The only possible reason I can think of, and it's a big stretch, is that it's been 17 Years since the last movie, and there are (were) 17 movies.
Production began September 2011, so I have to assume it was in response to Dragon Ball Kai failing and wanting to get back on the horse quickly, doing things right.

Goten looks a tad older.

I really hate the modern Dragon Ball style. I much prefer the '90s artwork. As such, I decided to make a sketch in the closest style I could to the old '90s artworks:

I think my drawing's actually technically better as well, with better proportions and more detail... :? I also redid Goten's pose, because the original one makes me think more of Gotenks.

Also, why is everyone's hair so freaking short in the modern styles? Is really short hair in style in Japan now or something? It makes their faces look bloated or something, and Gohan looks like he's balding. Although, I've noticed this in a some Kai artwork as well, but Goku usually has really tall and thin hair... It makes him look like a Christmas tree or something.

Yeah, I much prefer the 90's gritty look, this clean stuff is really offputting.

Wow! I'm saving that picture to my computer! :D I wish I could draw like that. Awesome job Metalwario64!
The Dragonboxes are like a middle aged woman who still looks good through simply taking good care of her skin and body with maybe a tiny bit of makeup while the Orange Bricks are like a middle aged woman who get's 50 tons of botox, makeup and plastic surgery in order to look younger and as a result looks even worse. ~ ringworm128

To me that's not even the biggest problem. I actually think the shading for the recent BOG stuff has some nice contrast, which give it a sorta old-school vibe, but the actual style is so bubbly that it feels way too cartoony or something.

You were going to do what I wanted to do. I love the 80's/90's artwork. It looks so much more alive.
My favourite art style (and animation) outside Toriyama who worked on Dragon Ball: Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru, Masaki Satō, Minoru Maeda, Takeo Ide, Hisashi Eguchi, Katsumi Aoshima, Tomekichi Takeuchi, Masahiro Shimanuki, Kazuya Hisada

Gohan suffers the most from that effect. EWW.

I can't unsee Piccolo's nose job on the official soundtrack cover now. >_<

The older art style definitely looks better/has better proportions. 90's DB art is way more stylish to boot.

Please hire Metalwario64. Immediately.

Just wanted to write how I miss the 90's artwork in case of Toriyama's recent style and you allready sprung up a huge discussion about it.
Yeah, this new art isn't good, it's too smooth and the colors are too bright. Some of the 90's stuff looks like taken from animation cell, as I love the colors used on the cels.
Yeah, stills from the movie also aren't looking good. Sure cel stills were superior, but even stills from the DC Animated later digital works look damn better than what is TOEI doing in this movie.
Those Hokuto No Ken OAV'S looked damn awesome, why they can't make a movie like that?

Thanks a lot Metalwario64, you're pretty good :)

Shonen Jump 45th anniversary.... Son Goku was 40th anniversary..... Oh god, it's 5 years allready!!! Also the SJ 2008 Special marks the beginning of my relationship with my GF and Battle Of Gods is like present for the 5th anniversary (Which only I will see, hahahaha! :D She hates the new stuff and always say, how Toriyama draws like shit nowadays as opposed to the old Dragon Ball manga)
FighterZ, Street Fighter 6, Mortal Kombat: Funky_Strudel
PS5: Dynamixx88
Trust me, I'm millenial and a designer.

Well that's good. Also I don't know if Trunks' hair is supposed to look a little more like Future Trunks' hair, or if it only looks different because it's badly drawn.

Nice work man. The official Gohan looks quite frankly awful :? I'm glad you fixed him  .

I didn't think the official cover looked that bad, but now that I've seen MetalWario's version... Jeeze! The original looks awful in comparison!
