School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and Ending
With the threads about what chapter or eps aired before one was born, thought I'd ask ages, or at least what grade guys were in when the DBZ dub began in September of 1996 and when it ended in Spring 2003. For myself, at the beginning I was in my last year of middle school, 8th grade. When it ended I was in my second year of college.

We don't use grades in NZ, but I was Year 2 in 2003 when Funimation's dub of the Boo arc ended on Cartoon Network which is around 6 years old. Distinctly remember seeing Goku fight Boo on TV as well.

Re: School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and En
I was 10 and just starting 5th grade when it premiered and 17 and finishing 11th grade when it ended. Granted, neither of those mean anything to me, as I didn't know of the series when it first premiered and had long since stopped watching the dub when it ended. However, I was 12 and starting 7th grade when the reruns of seasons 1 and 2 premiered on Toonami, and that's when I first caught it.

I would have been 9 years old in 2003 when the Buu Saga would have ended on Cartoon Network.
I remember an after-school programme which still runs till this day named Sticky TV, back in it's earlier days it used to air DBZ and a slew of other Cartoons and Anime. I used to watch a lot of the Buu Saga when it was airing at that time.
The earliest memory I can surface is back when the original Funimation-Ocean dubbed aired on syndicated TV here in NZ. I was about 4 years old at the time and it was on the episode where Goku and Vegeta have their epic beam struggle.

I was only about 3 or 4 when the Ocean dub of DBZ first aired so I wasn't even in Kindergarden yet but I vaguely remember seeing it at the time, I definitely remember seeing the Raditz fight and the episode where Gohan befriends the brontosaurus but that's about it. Come to think of it, I may have seen a bit of the Ocean 1995 DB dub as well as I have "vaguelier" (I just made that word up, have no other way to describe it
) memories of seeing the episode with Monster Carrot/Boss Rabbit.
I didn't really follow the show intently until YTV started airing it on their afterschool Zone block around early 1999 (Around the same time you yanks were seeing it on Toonami), so I was finishing Kindergarten and heading to Grade 1 as well as being the first time I saw everything from the Saiyan fight to when it finished midway through the Ginyu battle. (Of course I kept watching when the Funi in-house aired and my fandom grew even more.)
YTV finished it up I think around the late spring or summer of 2003 (around the same time as the US finished it up) so I was between Grade 4 (one of my worst years at school
) and Grade 5 (one of my best years at school
).

I was a little boy of five years old (or so) when the Freeza arc was broadcast on Toonami. I mostly remember the Boo arc, though, and I was in third grade when that was on (so I was
.
It's funny, though. A friend of mine that I had in my third grade class thought I went Super Saiyan during PE the first day because I used to spike my hair up, and the lights reflected on it... Those were good times, always "playing DBZ" on the playground at recess.
Now you've got me all nostalgic.

I was 4 years old when the series premiered in 1996 (though I think it wasn't till 1998/99 in NZ) so I would have been in Kindergarten and when the series ended in 2003, I was 11 years old so I would have been in Year 7. My earliest memory would have been when I was 8 years old in 2000 around the time of Goku training in space and Vegeta fighting Zarbon.

I was 8 years old in 1996. Coincidentally I actually saw the first episode of Dragon Ball Z in 1996 and it was actually...the first episode of Dragon Ball Z. Now I'm not saying that I caught it on its original air date, it could have been a rerun, but I do remember Raditz landing in front of Goku. Then beause I was 8, I guess, I had a hard time distinghishing between Vegeta and Raditz. More particularly because I didn't pay much attntion to the series until I was about 10. That's when it REALLY started to boil.
In 2003 I was actually 15. High school. Still loved it.
I'll never forge in 2001, though, when they JUST started doing the "Other World Tournament Saga" on Toonami and they were only a couple of episodes in when on Tuesday, September 11, the infamous happened. It was so weird. It was a crazy time.
Man, memories.
But just to be clear, FUNimation's run of DBZ didn't REALLY end in 2003. Even if you don't count GT, in 2005 they went back to redub the Ocean stuff. Not sure if you purposely didn't count it, but I don't see why not. They started that going into my senior year of high school and it was my first year of college when the orange bricks came out. Damn, memories. To think that was 6 years ago O_O I went through all of college and now I'm in law school. Jeez.

Started kindergarten in fall 97, and I don't remember exactly when I first got into it, but I was hooked by the time they were re-running the fight against Nappa.
Z ended when I was in 5th grade.

I was 8, and had just started 3rd grade when it began (though it was a few years before I started watching it), and it ended just a couple months before my 15th birthday and the end of my freshman year.

16, in 2004. They also played GT that year as well barring the first 16 eps.

I was a freshman in high school when DBZ's English dub premiered in 1996, so I was somewhere between junior and senior year of college when things were wrapping up... not that I was paying attention

Re: School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and En
I was in sixth grade when DBZ first began airing in syndication, and a senior in high school at the end of the Buu arc. I lived in Japan for a couple years when I was younger and was one of the first to hear about Dragon Ball and DBZ, so when I saw DBZ on American TV, I was excited to see it. I remember telling everyone about it and it wasn't until around 99 that DBZ seemed to gain popularity among the kids in my school. Ah, the memories.

Wow I was 1 when it debuted and in the 3rd grade when it finished in 2003
Re: School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and En
I was about 5 in my infant year of school when the dub aired in 1998. At least I think that's when it aired on syndication in the UK. When the Ocean dub finished in January/February 2003 I was in year 5 which was my second to last year of Primary School.
If we're talking Funi dub then in the UK we got it in 2000 for the Ginyu-Trunks sagas and then again in October 2002 on CNX for the Fusion saga.

Re: School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and En
When DBZ premiered in 1996, I was a hyper 8th grader who was crazy about Sailor Moon (the 8th grade journal that we had to write in daily for a class is mostly full of Sailor Moon quotes, drawings, fanfic reviews, etc....the teacher never actually read them, just checked to see we had written something
) I wouldn't see an episode of DBZ until at least a year later (though I saw an episode of Dragonball early one morning in the summer of '96...while waiting for Sailor Moon to air, of course)
In spring 2003, I was finishing up my 2nd year of college, and aside from a short stint in Japan in 2004, that was the last year I took formal Japanese classes. Ten years...my god, I'm surprised I still remember as much as I do (and mourn the language skills that have faded over the years).

Re: School Age at the Time of the Funi Dub's Premiere and En
I was 11 and had just started 6th grade, the first year of middle school, in Fall 1996. I saw an episode or two on TV back then, but I just couldn't get into it at the time.
But in Spring 2003, I was 18 and long since done with school. I dropped out when I was 14 (just after starting high school), and I got my GED and graduated as soon as I turned 16. Yep. But I finally got into the series when I was 15, in between all that.

I was in third grade when the dub first aired, but I did not watch it until later. I was a freshman in high school when it ended.

Another thread that makes me feel old...
In Sept 1996, I was starting my sophomore year of high school.
In Spring of 2003, I was still in college and I stopped watching DBZ on CN in 2001 since I was able to buy all the dvds as they came out.

I was five years old when the series premiered in 1996 and 12 when DBZ finished in 2003. By 2003, I already saw the whole show in Japanese and the rest of the movies in Japanese. I didn't know what DBZ was in 1996 and didn't know what it was until 1998 when it was on Toonami. In 1996, I was more into Beast Wars and Power Rangers instead.
