It's likely a stereo pair of the same track. I used the invert effect of Audacity between the tracks of Movie 2 and it resulted in silence (or near silence; it sounded like some static-like sound). It's normally used to subtract vocals from a song assuming that vocals exist in both channels. If the two channels are the same they you shouldn't hear anything. I assume kai might know better.Pretorious wrote:I pretty much trust you and Kei that only that only movie 13 is in stereo. Also, most Youtube commenters don't know doodley squat.
The other movies may have had their audio split into two channels, for whatever reason, but if they didn't do anything different with either channel, it is the same as mono, practically speaking.

Interesting.
Here's another thing: Dragon Box Z seems to have a different (and better) audio source for the end and opening songs than the main part of the episodes. Is the movie box like this? If so, the end songs, at least, may be in stereo. The full version of the end song for DBZ movie 2, Ikusa, has some obvious stereo effects at the beginning, but since I don't own that movie, I don't know if that part of the song was edited out. Could you give that a listen and let us know what it sounds like?

I'll post a snippet of that song, as well as a part of that movie (audio only, that is). You can give it a listen and analyze it however you like. I'll probably do that tonight.

You tell me if that's "stereo" or not, or just a stereo pair of mono channels.

The left and right channels are not perfectly identical, but I'd still call them monoaural. They seem to have tried to make it sound a little less flat is all.

I gave those clips a cursory listen, but didn't hear any obvious stereo effects. Linkdude may be right about them making it sound a bit less flat though.Fulicer wrote:You can give it a listen and analyze it however you like. I'll probably do that tonight.
Also: dang. They chop off the opening of Ikusa in movie 2. In the full song there is a marimba (I think?) at the beginning and it hard pans between left and right channels. It's super easy to hear the effect, especially with headphones:

Anyway, so much for that test. Here's another one. This is the end theme for movie 4:

At 2:05,the toms are hit twice, and are panned hard left. It is fairly noticable. That part of the song is in the actual movie. I know that from viewing this video (where the moment in question occurs at 1:13):

I don't know what the source of that video is, but it is mono, and I will assume it was not the Dragon Box. Would you be able to post a clip from that song from your Dragon Box, or at least give it a listen and tell us what you hear?

Seems to be more of the same type of mixing. Movie 4 end:

Yeah. Definitely mono. Must be advertised as stereo just for movie 13 then. That's misleading.Fulicer wrote:Seems to be more of the same type of mixing.
What is that little bit with Goku talking at the end of that last clip?

Yes they occasionally have Goku saying something at the end. Here's the accompanying screenshot for that part:Pretorious wrote:Yeah. Definitely mono. Must be advertised as stereo just for movie 13 then. That's misleading.Fulicer wrote:Seems to be more of the same type of mixing.

The stereo thing comes from the encoding, which confuses people.

Oh. The only movie I own is a Japanese VHS of movie 12, but it doesn't have that. Does the DBox have it?Fulicer wrote:Yes they occasionally have Goku saying something at the end.
Re: Dragon Box the movies = "stereo?" (except for Movie 13)
Movie 12 does not. Not all of the movies have this feature. At the end of Movie 6 Goku talks about "big news," and relates it to Trunks. That's based on the English words and the images that are shown -- not sure what he's saying since I don't speak Japanese. No subtitles for those parts because the domestic release of the Japanese movies lack that extra footage.Pretorious wrote:Oh. If it plays at the end of movie 06, then it's likely the teaser trailer for movie 07. That trailer was actually included (and subbed) on FUNimation's old single-disc release of that film. It seems to match up with what you described above. Here's what he's saying.Fulicer wrote:At the end of Movie 6 Goku talks about "big news," and relates it to Trunks. “Heya! I’m Goku! How was that? Pretty enjoyable?
I know it’s sudden, but I’ve got big news for you! During this summer vacation, we’re going to appear in another movie! This will be Trunks’ first appearance in a movie. And of course, we Z-Warriors and Vegeta will all take active roles! This summer vacation, “Dragon Ball Z: An Extreme Battle!! The Three Great Super Saiyans.”
Be sure to see it, okay?”

Man, I didn't know about these. I don't remember them being on any of my old fansub tapes. If you feel like buying something DB-related, these movies are release as singles on import sites like CD Japan. I remember them being called "Dragon Ball the movies" or something like that.Pretorious wrote: Man, I didn't know about these. I don't remember them being on any of my old fansub tapes. Ah, good to know. Thanks. First, though, I want to concentrate on completing my DB/Z/GT TV series collection. I am one of those people who has all the U.S. Dragon Box Z sets except for volume 2. It's been a thorn in my side for a while now.Fulicer wrote:If you feel like buying something DB-related, these movies are release as singles on import sites like CD Japan.
