I went to go look at OPZ's soundtrack cover to figure out why I liked it better; you know what, it's drawn by Oda.
Image
It's also not as spoilery as I recall it being. Maybe I'm just really hungry for plot-spoilers atm.

*Now wishes the BOG soundtrack cover had been drawn by Toriyama.*

EDIT: Ah, but if they wanted to keep their "connecting background" image, he would've had to draw three pictures, wouldn't he? OR, maybe they could've kept the ones they have here, but have an "alternate cover image" with Toriyama artwork for the soundtrack's cd that could come with the cd and swapped in to the little plastic cover-holder. That'd be nice.

The Dragon Ball Z: Battle of Gods soundtrack cover is just individual character art poorly tossed on a background, rather than an actual group shot. I wouldn't be surprised if these files weren't even originally drawn for the soundtrack and were just made for general promotional purposes.

I hate to sound like a contrarian hipster on the matter, but I think the cover art looks better than most of the stills from the actual film. It's far from my favorite style, but I don't see how it's any better or worse than other recent covers for Dragon Ball related products. Actually, the fact that it's simply generic might be the biggest problem, as Jacob pointed out. It just isn't very evocative of a feature film soundtrack. The OPZ soundtrack Chuquita posted on the other hand is fairly striking.

The promo art has the advantage of being just that, promo art an unrelated artist can whip up himself. The film itself has to to draw thousands of frames of animation by animators of differing skill levels, so any attention to detail is at best second priority. God willing the look of the film was designed to support fluidity, rather than well-drawn stills.

Truly sublime animation is designed to support both. Akira, Redline, most any animated Disney film etc.

I should also clarify that I meant that I like the art style of the cover more. Both share the problem of looking too shiny and essentially being an even more streamlined version of an already simplified style, but at least the cover art has sharp, varying line depths for the characters as opposed to looking like a super soft, single point Wacom pad Flash cartoon from Newgrounds.

Since the very first promotional artwork, the Z-Shenshi of the movie were shown to be Goku, Gohan, Goten, Trunks, Vegeta, Piccolo, and Kuririn. The website also has those 7 as the main good characters.
James Teal (Animerica 1996) wrote:When you think about it, there are a number of similarities between the Chinese-inspired Son Goku and that most American of superhero icons, Superman. Both are aliens sent to Earth shortly after birth to escape the destruction of their homeworlds; both possess super-strength, flight, super-speed, heightened senses and the ability to cast energy blasts. But the crucial difference between them lies not only in how they view the world, but in how the world views them.

Superman is, and always has been, a symbol for truth, justice, and upstanding moral fortitude–a role model and leader as much as a fighter. The more down-to-earth Goku has no illusions about being responsible for maintaining social order, or for setting some kind of moral example for the entire world. Goku is simply a martial artist who’s devoted his life toward perfecting his fighting skills and other abilities. Though never shy about risking his life to save either one person or the entire world, he just doesn’t believe that the balance of the world rests in any way on his shoulders, and he has no need to shape any part of it in his image. Goku is an idealist, and believes that there is some good in everyone, but he is unconcerned with the big picture of the world…unless it has to do with some kind of fight. Politics, society, law and order don’t have much bearing on his life, but he’s a man who knows right from wrong.

Good point, I forgot about that...and he is on one of the KFC bottles too. Huh. Maybe Kuririn will actually do something in the movie.

More news-ish type stuff, but nothing spectacular:

「ドラゴンボール」がコーラに、“7つ”のアミノ酸配合のゼロ系。
In case anyone missed it, Dragon Ball Z drink cans with cool illustrations of scenes from the series (not sure if this is where the news originated):

『ドラゴンボールZ 神と神』公開記念【ドラゴンボールZ まつり】
DBZ Movies 5, 6, 7, 13 and the two TV specials are being re-broadcast on TV, I think. :? Odd line-up there. :P

Willing to bet that there may be a few TV spots for the movie around the time of these showings

Went and checked the TV schedule, all the ones I saw are in March (which makes sense). I really hope we get a new trailer before March though.

