

I even have the cards that were released here in the US for DragonBall and DragonBall Z...

Image

I never really stopped collecting, but I don't really go out and look for cards. If I happen to get a card in a CD or in a magazine, I just throw it in my book. Here are some of the newer cards. Check out that awesome artwork!

Image

I have absolutely no idea what's rare and what's not. I always figured this card was rare, I mean look at it!

From almost 20 years of picking up cards along my fandom. THAT'S WHERE!

But to be more specific, I'd say 90% of those cards came from video game stores and comic book shops in the 90's. 5% of those cards were won in Street Fighter matches, and probably another 5% of those where bought as an adult.
