The otherworld tournament

Post by shreddinghead » Sat Feb 09, 2013 9:35 pm

Anybody else whom also think the tournament saga starter was unusually silly? I mean, the tickling caterpillar and goku using kaio-ken after turning super saiyan was over the top for me. I have to shamefully admit some of the gags cracked me up, like the dispute between king kai and west kai, but still.

You think THAT tournament was "silly?" Been a while since you've read or watched the ol' 21st or 22nd, huh?

Actually some what, but still. By the point in the tournament saga many things should have been clarified, besides dragon ball was more lighthearted in general than its successor z so it figures.

I really liked this arc.

After the (mostly) serious Cell arc I found the "sillyness" was a nice contrast and was a bit of a nice throwback to the lightheartedness of the original series, the Paikuhan fight in particular reminded me of the Tenshinhan/Piccolo fights from the 22nd and 23rd tournaments respectively (if only in tone).

I liked Goku's fight with Pikkon, but the other fights were dick.

The only other thing I liked was the fact that it wasn't a life-or-death situation. There was no dire consequence for losing this tournament like there was for the 22nd, 23rd, and Cell Games.

Even the last fight was kind of dumb; the way Gokuu wastes ki in pointless blasts, is able to fight equally with Paikuuhan in fast-motion fighting yet get dominated everywhere else, his Kamehame-ha getting swatted like nothing makes no sense because Toei logic.

Well they were all dead anyways. Did think they were funny and enjoyed the funny voices some of the characters had. With its sillyness, it worked.

I liked this arc. The goku vs pikkon was my favorite fight. I think they should have shown more of goku in the afterlife.

I thought it was alright, but it dragged a bit. Goku v.s Paikuhan was cool, especially for showing what happens when Kaioken and Super Saiyan are used together.

The last fight between Goku and Paikuhan was awesome =/. How is Goku's kamehameha being swatted Toei logic? Pikkon is just that strong.

Because they seemingly fought evenly in close-up melee fights like nothing. It's really silly and illogical.

Pikkon fought with an advantage for a good deal of the fight...

Not in any melee battles?

I haven't watched this arc in forever, but I do recall having fun watching Goku and Kaio-sama's adventures early on. I couldn't tell you much about the tournament itself though; I'd need to give it a rewatch.
On hiatus.

I'm with you. Wasn't fond of this tournament whatsoever. Seeing a Master Roshi with pointy ears was cool though..

I liked this a lot. And along with Gohan bein trained by Piccolo, I think this is one of the best pieces of filler in the series.