Edit: I wish some of the tie-ins looked more like tie-ins instead of like general merch. :( Hard to motivate me enough to want to purchase stuff when a lot of it looks so much like the merchandise I saw while Kai was airing in Japan. Though if we do get a "designs book" and "animanga" ala OPZ, I know I'll be buying those. Also the soundtrack if I like it enough.

Edit x2: So I went to OPZ's site to see when the movie trailers came out. Those last two, 60 second ones were posted 2 days after the movie came out in theaters. T_T
Source: http://ameblo.jp/onepiece-film-z/archive-201212.html

In the process of trying to find when that middle one was posted, since that one is the equivalent to the next trailer we should get.
Edit x3: Could not locate an article about when the 3rd one was posted. Sorry.

The coverart is not poor, I mean, his style is very elaborated, but it has some errors, without that problem of Piccolo and Gohan, for me would be awesome.

CD Japan may not have it up yet, but Amazon's got a product page for the soundtrack: http://www.amazon.co.jp/DRAGON-BALL-Z-% ... 117&sr=1-1

No track listings (yet) though. >_>

C'mon track listing! At this point you're our only hope for another plot tease before the movie, if things keep up at this rate.

The problem I have with the cover art is that it looks like someone's just taken random renders and stuck them on a generic sky background. Even the way they're positioned seems off, most glaringly with Krillin just chillin' on his own in a battle stance... Why? xD. Also not to keen on having Vegeta and Gohan mirror each other, it's not the fact they're mirroring each other but it looks like they've been drawn with different scales just so they look the same size, just makes it look weird

Loving FLOW in DB style though, it'd be so funny if they made a cameo appearance in BOG  I joke but I kinda hope this happens now.

I have hope in Amazon for spoilering it. *_*

OPZ's soundtrack listing is practically an outline for the entire film, with some tracks just more revealing than others. It's imo the 2nd most spoilery spoiler for the movie next to Greg's awesome podcast-review.
Source: http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=SICP-3758

I feel like even for all its non-spoiler advertisements, BOG's soundtrack listing is still going to plot-tease just as hard as OPZ's does.

Yeah, this is reminding me a lot of when Kai came out. I may be reading into this too much, but this kinda gives me the impression that they're still hesitant to go all out with Dragon Ball Z which is, I dunno, disheartening.

Or they, in my most cynical personal theory, are using some of the leftover Kai art-stock that they had just hanging around unused since the show was cancelled. >_>
Leftover unused art is easier/cheaper than drawing brand new stuff.
Throwing the "GO" kanji on Goku's shirt is easy enough, after all.
I mean, they needed to draw Kuririn, Birusu, and Uisu from scratch, but everyone else....?

I dunno; I like to be more optimistic than that, but all the promo art I've seen so far, excluding the poster, just feels a little too unrelated to the movie for my comfort.

I mean, I guess at the end of the day as long as the movie itself is done well and has effort put into it, that's all that really matters...even so, I'd been looking forward to buying some tie-in stuffs (I share my birthday with one of the preview screenings so even more reason for me to splurge on something fun and BOG-related) but nothing so far has grabbed my attention outside of that cheerful WCF Vegeta-toy (and maybe the soundtrack). The other two items I want are only theoretical at this point (the animanga and the behind-the-scenes design book).

Can anyone else think of a particular reason as to why they'd put this movie out in 2013, as opposed to 2014 where it would coincide with the 30th Anniversary of the Manga?

The only possible reason I can think of, and it's a big stretch, is that it's been 17 Years since the last movie, and there are (were) 17 movies.

Most of coverarts from everything are like that, I don't know other way to do a coverart illustration

BOG is part of Weekly Jump's 45th Anniversary as far as I know; just as "Ossu! Son Goku and Friends Return." was for WJ's 40th Anniversary.
